That's a Ludwig Octa-plus. I would love to have heard some of those Neil Peart style accents on the high toms, but it was a different time, and every drummer has his own style. An awesome performance by masters of their trade.

These guys are all Professional's Professionals - they are the musicians brought into the Recording Studio when the ''Rock Stars" can't play the tunes right. Rick Derringer was brought into the Recording Studio by KISS at the height of their fame in the late 1970's, because Ace Frehley couldn't perform a guitar solo as it was written in the song. After hours of Ace messing up and costing expensive Studio time, they brought in Rick, who nailed the solo in one take and was out the door in less than an hour. A Pro's Pro.

@Eric The KISS box set details that Rick Derringer played on "Larger Than Life." However, Rick's official discography omits this alleged contribution Also according to Google - Rick Derringer was brought in to record a solo that Vinnie Vincent couldn't get right for the song 'Exciter' of the LICK IT UP album. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lick_It_Up

Winters was older than Rick by a few years, that's why it was written in the tabloids that Derringer was Winter's protege!! As far as their talents go, Winter's was more like a Savant than Rick, because of his affliction probably !?!@@MrMojabo

That's one helluva a guitar Rick is playing, and it's kind of weird that Bogert is playing a headless bass, which is kind of minimal. Saw Rick play live once and was blown away. Very inspiring but not in the 'I'm going home now and playing the shit out my axe' way. In a way that has you wanting to stop playing altogether. He was that good, Hendrix level good.

@@prickrick I have to support 69zenos 1 here. Beck was more clever, musically imaginative and just tastier than Derringer. If you have a guitar player like Derringer in a power trio his style wears off after a while and it gets boring. And that´s something Jeff Beck was always able to avoid.
