Have now watched about five of these - Joey Barnett being the best, this being a close second...listening avidly to every second. steven beattie - some things are probably best forgotten. I'm a sober alcoholic (8yrs) and a friend of mine from AA was living and working in Japan during the height of his alcoholism. He said that anytime he hears Japanese, he immediately starts thinking about sake (his drink of choice) and that it's a trigger for his cravings. He was/is fluent in Japanese but it's not good for his sobriety to speak/hear it. He had to leave Japan to get sober and get his life together so his brain and his disease associate Japanese with alcohol. Fascinating stuff, that. I could totally relate to you dropping your voice to a whisper as you were telling your story! Shawn said it perfect, "programmed to whisper!"

Japanese prison sounds very tough indeed, but having seen and heard about Thai, Brazilian and a whole host of third world prisons (including the United States to an extent) where overcrowding, murdering, rioting, drug use and disease are rife, the Japanese ones then appear like heaven in comparison. Your own individual cell, clean living, no drugs, half decent food, and especially no murdering, raping and rioting, seems legit to me.

Steven, you are such a natural story teller, even though your experiences were harrowing, you found great humour amongst it all, and relay it so well. The Epi/Upi(sp?) stories had me rolling haha... I hope you write a book, go on the speaking circuit, and start your own KZfaq channel, you would be so successful as your talent for story telling, coupled with humour is so entertaining. I even abandoned my chores, and laid under a blanket on the sofa, to watch and listen, whereas usually my attention span is very low. Even though it pales in comparison, I used to work at a Japanese bank (Mitsubishi in Broadgate, London) and chatting was frowned upon, just head down. After I went to the loo, the manager asked me if I was sick, as she'd timed how long i spent away from my desk, and it was her way of telling me I'd taken too long. Fk that, I left within 2 weeks, I'll be damned if I'll let anyone treat me like a child or a robot. Wish you all the best Steven, and hope to hear/see more of you in the future...🤗 And to Shaun, credit to you for always letting your guests tell their stories without interruption 👍

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I had a guy ask me to hold a bag with $5,000 in it, while I was waiting for my bus in a Greyhound station in Chicago. I didn't get caught up in a similar situation because I told him to put it in a locker and have a nice day. I agree with you he's a normal bloke that made a bad decision, it could happen to anyone... who hasn't learned to watch for the signs of dangerous decisions.
