Mentalist Derren Brown does his impression of rainman by counting moving buttons on a tray in seconds.

That's indeed the trick. Very simple straight forward, when he's smacked in the face he can sneak a peek at the actual number.

My best guess. He asked her to cover the other buttons in the bowl. This would be so that the coin counter in the table would take a measurement while he used up time getting slapped, waiting for the final count to be made. Someone that knows the answer of the remaining buttons signals him, and voila.

This is a classical magic trick presented as a mental talent. Much of Brown's work is merely good presentation applied to tricks whic hahve been arounf since the turn of the 20th century.

The story he gives is that as a kid in school, he was bullied, and his classmates would tip his stuff on the floor, all over the place and whilst he was bending down to pick them up, they'd kick him and rough him up. Basically he says that he would count all his personal effects that had been tipped onto the floor to detract him from their blows, and from that, he learned how to count things super fast without a quick glance. And having a photographic memory would help. Sad story, really.

The simplest solution is for the small round table to be a weight-measuring device with a read-out concealed in the ornate carving. Knowing this weight, it is easy to calculate the number on the tray.

If I were doing this trick I'd 1) do the bowl/buttons/weight thing (note all the buttons were the same size) as suggested 2) make up an emotional cover story as distraction and misdirection Guess Derren did just that - but take nothing away from his being one of the finest performers ever

If you are taking a handful of these buttons and drop them on the tray it has a special sound. A handful of 25 buttons has another sound than 22, so if you have trained the trick for a while you will be able to hear the different sounds. What you also have trained, is that a normal size hand will automatic grasp a certain amount around maybe 22 - 25 buttons, thats why he should see her hands when she entered the stage, simply to measure them being normal size hands for a woman.

that may or may not be how its done, but he only looked at them for about 1/2 a second if not less, and thats very impressive no matter how its done

The tray with the buttons isn't placed on the table with the camera until after he has made his guess. Watch his video with where he can tell what card is missing from a deck just from fanning the cards, or memorizing the exact order of cards after fanning them twice, and you can see how he must have some amazing abilities. You have some intelligent thoughts, but they wouldn't apply to the cards the same way, leaving me with the impression he must truly have a gift for such things.

I think he's using his power of persuasion to make her slip up with the counting. So no matter how many buttons there actually are, because she's being rushed, she's accidentally miscounting and ending up with the number Derren is persuading her to count.

you are absolutely right. She is an accomplice. Deren gets a close count and she helps making it exact. @koldtoft : look closely or download the video. I had to watch it several time to see what is happening but two buttons (orange one) are stacked and she starts with two but ends with three

She is NOT an accomplice. YOU could be on stage instead of the lady in the video and he would still be able to do it. Keep in mind that Darren is a magician/mentalist. All of his effects are accomplished by natural means using illusionary techniques. What may look like great abilities or even psychic abilities, they are only effects created for entertainment purposes. It is the job of every magician and mentalist to create the illusion of magic and super mental abilities. Those abilities are illusions. So relax and enjoy the show. It's pure entertainment. There is a lot of time, and effort that goes into creating such illusions. So respect the performer for his patience and determination to put in the long hours of practice only to entertain, amuse, and amaze you. Psychic or super human abilities? NO! Long hours of practice and sacrifice to create perfect illusions for entertainment purposes...YES!

nice trick spoiler: like being said, the bowl has a weight and the total amount of buttons aswell, after she grabs the remaining weight stands for x buttons - the total, this count is whispered or given at an other way towards derren nicely done one, yet a classic :)

A man would normally grasp a bigger amount (because he has bigger hands). The reason why they are coloured, is so he can see very quickly, how many of a certain colour that has been taken, thats why he changed his mind about the amount.

I forgot to say that the woman took a extra button and drop it on the tray. He couldnt hear that, but Derren Brown will get the message through his earpiece from one of his staff, if something is going on he cant control.

PLEASE READ THE SECOND COMMENT FIRST 1-She is brought to believe that when experiencing fear, one can count like rainman. To make HER be rainman, Derren emphasizes on the tract that she has on stage (speaks fast, seems uncomfortable, slips words like "tract" while touching her shoulder - from distract at 0:53) and associating that feeling with pain (he says the word while firmly holding her shoulder). Now I'm not a specialist so I let you figure out the hypnosis techniques.

He has. There's one clip (forgot which one) where he has memorised the whole english dictionairy. He knows what word the other ment when that person said which page, coloumn and row it was on.

Notice too how he emphasizes "cover it up" (referring to the sheets). This suggests to her covering up the buttons with her hands as she is counting, which she does pretty consistently. That makes it hard to see how many she is really counting.

the trick has to do with colors. he knows exactly how many colored buttons there are and once he sees them he knows exactly how many are on the plate, that is why before she is done counting he knows the exact number.

@freestyleskierfasho this is what I think. I dont know how the trick is done, but notice how he asked the lady if he could look at her hands. He was probably looking at the size of her hands because each time time she grabbed a handful of buttons. He doesnt look at her, but he can hear how many times she reaches in and takes out buttons. He probably studied different hand sizes with how many buttons can be taken out in a single handful. Also he obviously knows how many buttons are in the bowl.

1. Memorise the ratio of colors (Colors should be distributed like this 3:4:5:6 i.e no large difference but not 1:1) 2. Count one color quickly 3. Use the ratio to predict number with high probability of accuracy

Thats because they know the weight of buttons in that bowl on the table, the one she takes them out of right? so when she takes out the buttons the weight in the bowl drops, by knowing how much it dropped by they can easily work out how many buttons she took out, easy :)

There is a scale on that fake table. They know the weight of each invidual buttons. He is given the number by a transmiter on his ear.

i think its because he has a great photographic memory, so he can quickly count them in his head when he closes his eyes. that or, a quick glance at the buttons, i think there were 6 dif colours of buttons, count say 11 reds multiply by 6 and u get 66. maybe?

There's a small electronic weight hidden under the bowl. Since each button weighs the same, the difference between the bowl's weight before and after the buttons are removed indicates the number of buttons clearly. Brown's associate backstage takes a reading of the weight using Bluetooth or other wireless communication device, then signals the result to Brown.

Just a quick follow-up. Note that he says there are "about a hundred" buttons total. Actually, there are *exactly* 100. That makes precentages easy to calculate. I will correct myself on one point, though. The black buttons make the best index color. If you freeze it, you can easily see 6 black buttons and maybe 7 red ones. In a split second, even an untrained person like me can tell the answer is between 60 and 70.

Impressive! My best guess is he's mentally leading her to miscount the chips to the correct number, though it's certainly not easy to tell from the video. I would have to slow it down to see if there was any sleight of hand (or sleight of count as the case may be).

He masks magic as psychology and suggestion, and occassionally vica-versa. He even says "I mix magic..." etc. at the start of the TV shows.

Lol, this is extremely simple. The buttons are divided into 7 colors. Statistically you will grab an equal amount of each color. All he does is remember the amount of 1 color and multiply it by 7. Later on, as he is watching, he can adjust for the statistical error. That's how it's done.

I am not a specialist neither did I read any book about it but my conclusions, wich could be wrong, are the following: Brown was fairly close when he guessed the number but by using a combination of techniques he lead Chris to 1-count very quickly and accurately. 2-cheat in order to get the number he guessed

I concur that weighing is the logical tool. Harbor Freight sells a scale that can be calibrated to count, for under $20. Ah, but then to have the results displayed somewhere else that he can observe. Still, some good technology. But technology none the less.

Yea, first you weigh all the buttons and find out how much it is, then you divide by the total amount of buttons to find the weight of one button. So then by knowing the weight of that bowl after she takes the buttons out of it, it is possible to calculate how many buttons are left, so they know how many she took ok? then when she slaps him notice he holds his cheek as though it hurt? thats cos he has a microphone hidden in his sleeve. Thats how he is told the amount of buttons from backstage

I would quess there are as many people backstage as there are colors available. Then, they all only count their own color, add it up and notify Derren through earpiece, or sign at the opposite side of the podium. He then stops and corrects his estimate. The initial estimate is probably based upon a scale underneath the bowl, they do a little math backstage and signal Derren in some way...

Photographic memory. In one episode in one of his series he memorized the entire Oxford Dictionary in 20mins using a slide show of images of each page. He memorized exactly where each word is on the page and whereabouts on that page it is, what words are above and below it etc etc.

Close.. but i think its more plausible to think that the scale was under the bowl. To say that there's a fixed weight on all the buttons (eg. 100g for 100 buttons), then when the lady picked it up.. just minus the total (100g) to the weight left (eg.24g), therefore.. 76g, which gives approx 76-77 buttons :)

I think he just looks for the dark purple ones, and multiplies and hopes to play the odds, i bet there is an equal amount of every color button, and his odds were a little of the first time which is why he changed the number, he started to count as soon as she put it on the table which is why he stalled.

Well, I have a short, short theorie of whats going on. I think he looks at her hands to see how big they are, then when he says cover it up he listens to how many handfulls are being put on the tray. He then takes a good average amount, most likely to be near the actual amount. Then we see's how many there really are, he counts them a bit faster (or maybe he gets help from his crew?) and he says another estimate. This estimate is of cours right to the last little button.

How it's done.. 1. There is a very presice scale in the table with the coins on, and they know the weight of every coin. (properly they weigh something fixed like 2-3 grams a pice) 2. When she slap him (and the reason she slap him) he moves his hand to his ear and someone from outside tell him how many is missing. (or it could be a monitor down his sleave) 3. The wrong guess and all the rest is just rassle dazzel to desiguse the obvious. Ps. Derren Brown is a geuines.. Read his book.

He doesn't need to count'em all. There are several different colors. He knows in advance how many of each color there are. He uses the red buttons as a "percentage index." If there are 10 total red buttons, and he sees 6 in his mental picture, then he guesses that about 60% of the buttons were grabbed. He does the same with the yellow and maybe the pink, then averages the results. Laws of probability say he'll be damn close. All this happens in a few seconds while he is verbally misdirecting.

he does this by counting them. I can easily count things by two's, but derren has trained to count things by 10's, or even perhaps 20's. Derrens not a fraud, he's intelligent.

The colour of the buttons aided in his recognition of the patterns presented on the tray. Hearing the sound of the buttons is also a part of recognition of patterns. Added to some psychological tricks, how is this not training of the right brain unless this performance is 100% rigged?

Yes, but Brown has some amazing photographic memory skills. If you watch the Derren Brown-Photographic memory, or the Blackjack one, hes explains how he remembers things. Now, wither or not that is actually how he does it I don't know, but from what I've seen, that's my assumption.

You guys may be on to something but how does he then do the card memory thing? Just riffles through the deck in like 5secs then says all the cards in order (AFTER somebody ELSE shuffles)... I get many of the things he does but even so it's still pretty amazing

ya know if Derren just throws in some wrong numbers to wow the audience. Think about it. If he got it bang straight off, then they would know that it's magic, which is illusion based on trickery & misdirection. I think it also has to do with the colours of the buttons. He can easily pick one apart from the other. so all he has to do is estimate the number of one group of coloured buttons and compared them with the other colours. This is just a guess tho =p don't assault me if I'm wrong.

maybe a balance calculate the weight of the ball after and before the woman take out some of the objects inside. That could be the solution.

2- stop the video at 3:21 when Derren makes the lady stop counting, therefore giving her some time to count how many chips are left. The current count is 50, so he needs 16 more chips to pair his guess of 66. There are 15 chips left on the table. Count again, that's right, 15. By making her slap him, he is convincing her to brake a rule when she has an opportunity to. She will do it when she has to count and has the opportunity to do it (and quite well I have to say)
