Today I will be taking a look at both sets of 72 Inktense Pencils and Blocks. These have matching colours and numbers (except for Turquoise which is only in the blocks). I will swatch them out in my Big Book of Color Charts, and then I will draw a picture with the pencils on Inktense Paper. Check out my previous video where I reviewed both the Lightfast and Inktense paper pads: • Derwent Lightfast and ...
Derwent charts with lightfastness information, sets and colour names etc.

My favorite thing to do with my inktense pencils is to draw with them like with colored pencils and then spray the painting with a fine mist. The color explodes and spreads out in the most beautiful way. None of my other watercolor pencils do that.

My mumsie just ordered me the full 72 set of Inktense pencils when I explained to her what people use them for, and it was on sale for Amazon US so that was even better! I can't wait to get stuck into these. I love inks- I have acrylic ink, and Bombay India Inks as well. It's so fun, the effects one can get with Inks is so unique and fun.

Beautiful Tulips! The blocks are great for large wash areas. Hence the tray areas by the blocks. If the dry dye is not completely dissolved it will move so that is the problem some people have that say it moves after drying. I cut thin strips of wc paper on the lip of the tray next to the blocks and glued it on and made color swatch and wrote number so i can see it when using. When using the blocks i keep them in the tray and put a brush to them to pick up pigment. To tone down those vibrant greens add a little red to make it more earthly. I love my pencils and blocks.

Great ideas, thank you for the helpful tips. I like the strips of paper, I think I'll need to do this. It's definitely a lot cleaner leaving the blocks in the tray, haha! I was pulling them out a few at a time because it was easier to fit them on camera :-)

I have too, have the full set of blocks and pencils. I know soo many people get hung up on the permanent factor, and while they do not move and lift as much or as easily as watercolor, they will move and lift a little on some papers and surfaces than others. Inktense dry matte unlike watercolor and photograph very well. Unlike watercolor, you can use inktense on other surfaces such as wood, uncoated tile and fabric and they are much more permanent on wood, tile and fabric than they seem to be on some paper. Inktense mix very well and you can make as many colors as you can imagine. The white block is VERY opaque when dry, initially when you lay it down you will think nothing is happening..but wait for it to dry and you will be amazed. The pencil works differently and is not as opaque. Inktense are a lot of fun and possibilities are endless...keep experimenting and have fun!!
@BeckyTregear

Thank you! Ah yes, I have since discovered that the white does indeed dry much more opaque than I first thought, so that's a win! I still want to try them on fabric to see what they're like.

The pencils can be shaved and the shavings mixed with water to use as paint. An option for people who don’t have the blocks. Also, using the pencils on very wet paper will not result in the pencils texture lines that you seem to dislike.

Most of the inktense are lightfast according to the official derwent website current chart, however there are older charts that have derwent branding circulating on the Internet that gives them low lightfast ratings.

I love my Inktense pencils and wish I had the turquoise on a pencil. It's such a pretty colour and I think a lot of us would prefer it to the Outliner. I wonder why they chose to do that. Generally anyone who spends this much on pencils will already have an outline type pencil, as these aren't beginner supplies. I saw a video yesterday with someone who got a 24 set and she still got that pencil and was disappointed. I haven't used my Inktense for a couple of months and want to get back to them soon.

Very useful video :) I find I have the same problem if I try to use watercolor pencils on cold pressed paper, it’s just too textured and frustrates me. It’s nice to see the color range of these and I love that you use so many bright colors in your artwork, that botanical piece came out gorgeous! The blocks seem as messy as pastel sticks😂 I’m still kicking myself for forgetting to buy some inktense pencils open stock to try them out, but another time will come😂 the ability to be able to layer without worrying about lifting up color seems great!

Cold pressed paper just doesn't feel right with pencils! You'll definitely have to try some of the pencils, and they're easy to get (at least here they are). I really enjoy using them, but the blocks are definitely pastel-level messy!

I never thought about the outliner not beeing in the block set. Good spotting! The shave and save I am quite sure was originally made for their now discontinued triangular Artbars. But they work for the Inktence too. You can get one with a grater on top too. I got both, never use either really. You can give the pages a coat of transparent gesso first, if you need to swatch more waterdissolvables in that book. -Colourist tip. :D
@BeckyTregear

I forgot about the artbars! I will probably try using gesso on another page because that paper just carked it immediately when water was added, lol.

@@BeckyTregear Oh I know how that paper is like with water. :D It was one of the things that annoyed me with colouring. Colourists are amazing at working with crappy paper. There is also Schminckes watercolour ground that works quite well, but I thought it was more likely that you already got gesso in your stash, and/or would find it useful to have. The watercolour ground is smoother though.

I see on the inktense pencil chart pdf there is a 1215 but it's named mineral blue not turquoise. I really like the intensity of the color in these pencils once they're wet, compared to normal watercolor pencils. I'd like to buy a few watercolor pencils and might end up with these instead. I don't want a big set though. I'd prefer to just buy a few colors that I really like and I can pick the more lightfast ones that way. I find too many choices overwhelming so big sets are wasted on me because I just use my favorites and ignore the rest 😄 The other pencils that interest me are the graphitints so I'm off to watch your video on those now
@BeckyTregear
@BeckyTregear 6 ай бұрын
Choosing the most lightfast colours is a great idea! A lot of these aren't, so it's a little hit and miss as to which are going to last the longest. Graphitints from what I've heard from other people don't hold their lightfastness for long and the colours may fade, leaving only the graphite. I haven't had any issues myself, but it's worth noting that.
@zenlife1200

@@BeckyTregear If you could only have one brand of watercolor pencil which would you pick? I'm now watching your Caran d'Ache video lol. The price doesn't matter so much if I can buy the pencils separately, so it gives me more options in the expensive brands.

I've never tried any inktense media or anything like it, so this may be a dumb question....but since from what I gather of how they work...(you wet it, then paint with it, and let it dry down and then it's basically unmoveable and unable to be reactivated with water)....if you use the water directly on the block and then when your done, let that block dry...would that mess up the block or give you issues of being able to reuse that technique and get pigment from it again from the spot that dried down from the previous use, sense your only supposed to be able to activate it just once?
@BeckyTregear

That is a very interesting question and not one I had even thought about! I've wet and rewet the blocks, it doesn't seem to be affecting them. I might need to do some more research on that! Really great question, thank you!

@@MoonSpinners Hi there! Sorry for taking a while to get back to you, but I actually did some testing and I found with mine that while they were mostly permanent, some of the colour did indeed lift off, though I did need to scrub it quite a lot with my brush. They definitely weren't completely permanent! But factors which could possible affect this include me testing them about 15 minutes after they were dry, and also the type of paper used (celluose lifts way more easily than cotton). They possibly would become more permanent over many hours/days, but I haven't had a chance to do this yet. I also found some other differences between the blocks and the paint pan set, so I have a feeling this is going to end up being an entire video on its own, comparing all of the inktense products, lol! I hope this helps for now though. Mostly difficult to lift off paper, but not impossible.
@MoonSpinners
@MoonSpinners 2 жыл бұрын
@@BeckyTregear ..thank you sooo much for replying, this has actually helped enormously. I think you’re right, the paper is a definite factor. I’ve been using mine on cheap paper and they lift days after drying just like watercolour, but I’ve tried them on 100% cotton paper and though it’s harder to lift, but mine still do. I would love to see a whole video on this topic. I bought the inktense blocks deliberately so there’s no scratchy lines of undesolved pigment left behind, but it’s been a terrible disappointment. I contacted Derwent, who said they’d ask their lab experts, but they’ve not got back to me. If it turns out that you can only use them on the super expensive paper like Arches, then I’ll never use them again 😕 thanks again for your time. 👍🇬🇧
