This guy claims that he used to be able to cut through here, but based on where he ran aground, it was more of a misjudgment than a shifted sandbar that caused him to call in a dispatch. That being said, sandbars, particularly ones near inlets, tend to shift and grow over time, and especially after large storms such as hurricanes. We had a Cat 3 hurricane (Idalia) come through exactly 3 months prior and the sandbars in the area definitely shifted a bit just from this one storm. This is why it’s important to keep your charts updated and also keep your eyes outside the boat and looking at the water.
AI-Generated Description:
🚤 Join us on this towboat adventure as we respond to a distress call from a 24ft Sailfish center console that ran aground! The boat owner insists he used to navigate through the area successfully, but today's mishap suggests otherwise. Was it a misjudgment or a shifted sandbar? Let's dive into the details.
⚓ Understanding the dynamics of waterways is crucial for every boater. In this video, we discuss the impact of changing sandbars, especially near inlets, and how they can be affected by natural events like hurricanes. Just three months ago, Hurricane Idalia (a Cat 3 storm) swept through, leaving its mark on the local waters. The aftermath? Shifted sandbars!
🗺️ One key takeaway is the importance of regularly updating your charts. Sandbars are notorious for evolving over time, and post-storm changes can catch even seasoned boaters off guard. Our towboat crew emphasizes the significance of keeping a keen eye on the water and surroundings, as relying solely on past experiences may not be foolproof.
👀 Whether you're a seasoned captain or a newbie navigating these waters, this video serves as a reminder to stay vigilant and adapt to the ever-changing conditions of our maritime environment. At least you have a decent well equipped boat to work from. I've seen some of these tow guys using boats that looked like they just came from the scrap yard.

@CaptKenO Really enjoy your videos. I worked at Lowrance Electronics as a EE Design Engineer in their R&D for about 15 years.(Long ago) I spent a lot of time on the water testing Sonar, GPS, etc. I thought I was a decent boat operator until I started watching the things you do. You have skills, young man. Your average person buys and boat and goes out with no or little skills. My dad took me out 2 days a week fishing, so I grew up on the water. And my dad drove trucks his entire life, so I could back a trailer before I learned had to drive going forward. Now old and retired I get watch channels like yours and dream about being on the water. Stay safe out there!

12:38 dolphin off the bow of your boat. Time for a wetsuit! Or at least half of a wetsuit.

Haha. Yep. There were a couple around that day. If it's cold enough for a wetsuit, I'm not getting in the water 😂 Besides, once I get out of the water I've just got a cold suit on

At 3:25 you have insufficient sight under water. Do you have polaroid sunglasses ? When I sail or kayak I wear polaroid, it really helps. Greetings from a Dutch fan of this channel.

I know this is too late to help on this job but this Is a great opportunity to use an Air cannon to throw a tow rope to the other boat. An Air cannon is what they use to throw T-shirts to FANS at sports arenas. You could air cannon a bean bag with a strong string line to the other boat and they could pull in the rope by themselve, from your boat to theirs..

The problem with that is the I'm relying on them to tie the knot...something I generally prefer not to do because they'll either tie something that comes undone, or something that can't be undone. Neither are great outcomes. Plus, there the liability side of shooting at people 😂

Someone should invent an electronic chart with GPS that shows where you are and what the water depth is.

i know its not related to this video but always been a question between sea tow and tow boat on how far off you guys will come. where i am at we can run 70 miles out maybe more at times if something were to happen do you guys ever make those types of runs? what is the farthest you have been? like the videos man

I can't speak for Seatow, but TowBoat US has defined limits (that don't seem to be hard limits) that vary from location to location, but it really seems to be a $$$ limit than distance. Meaning if you're really far offshore, your TBUS policy only covers X $$$, so you may be on the hook for the remaining cost, but they'd still come get you. If you have a specific area you frequent, I would call up your local tbus/seatow and ask them though. The furthest I've personally gone is 75nm W of Anna Maria Island, so it was about 85nm from my home port in Sarasota. I hit T storms for the first 40nm on the way out and then for about 50nm on the way back in

I'm biased...but honestly, both are great companies. Depending on where you boat, one might be better than the other in that specific area, but overall they're comparable in most regards.
