Wow, Denver has a much more expansive rail network than I'd have thought! It's a more complete transit system than in many east coast cities. And built within ~40 years, no less. Congrats, Denver transit planners!
@legatus_newt
@legatus_newt 2 жыл бұрын
It's still very commuter focused. It's hard to take transit for anything other than downtown commuting and much of the city is underserved such as some of the densest and poorest neighborhoods just east of downtown with access to no rapid transit at all. The rail heavily serves the suburban commuters and the dedicated bus routes do as well. Taking a bus from Park Hill (3 miles) to downtown takes longer than the commuter rail from Greenwood Village (15 miles away) to downtown. There is a serious lack of bus lanes and bus infrastructure to fill in the gaps between traversing downtown / commuting downtown and hose who live on the urban edge ( dense neighborhoods outside of downtown ). It's way better than most cities of it's size in the US for sure.

Ya - too bad not many people use it. There is a stop by my condo that goes directly into the city - but it takes 40 mins when I can drive in 10. Not much incentive unless you are closer to the city or are without an automobile...🤷🏽‍♂️

Denver's transit system really has intensified quickly. Should be a model for other cities. I know its commuter rail network gets criticism for having low frequency but you have to give them props for having the gumption to build heavy commuter rail in the 2010's. The Union Station rework was so cool, I remember visiting Denver in 2017 after the A line was finished and being really impressed. Having grown up in SE PA seeing the Silverliners running on the Great Plains with the mountains as a backdrop was kind of a trip

YES!!!! THIS IS AMAZING!!!! Here are some things you missed. 1. The C line is temporarily closed. It has been closed since January 2020. This will be open once there are more drivers available. 2. In September 2020, Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the F Line is temporarily closed. This line will be reinstated in August. 3. Due to low ridership, the R Line was cut back to Lincoln Station. 4. At some point, The Lone Tree City Center Station was originally Lone Tree Town Center. 4a: The station at 29th & Welton still remains intact to this day, with the station in its original condition, and that the station having a sign saying that the station is now permanently closed, and another orange grid style construction sign saying station closed. 5. More expansions are planned for the network. Southwest Rail Extension: On the D and C Line, the line will be extended to C-470 & Lucent. The latest update on the project is this: 2013 - Present: RTD continues to work with stakeholders to secure funding and determine how to complete the extension. I am unsure what year this will be completed in. Central Rail Extension: The L Line will be extended from 30th & Downing to 38th & Blake to meet up with the A Line. RTD needs to secure additional funding to complete the extension. I am unsure what year this will be completed in. N Line: RTD continues to look for ways to fund the remaining 5.5 miles of track of the N Line from Eastlake/124th to North Thornton & Highway 7. I am unsure what year this will be completed. B Line: Between 2040-2050, the B Line will be extended to Downtown Longmont. Serving 5 intermediate stops. The news say that this will not be fully completed until about 2042. RTD has built out 99 miles of the promised 122 miles of track to Longmont and the project is now on deck. But the price tag of 2 billion dollars caused a huge delay. They will most likely open in stages.

The R line was cut back to Lincoln due to low ridership. It’s possible when development occurs in lone tree it will be re-extended back to ridge gate. Also the R line is one of the longest routes for train operators stoping at Lincoln could give more time for a break. To many trains trying to turn around at ridge gate leaves less break times. I operated on the Fline and is a very busy line for commuters going to work and college students at Auraria campus. All lines should open back when the pandemic is over. This is a great video though.

Fun fact: the MallRide used the specially built buses that are right-hand-drive and front-wheel-drive. When RTD had to replace the first generation buses, nobody would bid for the highly specialised buses. Thus, RTD established its own manufacturing company called TransTeq to build its own second-generation buses, making RTD the only public transportation service provider in the world to build its own buses. The second-generation buses were one of the first ULEV hybrid-electric buses, using the CNG engine to generate the electricity to four electric motors and the batteries. Now, MallRide buses are third-generation built by BYD. Why RTD struggled to expand its light rail and commuter train network in the late 1990s and early 2000s was due to Jon Caldara who served as chairman of the board of directors. He was responsible for the colossal failure of "Guide The Ride" campaign and putting many projects on hold because he didn't want the tax money to be spent on the "expensive" public transportation system. After he was ousted from the board, RTD repackaged "Guide the Ride" into "FasTrack" with promise of building many new lines and expanding the current lines. I was on the citizen advisory committee for a few years in the early 2000s. However, some of us were frustrated with RTD's inept thinking in regard to the routes between Denver and Boulder. RTD wanted to use the commuter train on the current freight lines in zig-zag pattern while at the same time rebuilding the median of Boulder Turnpike for the BRT. We pointed out it would be much better just to use the Turnpike as commuter train instead.

@KM-bx6to
@KM-bx6to 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure why they started with C and D, but many other names have significance which is why they seem so random. E,F, and H just followed the alphabet when they opened. But the W line, for example, is for West because it's the only line that goes that direction. G is for Gold, which was discovered originally discovered where the G line was eventually built, the R line is for the Rs in Ridgegate, Aurora, and Peoria, the A line is for Airport, and B is for Boulder where it will eventually go. And not sure why he calls it a transit mall, but the bus travels down a large outdoor shopping mall that is serviced exclusively by that bus
@legatus_newt
@legatus_newt 2 жыл бұрын
The station name changes were all based on corporate sponsors of the stadiums they served. So they were paid for with private dollars. As far as the alphabet goes, this whole system was planned and voted on in the early 2000's so the letters don't necessarily represent the order in which they were built since that was decided after the fact. For example the A line was initially supposed to be the first constructed but it relied on Federal money that was put on hold due to the 2008 financial crash. Most of the light rail was funded by the State money and the commuter lines relied heavily on subsidies ( since the feds seem to only subsidize commuter rail and not local rail, the Federal government is still very obsessed with suburbs).

In both the stadium and arena cases in Denver there were funding contributions made by the developers toward construction costs that require RTD to keep up with their vanity namings. Internal wits have proposed the use of electronic signage for the frequent name changes. Orginally the single line was numbered 101, a homage to the first LRT line in Edmonton, Alberta. It used Federal Green as its Pantone color. When other lines were in the works a consultant who had previously worked in other cities was hired to tell RTD that colors should only be used as background to letters, due to the color blindness issue and difficulties in reproducing them in print -- especially clunky in black & white! The consultant also labeled all of the lines then planned. Lines A, B, C, D, E, F, H follow the consultant's recommendation. Lines G, N, R, W are municipal vanity replacements for the consultant's recommendation. Line L was a designation needed when it was split off of Line D for technical and community reasons, although some refer to it as standing for "weLton street". The letters I, M and Q were not to be used due to common mistakes in reading digital signs. There are enough unused letters to cover the planned additional construction, as all are extensions.

Ball Arena (FKA Pepsi Center) has several professional teams playing there so it’d be difficult to name it after a single team. For Mile High Stadium, many of us would like it to just be that but politics plays a big role in the agency. Naming stops after neighborhoods instead of street names would be a big game changer as most things are based on cars even for rail.

Denver RTD was designed by planners to only serve suburban 9-5 commuters as they thought that only they mattered in terms of transit. Because of their terrible planning, RTD is currently in a major crisis, with skyrocketing fares, low ridership and severe criticism from the public for not being a good enough system.

I wish lines like these would come to Chicago. There are many abandoned freight rail lines right-of-ways by Union Pacific they could be constructed on. Also along Chicago's Lake Front there's plenty of room to build these that could serve McCormick Place, Shedd Aquarium, The Museum of Science and Industry, and other attractions alongside the Lakefront.

There were a lot of station name changes when a new sponsor bought naming rights to the stadium which makes me wonder - does the cost of replacing the station signage and new system maps each time fall on the transit authority (which seems unfair), or does the company buying the naming rights pay for it?

I just used the trains in Denver and they are not walkable at all. Only access to one side of the tracks not both. I had to walk all the way around and then over the bridge to get to the side I wanted to go and it was way too much access walking. Why do they not have pedestrian foot bridges to get to the other side? Everything is so spread out. The stations are not even close to anything but bus stations and large parking lots.
@ttopero
@ttopero Жыл бұрын
You identified a key failure of what looks impressive on paper: these are for commuters, & major event attendees who drive to the station to park in very expensive structured parking for free. They were never about what people think of today as TOD. Even the newest stations on the SE are single sided & waste a lot of opportunity for full land use benefits. A major shortcoming for sure!
@WW-hr1hd
@WW-hr1hd Жыл бұрын
The Olde Town Arvada Station on the G Line is one of the most ideal station locations, especially now that several streets in Olde Town Arvada, have been closed to cars and only allow pedestrians. There are many businesses, restaurants, and bars within easy walking distance from the station. But a major failure in planning for the Olde Town Arvada Station is the access to the station from the parking garage on the south side of the rail line. There is a steep hill just south of the rail line so that the top floor of the four-story garage is level with the station. (This was done partially to preserve the "grand view" of Grandview Avenue which parallels the rail line. On a clear day you can see Pikes Peak about 80 miles to the south.) The failure is that there is no way to access the station on the north side of the tracks from the garage on the south side of the tracks without exiting the garage onto side streets on either the east or west sides of the garage, crossing the tracks on the sidewalk at the street level crossing, then walking east or west about half a block down the sidewalk just north of the station. It's a very "long way around" to get from the garage to the rail station. This is especially problematic since the first floor of the garage serves as a bus transfer hub (which in and of itself was very good planning). A major reason for the lack of access between the garage and the station is the fact that the commuter rail shares right of way with a freight rail line, which runs on the south side of the commuter rail line. The most logical solution would have been to build a tunnel under the tracks with an elevator on the north side to access the station. The issue was raised while the garage was being built, but it was already too late. There were also excuses given that the weight of the freight trains made a tunnel prohibitively expensive. There was a brief discussion about building a bridge over the tracks, but that idea was shot down quickly since the bridge would block the "grand view" of Grandview Avenue (see note above). In the end nothing was done so the only access from the garage to the station is the "long way around" described above. The ironic thing is that there IS a tunnel under the tracks at the next station to the west, the Arvada Ridge Station. There is a surface parking lot on the south side of the tracks, which is about 20 feet lower than the station level. A tunnel connects this parking lot with the station on the north side of the tracks. They did it with the Arvada Ridge Station so I don't understand why they couldn't do the same thing at the Olde Town Arvada Station.

Too bad they use slooow ass light rails and don't have any stations near where people live. I would love to take transit to work everyday cuz cars are expensive to maintain and driving is dangerous but Denver's transit needs more investment before it can become a primary mode of Transportation. RTD is almost 4x longer than a car ride which is embarrassingly bad considering in other cities public transit times are only a few minutes longer. I wish the state legislature would invest more into transit but they seem to not care
@ttopero
@ttopero Жыл бұрын
The trade off is that the additional time on the train is available for things not requiring attention as driving does. You wouldn’t want the train to move faster than it does as the conditions are already uncomfortable at top speed. Our station & alignment is for downtown commuters & event goers who drive to the park and rides so access to the station from nearby neighborhoods isn’t considered. It’s got major shortcomings but for those it’s built for, it’s high on American standards (meaning bottom for peer cities in Asia & Europe).

Voters turned down a light rail plan that included a subway segment of the Edmonton downtown type. Past official RTD plans included a subway under California Street. Without consulting RTD the City's 1986 Downtown Plan included a subway under 15th Street. When civic leaders visited Portland and San Jose they decided that it was better to put money into extensions than into underground construction. Learning from those systems the decision was also made to run contra-flow in downtown streets.
@ttopero
@ttopero Жыл бұрын
One reason is that the initial route was built with all local funds. Denver saw itself as a cowtown that didn’t need east coast expensive stuff. It would be a major disruption downtown for years & have to go down into the convention center tunnel that curves & is undergoing another expansion. It’s not as terrible as it may seem but it would be nice.

It’s less confusing than it might seem. It was more so with the C & F lines having different destinations from same origination point as D & E lines, respectively until the former were eliminated due to pandemic ridership & internal views of transit purpose. You can get used to it quite easily. The biggest issue is how to get anywhere from the stations except downtown & Union Station stops because it’s all for commuters that drive to structured parking at the stations.
