This is an extended scene from "Der Untergang" Extended Edition. In this scene, the German soldiers are surrounded by the Soviets and they are waiting to surrender. General Mohnke and Dr. Schenck insist Traudl and Gerda to go through the Soviet soldiers and escape, as they might have a chance as women. Traudl is willing to go, but Gerda chooses to stay. They say farewell to each other with tears. On the other side, Mohnke and Schenck with other German soldiers are gathered underground. A young SS officer tells Schenck that he wants to join his group. As Soviet troops approach, the German troops begin to surrender. Otto Günsche, who witnesses this, runs back to Mohnke for report. Compared to the theatrical edition, several scenes are added to the extended edition like Traudl and Gerda having a conversation. Also, the insertion order of some scenes has changed.

(Subtitles are available in English and Korean.) Approximately three million German prisoners of war were captured by the Soviet Union during World War II. German soldiers preferred surrender to Western Allies such as the United States rather than surrender to the Soviet Union. Germans had treated Soviet prisoners brutally, and they knew that if they were captured by the Soviets, they would be treated equally, too. After the war, Western Allies transferred German POWs who had fought on the Eastern Front but surrendered to Western Allies to the Soviets. German POWs were sent to many parts of the Soviet Union, and were forced to labor in post-war reconstruction, often in harsh conditions like Siberia. Due to diseases, starvation and lack of medical care, it is estimated that approximately one million German POWs died in Soviet captivity from 1941 to 1956. When East Germany was established in 1949, many prisoners returned except for those who were considered to have committed war crimes. West Germany also negotiated with the Soviet Union for the return of POWs. The last prisoners returned to Germany in 1956.

Subtitles: Extended version, Gerda to Traudl: "I can't go any further" when she says it the second time. Mohnke, replying to Traudl's question: "maybe you can get through the ring, you could try. I think, anything is better than waiting here." Gerda: "I'm not going one single step further". SS-officer: "Herr Doctor, Herr Doctor" (again, the formal salutation). "I still feel commited to my oath." instead of "I am committed to my oath". Schenck: "Well, then you better should talk to the Brigadeführer." Traudl, in reply to Gerda: "I have to try it! Please don't be upset with me." instead of "I am going to try it. Please don't get upset with me."

In actuality, Gerda did leave with Traudl, in a group led by Mohnke. The 2 of them did reach the Elbe along with a third woman named Else Kruger. Mohnke and the men were captured before they could get out of Berlin. Traudl couldn't reach the east bank of the Elbe, so she walked back to Berlin, arriving in July. Someone recognized her, and she was arrested, but released after a few months. She eventually managed to secure authorization to live in the British sector in early 1946. She finally settled in Bavaria. She died in 2002 at age 81, in Munich.

In this film I couldn't help but respect Mohnke. He gets portraited as one of the most sympathetic nazis in this film: one the generals that actually makes his hand dirty and wants to minimize casualties. According to Wikipedia, in real life he was allegedly involved in the cases of murder of prisoners of war. Never brought to trial over these allegation. There was insufficient evidence.

So was Sepp Dietrich, who commanded the 6th SS Panzer Army that was responsible for the Malmedy massacre in the Ardennes, although he may have been unaware of it. But Joachim Peiper was personally involved, and escaped hanging or a firing squad after the war. He finally got his due at the hands of a French communist group called the Avengers, who set his house on fire, with him in it, in the 1970s. Why someone with his history decided that living openly in France was a good idea is beyond me.

@@ggregd "It was also not the front line Soviet troops who committed most of the crimes, it was the rear echilons." --> That's correct. It's not usually the front line troops that do that sort of stuff. They tend to be crack professionals, relatively speaking, focused on fighting. It's the garbage bringing up the rear, the garrison troops who are on par with prison guards, that terrorize the civilian populations. There are exceptions of course, but they tend to be highly radicalized (e.g., SS taking out reprisals against villages in France during 1944).

@AquaAyaya
@AquaAyaya 2 ай бұрын
Well, to be honest i don't know much about the topic of female soldiers, this is a field i have never studied. Waffen SS were either 1) SS who transfered to the Waffen SS 2) soldiers from the Wehrmacht who voluntarily transfered to the Waffen SS (note that this was a one-ticket trip as it was impossible for a Waffen SS member to go back to the Wehrmacht) 3) volunteers from civilians (they formed a large part of the Waffen SS divisions, as you may know a good half of the german SS divisions were formed of foreign volunteers, some of them were still fighting in Berlin) Now, does a woman fits in one of these categories? Well, that's unlikely. The next question would be, why wearing an uniform anyway, and that was likely to look like a man, since women were usually raped, whatever were their nationality, their age or their health However, if someone have some ideas, let us know :D I'd like to know as well
