Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another PATREON request with Depeche Mode and their song "People Are People." This 80's dance, synth pop song features deep lyrics and great video. This is by far the most fun I've had with Depeche Mode. Defitnely in the top favorites of mine. See my full reaction now!

In that time it were rather Gareth Jones/Daniel Miller/Alan Wilder. Alan took over sound engineering with MFTM, which was almost produced by himself.

That is wrong. Alan contributed greatly but he was NOT the only one. They had a team of engineers and producers back then. Alan really didn’t take that much control until the MFTM era.

@@EANDM71 Of course, there is always a production team producing a record. The only thing that strikes you is that since Alan is no longer a member of the band, the records have nothing to offer in terms of sound

THANK YOU! Alan was the catalyst for DM. The sampling, programming, arrangement, production is legendary! As were Flood/Gareth/Miller and the other producers/engineers that contributed. However, DM was not much in my book before or after Alan.

You forgot Behind the wheel which in my opinion it’s their best song and of course my favorite, there are also some more like precious, policy of truth, everything counts, just can’t get enough, shake the disease, never let me down again, Jesus this band another lever. We will never see anything similar like Depeche Mode.

In case no one has explained it before: Alan Wilder did literaly throw kitchen pots and stuff down the stairs and recorded it only to sample the sounds later on his comp. Back in the 80s that was a challenge! People often forget about it because nowadays everthing is so simple to produce. Back then he had to improvise and be creative a LOT! So Kudos to Alan Wilder! He was the sound of Depeche Mode and will ever be! Martin was the lyrics and Dave was the voice. That goes without saying, doesn't it. RIP Andrew! We will miss you!

Depeche Mode, along with Pet Shop Boys and A-ha were were my 3 favorite groups growing up. All legendary bands who continue to make great music but in my opinion, all of their best music came during the 80’s.

Depeche Mode has been known to sample everything from the sound of a bicycle and pots and pans (Blasphemous Rumors) to a motorcycle (Stripped), conveyor belts (More Than A Party), a ping pong ball (Pipeline), and crates being slammed on stairs (Personal Jesus). They are the masters of sampling which is why People are People uses so many samples like the bell and the sound of striking metal. Your reaction to this song is absolutely golden and I hope you will check out some of the songs I've mentioned and others to hear their musical and sampling genius.

It was the hit that really propelled them to Europe. Then there was "Master and Servant". After this, little by little, the band drifted towards an increasingly dark and almost disembodied music.

People Are People (1984) is one of the first Depeche Mode songs I loved. Then came Question Of Time (1986) Strangelove (1987), Enjoy The Silence (1990), Precious (2005) and many more. Great band, great music, great sounds, great melodies. I love Depeche Mode. It's one of my favorite bands. I was crazy about them in the 80's. They were the best then.

Awesome! Actually, Depeche Mode used to record the sound they make while hitting various metallic things. I wouldn't be surprised if they'd used actual submarine sounds

If you think this went under the radar, wait until you hear Enjoy the Silence and Shake the Disease from Depeche Mode. I'm a huge fan of A-ha and Depeche Mode. A-ha's best song for me is Hunting High and low...powerful haunting vocals and music and that's gone under the radar too.....I'm actually going to listen to Hunting High and Low now....love it 😁

One thing I really need to suggest, is a little "band" of dad & his 2 kids, they play Depeche Mode on household items and children's toys! They are adorable and really kill it! They are called DMK, you'll love the love they have and they're so talented!!

AAAh yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So incredible sound. When underground sound like Einsturzende neubauten meet pop new wave. During the Alan Wilder era they went out and recorded different sounds and sampled them creating some of the most unique and amazing soundscapes in music history. Sadly after Wilder departed the group the band abandoned the dark edgy atmospheric sounds.

This song on MTV is what BROKE DM in America! They have been my favorite band since I purchased their Some Great Reward in 1985 after seeing this video! DM hasn't played this song live since 1988.... Hoping they will sing it in a future show and I will get to see that in person!

I thought you would of known this one, as was a hit in the US and still plays on radio, TV. etc And some of these sounds are organic and not from a synth! When they said first song to be popular on radio on Wiki they changed wording but they meant in the US not in general!

Hi! I'm a newbie just subscribed to your channel this morning. Speaking of Depeche mode, I can't forget 'pipeline' in '83. Listening through headphones, I almost had a nosebleed. The stimulation of the new surround percussion hit the brain directly. I thought they were just good studio recordings, but when they came to Japan I heard them live and was blown away. Everyone in the audience went wild.

This song would be the theme soundtrack to Germany's TV coverage of the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. The instrumental, industrial intro was also lend to a UK BBC TV children's programme theme 'It'll Never Work' in the 1990's.

Great hit. I remember this one being aired during the late summer-early autumn on "Canal plus" (a new private french TV born on November 1984) before the channel started to officially broadcast. Thumb up! ==> Hey les français, réagissez à cette chanson vous aussi. Notice: this song has been recommended on YT several times if I recall correctly, especially because of the industrial/organic sounds.

Those sounds were not, in fact, just keyboard and synth arrangements. As I'm sure peopole have pointed out by now (considering this reaction is 2+ years old), the industrial sounds were hammers smashing anvils, among various other things. The band members took quite a field trip recording sounds like these for this record

First released on Some Great Reward in 82 and it was not a hit then. But re release on its own titled album propelled it to greater renown. Powerful in both meaning and music, this is one I have loved from the beginning.

Yeah, people don’t remember or don’t realize they were a major influence in the creation of modern industrial rock/metal…. Folks tend to forget the banging on sheet metal, snapping scissors, throwing pans, grinding things together, smashing glass, rolling items, shaking jars with objects of various sorts in them and so on to record and program into their synthesizers and to sometimes partially perform live. Heck, with their blues leanings they at some point not too far back made what I can best describe as a an industrial-blues record…. Trent Reznor at various times has made reference to them and described them as being who made him realize you could make beautiful noise and at least once described his first DM concert as “spiritual” lol.

When Vince Clarke and Martin Gore were in Dépèche Mode there wasn't enough space for two great composers, even if "Get the balance right" is my preferred DM song. And it also allowed Vince to create Yazoo with Allison Moyet (ah, Don't go!).

As a electrofan following Kraftwerk since early 70:es i found both Depech, Eurythmics (when they where The Tourists) and Front 242 in early 80.es. Roskilde was the place to go to listen to new music. Strangelove for me is about the LBGT coummunity in the 80.es that was an outcast for the society by the biggest advocate Thatcher and Reagan.

They are great.. recommend listening to more of them.. the synth was amazing.. this is 1984, they still tour i believe too. and i've heard they are awesome live. I have heard some live versions and the voices are almost the same as on tape.

I grew up with this in the 80s and my two older cousins were hardcore fans (one of them loved madonna as well) - so what could have went wrong with my musical education :D

There are some great documentaries floating around that delve deep into the bands creative forays in sound sampling. If u have any free time I highly recommend checking them out. Everything they were doing at the time was cutting edge n a whole lotta people thought it "wasn't REAL music". LOL! Detroit Techo DJs were spinning samples of DM by the mid 80s. They influenced so many people in so many genres...

I'm guessing they were tired of playing this because it was their first top 40 hit and were probably asked to play it constantly. They had plenty of songs out before People Are People including my favorite, Get The Balance Right. Although it may not be their favorite, you're correct, People Are People is a great song, from a great band.
