Audio Viking contacted me because they're new on the scene, and wanted advice about what an editor needs in a trailer sound effects library. The terms of their library are that if used in a commercial video, each sound effect is pay-per-use (as opposed to libraries such as Boom Library which are pay once and use at your own discretion) I asked the composer if I could use their sounds in a non-commercial/monetized video if I credited them, and they gave me permission. If you're interested, I would contact them for permission and access. Just please please credit them if they give you permission, and respect their licensing costs if you use it on something you're getting paid for!

Derek Lieu I would of course give credit, but just to clear it up: if I'm not making money off the video I don't have to pay for them? Or at least that's how it worked for you?

15 parts about 2 - 3 hours each.... i figured 30 to 45 hours tops. But damn, that's like 2,5 hours for each second. I haven't really watched any of the creation streams, so sorry if I seem ignorant about this, but what exactly consumes so much time? Because at first hand, this generally seems like just a sequence of cuts of cutscenes and gameplay segments. Don't get me wrong though, still love the video!

Thanks! Each stream ranged between 2-5 hours long, and I also spent a lot of time off stream. The end result is of course a combination of cutscenes, gameplay, dialogue, music and sound effects. But finding the right pieces for each, deciding how they go together, and the timing of each can be quite a process. These numbers are very rough because each session I'd often be doing multiple tasks. ~15 hours capturing footage for the trailer. The first initial capture playthrough took about 10 hours (I'm not counting the first time I played the game for pleasure, which took me more like 15 hours) When recapturing, some shots took me several attempts in order to get just the right timing for what I wanted. For example, for the shot at 1:11 I recorded 20-30 takes! Sometimes I had to recapture for simple reasons like two lines of dialogue being mixed up with sound effects or other characters talking, or just sound effects I missed the first time. ~13 hours spent "breaking down" the game, which means going through all 10 hours of footage and choosing which lines of dialogue might be good for the trailer, and also which shots might be good. Then organizing the visuals and dialogue into categories so that when editing starts, it's easy to access different lines or visuals to suit the needs of each particular section. ~9 hours finding the right music (the first piece of music in the trailer is from a library production house, not the soundtrack). Listening to each music cue on the official soundtrack and deciding which might be good. The soundtrack itself is about 70 min. Searching for music can take a VERY long time. Had I not used so much of the soundtrack in the trailer, it would've taken much longer. Then after choosing the right cues I had to roughly edit together the music into the trailer's sections, and within each section I had to edit the music so the beats hit at the right moments between the dialogue and sound effects. ~9 hours going through all the dialogue I selected, roughly deciding what order things should go in. This can take a while because some initial ideas can be bad, or something you don't realize was good until later. Sections might need being simplified or some might need more. Either way, a lot of this process is rewatching the organized footage to find the right line. It's a very organic process that is sometimes from intuition, but also a lot of happy surprises! ~8 hours cutting in visuals. At this point in the process the sequence is roughly music and bits of visuals with the dialogue, so here I'd decide which set pieces to put in and where, and also other visuals to accompany the dialogue. Again, a lot of searching through footage and finding the right shot with the right composition, the right timing etc. Also this is when the timing of the visuals, dialogue and music get refined so that it's very tight with little to no spaces in between. ~7 hours adding in sound design either from the game or "whooshes, rises, hits" to emphasize cuts and moments. Also going through the whole cut to make sure dialogue levels are uniform and the music is properly mixed so everything is audible at the right time. -- Like I said, these numbers are fuzzy because there's overlap between tasks in the hours I kept, but should give a rough idea of the things I had to do to make the trailer. The process is just a lot of searching through footage, experimenting, thinking through the story, the timing, the sound and of course the technical assembly of things so they fit together just right. Also sprinkle lots of worry and self doubt throughout the entire time spent ^_^ This ended up being very long, but hopefully it gives a little insight! I don't blame anyone for looking at a 50+ hour playlist and saying "NOPE!" I hope someday you can make it to one of my streams to see it in action and/or ask some questions. Thanks again!

Thanks for the reply, really interesting When i was younger I did some AMVs in good old Windows Movie Maker and that was usually a simple "oooohh i like this track, lets put some incoherent anime scenes over it and call it a day" :P

Haha, I did AMVs too! Eventually transitioned to trailers since it's what I wanted to do for work, and also there are so many more moving parts in a trailer to play with ^_^
