It does seem like trying to make a distinction without a difference. Even if, technically, one wants to insist that tide is vertical movement, water doesn't just move vertically. The only way a tide can happen is if water flows. Flowing water is a current. The tide and the current are the same thing.

Tide, used the way Capt Tim uses it, is shorthand for tide induced current. Which is different than river current in that it changes direction, or doesn't flow at all.

So, current vs. tide: I'm a life-long sailboat racer and we typically discuss the tide. We don't care whether we're eight feet higher or lower at the end of the race, but that knot or so of tidal current is a critical factor. Even so, we most often call it tide.

Industries very frequently use words differently from contemporary language and even other industries. Mariners do that with "tìde". Just for fun you might ask such a person if they have ever heard of the tide coming in or going out.

Yes “tide is a foreign language to a lot of inland Towboaters. A common term used on inland waters that’s probably rarely used in the waters you travel is South bound and North bound. Thoses terms do not describe the cardinal direction. Rather they determine whether a vessel is going downstream or upstream.

Hey Tim, great to hear your explanations and see your style of seamanship. Having sailed a lot in and around the UK and Northen Europe we learn to plan our trips to the tide tables. The River Thames is tidal up to the tide gates just west of Isleworth Ait and when closed boats use a lock to pass. So as not to fight the tide, we plan outbound inbound runs to coincide with the tide barrier being lowered. Going down river with the aid of the outgoing tide and the upper river flow saves a lot of diesels and if seeking to call into a marina at Tower Bridge, Limehouse or Galleons Point in the old days the lock in times are controlled by the height of tide. Mooring on the upper Thames needs extra care with the flood waters bringing debris down. I floated a railway sleeper out to deflects logs etc. from between the mooring and the boat. One night I felt a clonking and found a gas bottle one side of the stem and a BBQ the other, the bottle came in handy as a spare. The Humber again is tidal, and sandbanks continually change, hence the floating lightships. The chart office at Grimsby loaned me a chart as I had classic boat that was built in 1930 close by and went to WWII in 1940. They loaned on the understanding it came back unmarked, of course we took great care of it not only for the cost but their kind gesture.

Tim, as a “land lubber” , I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos. I definitely appreciate that you can explain things in terms most of us understand. I do have a ski boat, so I’m not quite land locked 😂🤣. When everyone got to discussing “prop walk” after the Baltimore fiasco, totally understood what you meant, my boat is a 90 Malibu with the direct drive 351 in it and I learned quite quickly about that, because when you throw it in reverse, the ass end kicks to the right. It definitely makes you have to think things through especially with low speed maneuvering. Very cool stuff to learn the reason why certain things happen. Physics😂🤣. Much love to you buddy and be careful out there 🤙🤙.

I’m no mariner, and I’ve been watching this channel only since early in the pandemic but I know exactly what you mean by tide vs. current. Tide changes the current flow and/or direction a couple of times a day. Current is of course affected by the time of year (rainfall, snowmelt etc) but it doesn’t affect the job nearly as much as the day to day stuff. I think what those folks are missing is that when you say “tide” you mean “tidal changes to current”, and anyone in an industry working as crucial infrastructural support (shipping, aviation, and even medicine) must abbreviate and shorten terminology: “tide” is much easier to say. This is a fun channel!

Like Port/Starboard vs Left/Right. Those within the industry use whatever is acceptable for the locality and generally accepted practice. Sure pedants can crack out the dictionary and pound their chests over perceived miss usage. (I’ve been guilty of that! 😱). In the end, so long as everyone is singing from the same book, it doesn’t matter what terms are in vogue. Keep up the good work Tim and keep educating your devoted fans. 👍❤️

I drive a semi and some of the shippers and receivers I visit have limited parking for us so they have very strict limitations on how early you can arrive. It's hard to be prepared for traffic slowdowns and not arriving too early. The closer you get, the less you can affect your ETA by slowing down without actually stopping somewhere. And you can't just park a semi anywhere! Like you just did here, we have to plan our arrival to be early, but not too early. Lot's of second guessing along the way as being late is NOT an option.

@@TimBatSea In areas all around those particular sites are these no parking signs along both sides of the road... $500 fine and 3 points on your CDL. So our only real option is we're too early is to take the scenic route provided we can find a route that is legal for a semi. Neither is like a sailboat however. Year's ago I learned the trick of what I called setting the parking brake on a sailboat. I believe the proper term is being "hove to". Slowly turn into the wind as if you were tacking, but don't release the jib sheet. It's really surprising how little the boat will travel in that state.

What happened to the barge you were taking to Baltimore when Dali hit the bridge? Did you turn around & repurpose the load for different ship(s)? It seems like the clearing of the FSK bridge wreckage involves a lot of tugs, barges, cranes & various watercraft. Is there a increased need to move marine/diesel fuels to Baltimore?
@TimBatSea

Thankyou for watching. Two things happened. We were taking a load to a terminal (over 2 million gallons) in Baltimore when the bridge came down. So we got re-routed to NYC. Do mariners in port or harbor use what we call uni com at uncontrolled airports. An open communication channel to everyone that's supposed to be on frequency, that we broadcast to everyone where were at, and what we intend to do or go?
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching James. So I think, if I understand your question, that there are two answers. Most companies all have a "house channel". But all commercial vessels here have to monitor 16 (a high power, calling and distress frequency) and 13 (a low power bridge to bridge frequency). Although we would never admit it, some commercial guys have been known to turn down the volume on 16 in the summer because of all the recreational boaters playing on the radio and making "Radio Check calls" (note: radio checks are not to be done on 16. If you don't know what channel to do one on, you probably shouldn't be using a VHF). Ok. That's my weekly rant. You are welcome. 😂 CUOTO

Thank you for watching. Yes. They are great, but expensive. Companies are interested in getting the job done as cheaply as possible to stay competitive. And they offer very little benefit when towing. But for ship handling, they are amazing. CUOTO

Can one become a tugboat captain later in life like 56 years old - asking for a friend
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching Ronald. You might want to watch my early video, "How to work on a Tugboat". But the answer is yes, it can be done. But it's almost impossible. Just as you could go to college and get a 4 year degree in biology (pre-med) and then another 4 or 5 years in med school followed by a few years of internship. Sure. It could be done, but for most, that ship has passed. I will leave you a link that puts it into perspective below. CUOTO facebook.com/share/p/8aZMLPXLkvqsBceb/?mibextid=xfxF2i

Tim thank you you might have said this before but could I ask how long are your shifts on the tug ? I assume you have watches how long are do you stay on the tug? Also you say right and left not that I mind why nor port and Starboard do you say R & H for the none seafarers? thanks again
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 3 ай бұрын
Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel Peter. There's a lot to unpack here. We work 3 weeks on the tug and 3 weeks off. While on the tug, we all work two 6 hour watches. And as far as left/right - port/starboard goes, you are correct. We in the US Merchant Marine and Navy and Coast Guard give rudder commands in right and left. But I also use right and left along with a few other words to try to communicate better with those watching at home. CUOTO

So the tug bow is tied into ( the notch? ) with a cable when the barge rises how do the hands get it undone ? is one end on a winch ?
@TimBatSea

Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. I have a few videos that show the process, but accentually the line in the bow is just used to hold us in the notch while getting the push gear up. CUOTO

1/10ths of an hour is easier & I use it in the car to guesimate my travel time but why haven't you guys just gone metric? I don't watch any other maritime videos except you but I'd imagine other crews in Europe use the metric system? They do on everything else & only we try to use both..... that's not confusing, huh? thank you for the videos Capt.
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. Yes. That's why we use a 6 minute line (its a 1/10 of an hour). We don't use metric or imperial units. We use the maritime equivalent, knots or nautical miles. CUOTO

It's a current, caused by a tide, therefore it's perfectly legitimate to call it a tide to distinguish it from regular currents. Any fresh water mariners who care enough to "correct" you on that front should get their noses out of the books and look out the wheelhouse :)
