I'm a couple of years younger than DM, I still live in Basildon. You'd see them around regularly, nice and quiet lads. I even sold Dave a shirt in 1983 (?) in the menswear shop I worked in and he wore it on Top of the Pops that week. If anyone wants any information on Basildon get in touch.

❤ Igor, you did it all! What I used to imagine since some 10 years ago you' ve already done: the "Basildon Pilgrimate". As a fan of the band since 1982, when I was 17 and a freshmen at Law Faculty, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Cheers from Lima, Peru. ❤

You should have gone into Basildon town centre, checked out where they would be weekends buying records at Godfrey's or Pop In record stall on Basildon market, not forgetting Raquel's nightclub (Infamous for the Essex boys case) Depeche Mode played their in 1980 (It is closed now of course but the building and entrance doors where fans queued around the corner to get in is still there). plus the Tesco in Pitsea is still there, I believe Dave Gahan worked there. A short drive further you have 'Crocs' nightclub in Rayleigh (Now called the Pink Toothbrush) where Depeche Mode played a number of times, then Southend, places like the Kursall. I know the bowling ally in Basildon was still open maybe 15 years ago, which was another place they would frequently visit in their youth (It may be closed now, it had not changed much 15 years ago from the time DM would go) For whatever reason I may visit Basildon once a year for the past 40 years, I can say I always think of DM walking the streets and growing up there every time I pass by or visit Basildon..... It's a real S**T hole of a place, but to think DM lived and were formed there, makes it very special. Well worth a second visit and show the places they played, record shops they bought vinyl from.

@@suspiciouswatermelon7639 After WW2, a new proposal of 'New Towns' on the outreaches of London was reached. The idea was to encourage London families to move out of London and into these new purpose built estates. They were often soulless and sterile but also home to some wonderful 'brutalist' architecture. The first towns were Stevenage, Hatfield, Harlow, Hemel Hempstead to the north of London, Bracknell to the West, Crawley to the South and finally Basildon to the East. For completion, Milton Keynes was also part of the proposal, but this town was much further out.

Nice video... 👍 If anyone else is thinking about doing this, please spare a thought for the current residents/homeowners in these locations, especially walking into schools taking photos or filming... Not particularly advisable unless you have permission... As some have already said, (including members of the band), back then when they were still living in this area, it was a very working class town, it was not the best at times, but hey, look at what we all gained from it...A blessing of major talent. I'm sure, (at least I would like to think), that everyone will be responsible and respectful... Thanks

The 101 film and album were so named because the Pasadena Rose Bowl concert was concert number 101 of the Music for the Masses tour. Alan Wilder suggested this name.

Nice video. But the schools and places you show now are nothing like they used to be , I lived in Basildon for 40 years. They were just ordinary kids - Raquels was a dump. Fights every night. I remember watching them there in 1980. Basildon was built because new large factories opened and London over spill. People may also remember Alison moyet was from there as well. The boys used to sit in the fountain as well.

Dave has been back once, I believe. 13 years ago. He took his family to see his old house, pulled up outside and drove off. He didn't get out of the car. They all said they'd never return...It is a real S**T hole. But I know Dave had a very quick visit to his old home to show his family. I see Vince Clarke in Southend pubs, a number of times around 1994 ( I recall it was 1994 as Erasure were number 1 in charts with I say, I say, I say and pointed it out to him in the window of Woolworths. It's a real dump of a place and I doubt they have any great memories.

Can someone describe that attendance register? Why each day consists of two halves and what those alternatively angled lines mean ("o" means absent I assume)? And horizontal lines mean different lessons/disciplines so there were 7 lessons each day?
@ohoganroad5 ай бұрын
The two halves mean Morning and afternoon (after lunch) when the register, as it was called back then, was taken. The lines meant you were present when the register was called and 'o' meant absent. 'L' meant late. Hope that helps.
@diamondp.96885 ай бұрын
Hmm, so each lesson consisted of two parts which took place in the morning and afternoon appropriately? It seems kind of strange to me..
@ohoganroad5 ай бұрын
No , it's as you said originally, the horizontal lines signified periods during the day where different subjects were taught ie:Maths 9am -10, English 10am - 11 etc

Back then I’d get my morning mark And leave to go into town with my mates (who’d do the same thing).Ditto the afternoon, The teacher marking you present wasn’t usually your teacher just your form teacher. Mine was an art teacher so only had her class once a week😂. I finally got caught when we had the TB and polio jab and we were watching Zombie dawn of the dead at a mates so missed our call up. My Dad was science a teacher a Fryenrs and had Dave in his class. (School is now a housing estate ). I was a couple of years younger and hung out with his brother Peter.
