DH could rip his front door off and he’d still shred on it😉. Watching Derek back in the 70’s and beyond surfing Newport peak was some very special👍. Still a master waterman. Moved to Byron bay years ago and I’m walking down to paddle out at the pass then I see this dude shredding/sliding and of course it was DH. Some time later ran into Derek at iga west Byron and had an incredible conversation with him. Waves, board designs and all sorts of things. Such a cool cat DH✌️❤️

So many memory of that day. I remember standing out on the Button with the photographers, watching guys doing free-fall takeoffs, almost from the side view. Photographers being taken out the back, dangling from helicopters. Dogs on the beach almost drowning in the shorebreak. Seeing the huge sets......minutes before they arrived at Bells. The ground rumbling with the crashing of the waves. And to top it all off, the weather was sunny with a blue sky. I was there on my own as a 16 year old. So stoked!
