Since 9-1-1 people can no longer go through DSA security without a ticket. Unfortunately those days are gone so the good byes will have to be said at the main terminal.

I am arriving Dulles on ANA flight. Connecting to commuteair DBA United Express. May I ask if the walking distance for connecting to domestic flight, how far and will it be tough to transfer my heavy luggage check in after custom and immigration

It really depends on which gate will be your domestic departure. Just allow at least 2 or 3 hours connection time. Immigration queue may take longer. You may also check with ANA if they can check in your luggage all the way to your final destination (to be collected at your last arrival airport) that would be very convenient for you. There are also Global Entry kiosks and dedicated Mobile passport lane for International Arrivals making a connection at Dulles. Passengers may walk from the main terminal Concourse A via an underground tunnel with moving walkways. You can then walk from Concourse A to B within the long terminal itself. Concourse A and B are interlinked, and so are Concourse C and D, so passengers may walk between Concourse to use the facilities. If you have longer connection time then I do not see any reason for you to rush. Good luck in your connection and I would be willing to answer more of your questions if you have. Keep safe always.

Do you need a plane ticket to get through the security checkpoints? I want to do a walking tour of the terminals and their subway shuttle. WMATA is expanding the metro from DC to the airport.

You can only tour around the airport where the check-in counters are located and before you enter the security at 1:53, there will an airport personnel who will check the boarding pass so technically you definitely need a ticket/boarding pass to enter.
