For the last 2 decades whenever there was a vacancy, I used to get 150 applications in 48 hours! Except for those couple of years of Great Recession. Pre pandemic I used to get 3200 for my rental condo near the Apple campus (well there is also NVIDIA, Intel, EBay, Agilent, Cisco, Broadcom and few dozen smaller tech companies). Post pandemic many people left the Bay Area and went to Austin, Atlanta, Denver and many other cities across the nation because of remote work. I recently rented my condo for $2600 to an Intel employee who had moved back from Austin to Bay Area because his rent was pretty much the same! I am actually liking the Bay Area again… I hope the trend continues and more people move out. My sons might just have an opportunity to live in the place they were born and raised!!🤞

The US government is the one robbing Americans their future by continuously printing money. They claim it's helping the poor and middle class but it's doing the exact opposite. 40% of Americans have no investable assets and are living paycheck to paycheck. When the stimulus is given the poor and middle class use it to pay for rent, food, etc. However, the stimulus that was printed has caused asset prices to increase (rich get richer) and for the poor to get poorer. It's a vicious cycle. The US needs to stop printing money and allow for the markets to correct themselves. This will cause a lot of pain short term but would be better in the long run.

Giving you just enough help to get by, but not enough to invest in your future or to move somewhere with better education and job opportunities. Take the areas surrounding las vegas for instance. Housing in Henderson is far cheaper, so is education. And you can make way more money in the service and related industries there than you can in Denver. Same is true with Naples Florida. There are a lot of places with cheaper housing than Denver and with better money making opportunities if you're willing to hustle. I don't know anything about your family, but if their support is conditional on you living nearby; that isn't very supportive. It's selfish. A lot of parents don't realize they will one day need care. And if they don't help set their children up for success and a solid future... Then when they are aging and need care their children won't be able to provide much as they will still be struggling just to make ends meet.

Been in this 2-bed duplex for 10 years, and know i need a "plan B" but also don't know how I would move. I'm in a very sought after area in Indy, in a house where I have a fence for my dog, a nice screened porch, a huge dry clean basement, and a garage. House has Pella windows, is all brick, they-pay the water bill, my utilities are low. I pay $750/month. Other 1-bed duplexes in my neighborhood-and all over Indy-rent for at least $1100/month, even in bad/worse areas. I feel lucky for now, but this nationwide housing crisis scares me!

When are they going to blame the government for their problems? Folks never seem to understand, they have no right to force someone else to rent to them. Laws and taxes are the problem.

@@geocam2 Don't get me wrong, I love making money more than anyone I know. But sometime doing the right thing and being ethical are more important than just making money. A lot of people are struggling to put a roof over their head and living paycheck to paycheck. I want to be a solution to a problem not a source of the problem.

Good on you! I have a landlord who inherited the duplex I live in from her mother. Long paid-off. Been here 10 years, and watched the longtime tenant next door buy a house two years ago. Was worried they would sell then. The new tenant is great, but he is actively looking to buy as well. I won't ever be able to, but that's not on my landlord. As I become so aware of the housing crisis in this country, I know I need to plan for when this house is no longer an option-and I have had several rentals sold out from under me in the past-one was in Colorado. It's on me to improve my finances, and at 62, it's bleak, but doable. I'm in a highly-desired area in Indy, in a well-insulated, 80 year-old brick duplex (2-bed side), with a screened porch, a clean, dry, huge basement, a garage, a fence they let us build for the dogs, the water bill paid by them (they never separated the meter), and they installed A/C (first time) and new furnaces after we moved in! I have paid $750/month for ten years. They raised the rent for the one-bed side from $650 to $700 when the new tenant moved in 1 1/2 years ago. i have a 5-year roommate, and I still struggle,, which is my issue to fix. I love every day both grateful, and worried. I applaud your kindness toward your tenant, but I live knowing that when it's in my landlord's best interest to sell this property, I can't be upset with them. It would likely sell for close to $300K now, so at some point (and they, sisters)r, are in their late 60's and late 70's. I am grateful for them, and people like you, even though life, and housing, are temporary, eventually

@Truth Teller it's her employer's fault. Are you going to ask that same question to everybody who mentions their pay not changing?. There aren't enough high paying jobs to go around. Not even for 30% of the population let alone a majority.

The rent control causes more homeless because it disincentivizes new construction. The institutional money was right. The answer isn't rent control. It's building more housing.

Hey I’m in Portland Maine and from Denver. What a charming city with great access to some beautiful outdoors (including surf)! I’d consider Maine as a place to live. The cost of apartments for sale though is egregious.
