I experienced the August 10, 2020 derecho in Chicago. It was quite a sight to see! Tree branches down all over the neighborhood, and an EF-1 tornado passed about 7 blocks from my apartment!

We had one in may 2017 here in Alcoa, TN and we didn’t have power for 4 days. It was terrifying. I remember nothing crazy weather wise was going on and then literally 10 minutes later I’m hiding in my bathtub praying my house doesn’t blow away.

I experienced a Derecho when I lived in Edinburg, VA,Shenandoah County to be precise. Very scary...that's as close to a Tornado as I ever want to get!

Up here in Ontario, Canada, I experienced a derecho with hurricane force winds and a lot of rain. I knew something was up when just before our power went out, the pressure in my ears drastically changed. I looked outside and saw with the strong winds that it was raining sideways and tree debries was coming down. I wondered what this storm was because the last time I saw weather of this magnitude was when I living on the east coast of Nova Scotia where we had experienced a hurricane when I was small child. Our apartment building's power wasn't restored until almost a week later and some parts of Ontario, including our city was out of power for 2 weeks. It was crazy as my highrise didn't have power, water, heat (it went down to low 30sF at night) and no land lines so once cellphone ran out of power, that was it. Food spoiled and had to carry it down 16 flights of stairs and outside for garbage pick up.

I think I had a derecho once at a summer camp in hill country Texas in July of 2022.

Something we in California have never witnessed, and most of us have never even heard of.

Have seen photos of the damage they can cause, including large grain bins flattened.

This happened and no one got me for my prevention program

It’s nothing but a huge storm front. Not complicated. Now we know almost nothing new.

Here’s some quick wisdom: First, it’s pronounced Deh-deh-choh. Not durechio lol Second, derecho in English means directly, or straight ahead. Which is exactly what it is and does. It’s a fast-moving widespread burst of thunderstorms moving in a straight line caused by a storms downdraft and it’s cool air dropping rapidly back down to the surface.
