I have now walked more than 1,370 miles since leaving Springer Mountain in Georgia. In this video, I arrive in New Jersey for a couple of days and walk 70 miles across The Garden State!
Also, if you’d like to support my videos, I have a support page on which viewers can “buy me a coffee” as encouragement for the time and effort I put into making these videos 🙏 ko-fi.com/derekcullen

And, we're so glad you went on to live that life because you've touched so many of us in so many amazing ways. You've taken us places that we now hope to go or that we may never get to see but now we can see. You've filled hearts with joy and tears. You've opened our minds and our hearts. You've brought us together as a community following your adventures. Blessings be yours!❤

There are very few hikers that I watch who have their soul tapped and accessible. Your spirit and soul (which is all of us and everything) comes spilling out in these videos. I am so grateful to have found your channel. My wife also likes to watch them and gets mad if I watch one without her. I think she likes watching yours more than she did mine in 2017. 😁🤘🕓

As someone who has been watching or reading AT experiences for over 10 years, I enjoy yours much more than most. The perspective is refreshing, and you aren't just documenting the party aspect of the AT. You are able to capture what many never find during their hike. I look forward to seeing you finish.

I have been following you on KZfaq before I started following you on Facebook... I'm glad, because I can have a sneak peak on your posts (always looking forward to them). I don't think you have the slightest idea of how much of an inspiration you are to many of us on here. The experiences you are going thru in the Appalachian trail are very much similar to life! The ups and downs, the challenges that come with loss and success. There's always the silver lining and I'm very much of a believer that nothing happens by coincidence. Everyone and everything has a purpose, a meaning to our life, the process of life! I'm so glad you are in a better mindset. God has a purpose for you and I believe you are a wonderful story teller...maybe that's your calling. Keep up the faith... Thank you for sharing your grand adventure buttercup! 💕

When you were describing the Storm , I was thinking of the words that John O'Donohue wrote. You saw a bear....yayyy. Great video Derek, it draws me in and holds my attention from start to finish. Love what that guy said to you about his 89 year old Dad. Thank you and stay bold. "This is the time to be slow, Lie low to the wall Until the bitter weather passes. Try, as best you can, not to let The wire brush of doubt Scrape from your heart All sense of yourself And your hesitant light. If you remain generous, Time will come good; And you will find your feet Again on fresh pastures of promise, Where the air will be kind And blushed with beginning."

My own ancestors were some of those Ulster Scots. Penniless, hopeless, hungry. When you reminded me of them I was realizing that they must have been so grateful to take the Great Valley Trail and see the mountains go rolling away forever. Most of the East land was already taken. But they persevered on. Climbing boulder fields until they found their own place in the sun. Thanks on their behalf for telling their stories-long ago in 1823.

There is part of the Camino like that near the end. It brings strange thoughts of isolation but also thoughts of trust in yourself and a reckoning of all the times you have trusted yourself before and got yourself through situations. There is always the thought that you can offer it as a penance for a family member or friend or even oneself. This increases the value of each step. 👍 Great adventure. Keep on going. 🎉👍🙏

Yep...those Summer temps are kicking in... My friend, with the combination of higher temperatures, and the boulder fields you're now hiking around...be very cautious and keep a keen eye out for snakes. Those crevices and voids among the boulders are favorite hiding places for Timber Rattlers and Copperheads. Not trying to scare you, but definitely warrants caution. Be aware of where you are reaching with your hands...not just reaching into "blind spots."

Not everyone is a good storyteller, but you have the gift. I found in 1994 when I got home after my thru hike that it was hard to convey what my hike was like to friends and family. Most would ask what was so great about the AT when it seemed that I would struggle nearly every day. In your first few videos of this series, you had me back on that emotional rollercoaster that is a thru hike. The really extreme lows and magical highs, sometimes only minutes apart. Your hiking friend Emilia? sitting enjoying a view , amongst thousands of wildflowers and singing Amazing Grace was magical. And then Lee sharing the story of his son's death shook me. It has been thirty years since my thru hike and I believe you are by far the best at capturing what an AT thru hike is like. Thank you for pulling me in for the hike.

That was an amazing Bear sighting!...great sighting at a safe distance...you're very fortunate. That was a great story of your overnight camping experience in Botswana...must have been an amazing bike ride across Africa. Many years ago, I was camped near a lakeshore and about 4:00am in the morning could hear a larger animal(?) (much larger than a squirrel) approaching...crunching fallen Autumn leaves as it approached. Similar to yourself, I sat up with keen attention...listening as this being (wasn't sure if animal or man) walked right next to and past my tent...towards the Lake. About 5:30am, once a bit light, I looked out of my tent to discover a large Beaver hanging out and splashing around at the Lake's edge.

Your videos are amazing! I recently ran across one of your videos and it literally changed my life. I have recommended them to quite a few individuals. It's not just the beauty I see but your words. I found myself in turmoil as you described when beginning your first journey in Africa. I was watching one of your walks in Ireland, which I happened across accidentally. Something you said completely changed my perspective on life. If I had more time, I would explain in detail, but I wanted to say thank you for bringing peace back into my life. Back in 2003 my husband and I took a vacation to Maine and sailed on a schooner out of Camden for a week. After that adventure, we drove up to Baxter State Park and walked about five miles on the Appalachian Trail. At the time my husband was 57. He was going around saying he was getting old, even though he was in very good health and looked much younger than his age. We ran across 3 hikers who were just finishing their journey, walking from Georgia to Maine. We talked for a bit, and I asked their ages. One said he was 78; another 79; and the other 82. I looked at my husband and said to forget about age; just enjoy life as long as you have breath in you. He never talked about age again. Also, thank you for your walks around Ireland. My husband and I have been blessed to go on 3 trips there, once for over 6 weeks. We always drove and got off the beaten path, so I understand what you say about tourists probably never getting more to see than the usual tourist spots. Those are beautiful, but "off the beaten path" is the way to go. I would give anything to get back there again, but I doubt if that will happen. We are currently making our own adventures here in America, traveling Route 66, and most of the national parks in the west. Keep safe, Derek, and enjoy your journey!

It amazes to hear that estimates suggest there are around 31.5 million residents in the US who claim Irish ancestry. This represents roughly 9.5% of the total US population, making it one of the largest ancestry groups in the country. Even more amazing when Ireland has a population of 5.1 million. I have a deep appreciation of the tragedy of the potato famine where 1/3 left, 1/3 died and 1/3 survived. Irish roots so deep in AMerica. I look forward to your videos! Will
