Emmy, my grandma (and I'm 70) used to put Miracle Whip instead of mayo in PB sandwiches. I think the tangy sweetness of that is actually better. We had this a lot when we were kids. And people often use the word Mayo when they are referring to Miracle whip. So that may be why you didn't taste an obvious difference.

Random addition to this convo: In my house we buy both mayo and miracle whip because they each have their better qualities for different things. For example, I don’t like MW on my regular turkey and cheese sandwiches but I also don’t like regular mayo on my tuna sandwiches. For this reason we are stuck buying both and use each for different purposes. P.S. peanut butter is delicious on burgers!

This is reminding me of when I was a kid. My mom would make peanut butter grilled cheese. A thin layer of pb works. I remember not being able to taste the peanut butter and it just adding to creaminess of the cheese. We used butter on both sides of each slice of bread. Mom's go to quick dinner, though, was Velveeta shells mac and cheese, canned tuna, and peas. It was my favorite thing to eat as a little kid. I went into foster care as a younger teen but now that I'm 18, mom and I rebuilt our relationship so she makes this for me whenever I visit her from college.

Peanut butter sandwiches were a common lunch when I was a school boy in the 60's . In our household, we used Miracle Whip instead of mayo. Any kind of unsweetened nut butters go really, really well with savory, sour, or spicy foods. Sweetened works too, but it’s not as versatile. Peanut butter has got to be one of the easiest foods to combine with other foods. There are hardly any flavors that it clashes with, unless of course you hate peanut butter itself. I’m a big fan of combining pb, lemon, soy sauce, and fresh basil as a sauce for all kinds of savory foods. It’s amazing.

As I was watching this, I was thinking that it might be really good with the onions sauteed. I had eaten peanut butter and pickle sandwiches before (and liked them a lot). But I had the idea to experiment a bit. Grilled the bread (thinking like a grilled cheese sandwich), sauteed some RED onions, because I like them a bit more than just white ones, then spread the peanut butter on the bread and alternated layers of sliced dill pickle (home made) with the carmelized / sauteed onions. Freaking awesome, in my opinion.

In the 60’s my 2 older brothers ate all of these combinations including p butter and jalapeño, and p butter and sardines growing up, but the peanut butter/onion also had yellow mustard. It was actually my favorite. Our mom would get so upset when she found out what they made myself and my little brother and sister eat for lunch. I put peanut butter, fry sauce (mayo+relish+ketchup) tomato, onion, and some times mustard.

I've had that once, with some Parmesan cheese shreds on it as well. It wasn't that bad, but there were a bit too many flavors at once. But when there's nothing left in the fridge, well you just gotta' make do with what you've got.

I've been eating peanut butter and mayo sandwiches for almost all of my 74 years. My mother liked peanut butter and bananas sandwiches. I did stop eating white bread in my mid twenties. We were not required by hard times to consume these, we just liked them.

April Manint that’s what I thought too. I’ve never had it but read a book that mentioned a peanut butter and pickle sandwich and I always thought the author was talking about dill pickles.

I agree, April. It has to be dill pickles. I keep dill sandwich slices in the fridge specifically for peanut butter and pickle sandwiches.

I grew up eating peanut butter and dill pickles too. Haven't eaten them since I was a kid though.

I feel like I can understand how peanut butter and mayo came about, but I'll give that one a pass. The other two, thinking about it from the perspective of Thai food, I can certainly understand how they could be good. Possibly even better: peanut butter and fried onions. I bet that'd be awesome.

Growing up, one of my favorite sandwiches was a peanut butter and maple syrup sandwich. The daycare I went to couldn't afford much food, but they would mix together peanut butter and syrup (about 2 parts pb to 1 part syrup, I think, though you can play with the ratio as you like) and just put it in a sandwich! It's become a comfort food of mine.

I tried pb+onion and it caused my eyes to tear the whole time I tried pb+dill which reminded me of sushi because of the vinegar I tried pb+marshmallow, which is good if you toast the marshmallows Thanks Emmy!

To be fair unless you really like the spicy crunch it's gotta be a Vidalia onion like Emmy uses in this video! They are a variety of onion that is not very spicy so the natural sugars can be tasted without caramelizing them. They are grown in soil with low sulfur content and thus the onions are unable to make very strong sulfur compounds which is what they use to produce their hot defense chemicals.
