You catch SOO many things in movies. You are becoming my favorite reactor because you say and notice things that really add to my enjoyment 1.)you noticed Sparrow recognized the last name 2.)you noticed the character arcs 3)you RECOGNIZED Aztec symbolism on the gold 4.)you recognized that Jack does everything to serve himself 5.)you pretty mailed EVERY character's inner motives from the beginning. If you don't already know, the movies are based on Walt Disney's ride of the same name. The role of Captain Jack Sparrow was originally written for Hugh Jackman; however he was not well known outside of Australia at the time so Disney cast Johnny Depp instead, who was fairly well known. Johnny Depp based the character of Captain Jack Sparrow on Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones (who appears in the third film). Depp also improvised Jack's catch phrase, "Savvy?" Additionally, one of the film's last lines, "Bring me that horizon", was conceived by Depp the morning the scene was filmed. Jack's “drunk walk” is actually the result of his "sea legs". When he's on land his walk is unbalanced, while at sea he walks straight. That is because he spends more time at sea than on land. Some people consider it as a triology because 4 and 5 are not as good as 1-3, but I always say to people to watch it and decide for yourself. It may be an unpopular opinion but I personally enjoy both. Btw there is an end-credits scene in all of the films (at least 1-3).

You should watch the hollywood Vienna 2018 10 minute medley of the pirates of the caribbean score. It's just incredible, with Hanz Zimmer himself coming up on the stage at the end. He outdid himself with this score, It's up there with the best of john williams for sure, although they have very different styles, with Zimmer using a lot of percussion and emotional solo instruments, and Williams going for the more classic big symphonic sound, combined with fantasy, child like wonder.

In the context of Jack, he was branded a pirate for doing a good deed. The East India company, and Cutler Beckett in particular, hired him to “transport cargo.” “Cargo” he instead liberated. There’s a deleted scene in AWE where Jack and Beckett discuss it. Jack says “People aren’t cargo.” It’s actually related to a scene in DMC as well. After Jack gets eaten by the Kraken, the crew go see Tia Dalma/Calypso. There are people all around outside, but they aren’t really discussed. They are the people Jack set free, paying their respects.

15:31 It's nice to hear someone appreciate out loud how ballsy Elizabeth is. I think a lot of people don't really notice it, maybe because it isn't commented on in the film itself. (Which, to be clear, I think is a good thing; I like that the movie allows her coolness to speak for itself.) Pirates invade her home, and instead of just hiding she fights back as best she can; even _tries_ to grab a sword, which she has no clue how to use. (Which, when you think about it, means she was mentally prepared to square up to a freaking pirate with a weapon she's never touched in her life 😂) When hiding and defending fails, she practically _demands_ that they take her to their captain to negotiate. During dinner with Barbossa, the _moment_ she feels genuinely threatened she _goes at him with a goddamn table knife._ Ill-advised, yes, but you _have_ to admire the sheer moxie. She even throws in with Will a little bit during the final fight, despite having nowhere near the fighting experience. And just in general, she dives right into all the craziness, and is constantly taking the initiative: burning the rum and foliage to create a signal; sneaking off the Dauntless to save herself from the ambush and Will from the cave; boarding the Interceptor to rally everyone to help her save Will; rowing to the cave _by herself_ when they refuse; etc. She doesn't walk through this movie assuming that she can afford to wait for things to happen or for other people to do things. If she knows something needs doing and sees no one else doing it, she just gets up and does it herself, and never mind how difficult or scary or risky it is. And this is all so impressive because it's not like anybody prepared or groomed her for this kind of life - quite the opposite in fact, she's the most sheltered of all the main characters aside from maybe her father. This is just _how she naturally is._ She's made out of nothing but guts and pluck.

I remember there being very little faith in the media that this film would succeed at the box office. First of all, it was based on a fairground ride (unheard of), secondly it was a pirate film - they hadn't had a lot of success in recent decades. Memories of the disastrous Cutthroat Island (1995) still abound, one of the biggest flops in history at the time. If I had to pick one aspect that saved this from a similar fate, it would be the performance of Johnny Depp. When he started doing what was essentially a Keith Richards impression, even the directors thought he was joking. He convinced them to trust him and the rest is history. By the way Keith Richards features in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

To be fair, it wasn't only Johnny (although you can't deny how he's bound to this franchise). But the whole cast was absolutely stellar, together with the script. However, I think the most important part is actually the budget. If they hadn't gone all out for the sets, styling and and location picks then it would have ended up like all the other pirate movies before it. It was a really big gamble that payed off.

Every man that had taken a coin from the chest must give back their blood (In this case the whole crew of the Black Pearl) but since they trapped/drowned Wills father before they knew that they go for the only other option which is Will because he shares his fathers blood. And also the curse only activates if you take a coin directly from the chest.

Jack is not Jack in Dead man tell no tales, and at least to me, the reason I love the Pirates movies is because it has complex meaningful characters that are constantly making decisions based on their inter motivations, and to see our favorite character become a useless drunk idiot in the 5th movie, puts a sour taste in my mouth. The Pirates of the Caribbean water ride, which is the "inspiration" for the motion picture series, was the last major ride attraction added to Disneyland that was personally conceived of and designed by Walt Disney himself and the " place name" is pronounced "kareh- BEE-un" because THAT'S how Walt Disney pronounced it. The ride officially opened to the public on March 18th 1967 however its creator did not get to witness the opening as he had passed away the previous December from cancer. The ride was developed and built by Arrow Development who had developed the first "log flume" type amusement park ride in 1963 for installation at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington Texas which Walt Disney personally visited while the ride was being tested in the Six Flags PARKING LOT prior to its permanent installation inside the Spain section of the theme park under the name El Aserradero (The Sawmill)

This is a fantastic film--I love how you described it as live-action Looney Tunes. Just don't expect the same perfect balance of humor, action, and fun in the sequels, as the plots get more and more convoluted and they take themselves more seriously. The 2nd and 3rd are worth watching, but I'd stop there.

Watch the last two & form your own opinion about them, please. They are still fun, action packed, awesome movies, whether people like them or not.

What makes Jack so enjoyable is mainly because a lot of that came from Depp doing improvising, he basically made that character who he is. Another interesting thing is this is one of the few, possibly like the only Disney films that will go this dark.

The corset scenes make me roll my eyes. No, you don't faint from not being able to breathe. They actually give good support to the waist and breasts.

I agree. I roll my eyes every time they call her bodice a corset. Corsets are strapless, bodices have adjustable straps. A lady is laced into her bodice or corset according to her comfort level much in how we adjust how we wear bras in this this era.

Funny you said that you felt as if you were watching a Looney Tunes cartoon, JD had said the he loosely based Captain Jack on a sort of cross between Pepe Le Phew and Keith Richards! That said, you are going to have so much fun with these films - just remember to hide the rum.

Great reaction to such an iconic film! I know people will try to dissuade you to react to the 4th and 5th films. While they may not be more iconic, they do have their moments and are worth the watch to conclude the series on the two icons, Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Hector Barbossa. Also if you wish, there is a short POTC film called Wedlocked which reveals the reasons why Captain Jack Sparrow got slapped by Scarlett and Giselle and why Cotton got silenced. Other pirate films I highly recommend for you to check out are: Cutthroat Island, Treasure Planet, Muppets Treasure Island, Swiss Family Robinson, Treasure Island (2012), Hook, Peter Pan (Disney’s and 2003 film), and Dreamwork’s Sinbad. 🏴‍☠️⚔️☠️🪙🩸🐶🗝️💛🤎🧡🖤❤️

when this came out on DVD there was a whole second disc of featurettes about the locations, shipbuilding, characters, costumes, makeup, cgi for the skeleton pirates... and about how it was so expensive and silly that they were all sure it'd flop!

The King and his men stole the Queen from her bed And bound her in her bones The seas be ours and by the powers Where we will, we’ll roam Yo Ho, All Hands, Hoist the Colours High Heave Ho, Thieves and Beggars Never shall we die Yo Ho, Haul Together, Hoist the Colours High Heave Ho, Thieves and Beggars, never shall we die Some men have died, some men are alive Others sail on the sea With the keys to the cage and the devil to pay We lay to Fiddler’s Green The bell has been raised from its watery grave Do you hear it’s sepulchral tone? We are a call to all, pay heed the squall and turn your sail toward home Yo Ho, All Hands, Hoist the Colours High Heave Ho, Thieves and Beggars, Never shall we die Yo Ho, Haul together, Hoist the Colours High Heave Ho, Thieves and Beggars, never shall we die,

This movie was the first time I really saw Johnny Depp's amazing versatility as an actor. If you want to see a really extreme Depp performance, watch 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.' It's based on a book so insane I was sure the only way to make it into a movie was to animate it. But Depp gives the performance that carries the gonzo energy and makes the live-action believable.
