This is a documentary on one of my favorite railways. As of recent it has become really difficult to find this documentary as the original uploader, Al Jazeera, has strangely taken it down so I have brought it upon myself to reupload this for everyone to see.
Documentary Description:
Eritrea, a small country in the Horn of Africa. The former Italian colony has been through a thirty-year war of liberation that has left its marks - on the people and their landscape. In 1993 Eritrea finally gained independence from Ethiopia. A celebrated new beginning, even if the reconstruction of the country has come to a standstill. However, the most important achievement of the colonial period was immediately put back into operation: the steam railway, which already a hundred years ago connected the capital Asmara in the highlands with the port city Massawa on the Red Sea. The notion of national unity is the long-awaited pride of a free Eritrea. Meanwhile it is quiet in the railway depot of Asmara. The wind sweeps through the cracks of the ailing outer walls and makes cobwebs float back and forth in the same spot. From time to time a railway worker walks over the rails. In this lethargic, semi-darkness we explore the microcosms of the railway company. We get to know Hinza, the young train driver, and Fezahatsion, the old chief mechanic who experienced the glorious times of the railway. Little by little, the poetic images intensify and draw a picture of today's Eritrea: a picture of standstill, a picture of passion for the ancient steam railway, a picture of rebellion against its decay, but above all a picture of deep friendship.

Che bella ferrovia! Dovrebbe essere dichiarato patrimonio mondiale. Saluta il popolo dell'Eritrea che ha restaurato questa ferrovia.

In the 1960’s rode the Asmara-Massawa railroad many times while stationed at Kagnew Station a US Army/Navy Communications base in Asmara. The train was an old Italian design from the 1930’s steam driven. Some of the most incredible sights from the open windows! The switch backs going from Asmara at 7,500 ft to sea level at Massawa in about 65 miles. Wooden seats and a bumpy ride, the smell of coal/wood steam and fresh air and the local population made the trip always an adventure. The alternate way was to use the “Littorina” basically a diesel powered trolly car it to being made in the 1930’s that used the same tracks. How the railroad workers kept the train running is incredible, local made parts and ingenuity kept the train and Littorina running. Absolutely incredible. Next door in Ethiopia the Addis Ababa to Djibouti railroad is another experience now obsolete as the Chinese have built a modern rail line. I understand some parts of the old Ethiopian French line functions infrequently basically for freight!

My grand grand uncle lived in Asmara lot of years and was killed by UK army in Cheren 1941. His body is still there under the sky of the place he used to call "home"! Italy loves Eritrea!

It brings me tears of joy to see a railroad still using steam. The day steam died was the end of the golden era of the railroads

2023-1940= 83 83 + 15 = 98 years of age! Interesting! He doesn’t look a day older than 60! I think not allowing school (replacing it with SAWA, a military academy) is hurting the citizens!

Thoroughly fascinating, a beautiful tribute to the men who loved their steam engine and kept diligence to keep her operational. I'm not sure when this was filmed (early 1990's?) but the train now is fully and happily operational as of 2003, transporting people 73 miles from Depot Asmara to Massawa. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rcmnqs2btpylink.html
