In this video I'll demonstrate a case variation of the book described by Peter Verheyen in "Der Gebrochene Rücken: A variation of the German case binding" (2009). So it's a variation of a variation.

Another great video. I was familiar with the technique but didn't know how to do it. My teacher, a Swiss-German mastercrafsman, who sadly passed away recently, realized a few of them but I never got the chance to learn it. I have a few of his bindings done that way, including one in parchment very similar to those displayed in the article by Peter Verheyen. Thank you.

Ive been looking for a binding technique that will match the aesthetic of a series of books i will be making over the summer, this will do the job great! I heard about this technique in a bittermelonbindery video and my curiosity had piqued, thanks for this very informative and in-depth tutorial👍👍👍

What in your mind makes a good binding - I quite like the flat appearance of the three piece binding - I have just made my first book a sewn board binding, its not perfect by anyone's standards but it is not bad for a first attempt - Thanks again for your videos - Stay Safe

A very complex question. For me a well bound book functions well and is attractive and nice to use. S it must open well, last with good usage, and be aesthetically pleasing. All the best, DAS

I'm loving these German bindings! This is definitely the nicest of the Bradel bindings, it turns the step at the edge of the joint into a feature rather than something to work around. Have you tried a millimetre binding? I love the way they look, with the continuous marble across the entire book, but I don't have a Scharfix(sp?) or such to pair the leather thin enough. I'm going to try one in cloth, but I don't think it will have quite the same effect.
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed. Yes they look great. And if you look around on the web you can see how creative you can be with them. I'm experimenting with the edelpappband now. I have a Schärffix but not the nice leather. The kangaroo is a bit dull. Ciao!

Thanks for another good vid! Is painter's tape (blue low adhesive masking tape) a good alternative to hold things together instead of dabs of paste?
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, in most cases. I use it all the time. Great for holding boxes together while the adhesive sets. But in this case I was pushing the text block into the case fairly hard and I think the tape would have given way. Happy binding!

Could you do this 3 piece bradel binding technique with a leather spine piece and bookcloth boards instead? Or would a split board style binding (with a hollow spine) be more appropriate for leather?
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 3 ай бұрын
It looks great with a leather spine.
@rudolfaligierski3043

Question: Please correct me if I'm wrong, but those first centimeters from the spine that has a step/bards thicness difference - wouldn't it weaken the adhesion of scrim/textblock to the covers? I mean even if you apply pressure - foredge will adhere, but will the part near the spine where there is actually a scrim? I hope I explained my question clearly, english not a first language.
@DASBookbinding

It ends up the same thickness from fore-edge to spine edge. So, no.

Thanks Darryn, I'd been looking forward to seeing that one - very well explained as always. You mentioned that you have an in-boards demo coming up later, can you explain what are the pros and cons of the two different variants please? Cheers!
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 4 жыл бұрын
Hi John. The book I did is far too chunky. This binding looks better with more delicate (smaller) elements (squares, thinner board, smaller joint). In both versions to get the refinement you need to be spot on with measurement and cutting. But then casing-in become very sensitive. But in-boards has challenges too like turning in the spine cover over paper, getting the boards to match the hight of the spine, attaching the spine piece so the squares are even. I prefer doing the in-boards version but I think it's best to start with the cased version. Tschuss!

Do you think it's possible to use leather with this type of binding? Where the spine piece is leather and the boards are in book cloth? I've done a handful of rounded and "backed" versions of this and I do like the design but I have a person that might that I want to try a leather spine version for. Other than thickness, I worry there's some shrinkage that would pull the leather out of the board.
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding Жыл бұрын
Hey! Yes, leather works really well. You do need to pare it very thin and use PVA as the adhesive and there will be very little pull. The heavy buckram's that I favour might look a bit heavy on the boards of this binding. But a nice fine cloth would look great. One of the Japanese bookcloths would look good. Darryn

@@DASBookbinding I'm a fan of Asahi textured book cloth...in this case I plan to use the Sage, brown leather/sage...and might do a third colour for the back board to give the book direction. It will be my first go at leather and though I'm a bit anxious about it, I at least won't have to worry about making up the corners lol. I do plan to use a thin cut leather, I'm sure I'd still have to pare it for the turn-inns. ...also, lol, what would you do for a rounded spine? Here in this vid, the book is a square back, so the spine is the same material as the boards. The first time I made the spine I used a single manilla card. Now I double that up. It makes the spine feel beefier, like the boards. Would you have a different suggestion?

I see the blue book at the beginning is rounded and backed. It doesn't look very 'backed', like it was squeezed near the spine and glued rounded. I took just a quick look at the link to Peter's work, does it contain instructions for this style? I like rounded and backed books rather than square backs, both for the aesthetics and rounded books are easier to thumb through....but mainly aesthetics.

Yes, you're right. These dinner books don't need such aggressive backing. A 45deg shoulder is fine. I should emphasise this more in future videos. You don't need to use a hammer for this.

Hi! If you're new to bookbinding then I might suggest the sewn board binding with only 2 or 3 sheets per section/signature. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdthpal807qnYGw.html If you have some experience then you might like the fold back sketchbook kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7eRf7xm2uDJYKM.html With the fold back sketchbook it is important the paper is short grain to allow it to fold back well. Good luck! DAS

I see that you mainly use pva glue. Is there any alternative to PVA? it's not available everywhere. Is a product like UHU suitable for this job? Since it's flexible when it dries and it's not water based.
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 3 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid it seems UHU looses it's stick over time. That's my experience anyway. I have used it to attach labels, because of the lack of moisture thing. And they have all fallen off with time. I've been experimenting with real glue - animal hide glue - and this might have issues with modern materials. Sorry I don;t have a good solution for you. All the best, Darryn
