Hi Cathy! unfortunately the mascara is NOT water proof and yes it does smudge a little. You can coat it with other waterproof mascaras you own that can also volumizes your lashes, since this mascara doesn't do that. But regardless of being not water proof and volumizing, this mascara can lengthen your lashes. Thanks! :)
