In this review we take a look at the gorgeous Derwent Tinted Charcoal Pencils, I am no Charcoal artist, however I admire the work charcoal artists create. There is something that looks so free and expressive to me when I watch a charcoal artist, apply what starts out looking like coal dust to a sheet of paper, for it to transform into some of the most amazing art I have ever seen. I have watched charcoal artists create work that provides light and shadow just as any watercolor painting would all with what appears to the untrained eye, dirt.
The Derwent Tinted Charcoal Pencils are really quite beautiful in their own subtle way. For this review I have only provided this video review and my written review. I have not provided a speed drawing or still images to The Art Gear Guide and when you watch the video you will understand why.

Good evening. I have these and I do love them. I wish there were just a 'little' more color difference in them, as they are (as you said) very subtle. That being said, I enjoyed using them. I do like soft pastels of all kinds, and I find that because I tend to do more detailed drawings there is not much dust at all. If I did larger or broader strokes, there probably would be. Paper would make a differene, too. I haven't used water with them, as it has been several months since I worked with them. (I work in many mediums). But I am glad they are in my supply cabinet and they have a nice look to them. I drew a caribou buck on black watercolor paper using them and it really came out nice. Very dramatic. Thanks so much for the review. I will have to try them with water. I am sure that using different paper will make a difference, too.

The rain in the background is really nice, but i must be biased because i love to draw when it’s raining outside! Fits the moody palette of the tinted charcoals aswell

Hulo Harry, I thing you might be being a bit hard on yourself and your artistic prowess! You went right to the tinted paper and this is the number 1 recommendation I give to beginners starting out. Work on a toned paper grey or tan will give you your middle tones and make creating a composition that is balanced and easier to complete in the end! I offer this as well; I sharpened my pencils by rotating the pencil for many years, I went to a weekend art retreat and I was told I was doing it wrong! The instructor told me to rotate the sharpener and hold the pencil still, it worked better! especially with pastel pencils and my Prismacolor pencils are lasting longer with fewer breakages too! I am still discovering soft pastels and that includes pencils, I know that no matter how soft or hard a pastel is, you need to start by blocking in your big areas. I believe that with these pencils you can fill in big areas with your water or alcohol it should work quite well. Just bringing that delicate color out of the pencils scrawl is a treat. Thanks for your review, I like the Derwent Graphitint pans, but have not gotten the pencils, I just do not use them enough. I know you hold yourself to a high level, yet I wish to say relax and give yourself a break. I am re-discovering JOY in creating my Artwork. I worked for over 30 years as a freelance Artist. I did ever job you can think of from Little League Portraits, Pet Portrait Drawings and Paintings to gluing seeds on a Rose Parade float! I have been forced to slow down and I no longer take on clients and I am making Art I can love again. I know there is pressure to make videos and create films of creating your pieces of Art. Hi Harry! Finally a review of this Derwent Tinted Charcoal pencils! It will be nice to try it, because I love to work with soft pastels, and for me, it will be a good medium to try. And, I wish Derwent had added more light and vibrant colors to this sets. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I really enjoy the Derwent tinted charcoal especially since they are matte as opposed to graphite. The 2 greens are very similar but that’s ok. I add in the Conte few that include 3 reds and the light, medium and dark charcoal. I enjoy the pencil ones but only occasionally add a lighter Derwent light green tinted graphite. I enjoy sketching with them, sometimes a bit of a wash is fine but the Contes aren’t as movable. It teaches the importance of learning values and reinforces sketching techniques. They are wonderful to slide into a roll up pencil or brush carrier with a sketchbook. Architectural studies, trees, animals and anything make these a bunch of fun. Thank you for explaining the difference and giving suggestions with the pencils such as using tinted paper or sketchbooks. Hahnemule has some great tinted paper in their sketchbooks. 😊

Hi Harry. I bought a couple of open stock green colours and I couldn’t tell the difference between them! The colours are a little too subtle for me. I’d love to see a review of the XL graphite and XL charcoal, those look really fun. I like the sound of the rain in the background, very soothing lol

Yeah the blocks look like they have a bit more Color in them, I’ll definitely give them a go and review them, do a little comparison maybe of the same pencil colors that are in the block set. Thank you for watching and your support

I find many of Derwent colors to be too similar. I do appreciate the more natural, muted colors that most of the pallets have but yeah, have scratched my head sometimes with the similarities between one color to the next. After watching the water swatches, yeah whoa too similar and way too subtle.

Thank you, Harry! Other possible use: In pastel, it is important to have very dark colors, colored blacks. So I use Tinted Charcoals like very dark pastel pencils. :) (Translated by a search engine.)

Hi Thanks for your great review. I use Derwent Colouring and Artist pencils. Watched a review and the poster/artist said to not turn the pencil in the sharpener, but to turn the sharpener around the pencil. And sure enough you get a much sharper point and no breakages, as yet.

I like the Faber-Castell sharpener with 3 holes and has a hinge and shavings container on both sides, it works for these inktense and Magnus and the brutfuner squares pretty well and I couldn’t get any of my other sharpeners to work for these particular pencils

Hello Harry, I was watching Jennifer Stay at Coloring Bliss on youtube and she used her finger to smudge the color which was beautiful! I just purchased these and think I will use a tortillon or my finger rather than water. Love the video!

Hi Cheryl, I definitely don’t like using water with them the only problem with using your finger, and this very much depends on the surface you are using, but the oils from your hands can sometimes effect the layering and leave marks on the paper that can’t be removed. Paper such as Mixed Media or Ingres, however, if you are using a much more corse surface such as Lux Archival, UART or Pastelmat, you wont have those problems. You can also buy really inexpensive sponges or a lot of people use make-up sponges which from what I can gather are the same material. PAper blending Stumps are good as well, there are loads of options for blending, just whatever you find best for you

Charcoal is naturally oily, so if anything it's water-repellent not water soluble. That's why it isn't surprising that it won't completely dissolve when water is applied. Personally I love the tinted charcoal collection, both in pans and in pencils.

I am no artist but q think because of the charcoal added to a tint, or a tint added to charcoal, putting the medium down thickly would wash out the color. It would be overwhelmed by the charcoal. You did not put it on thick when relating to pastels but I would be tempted to try the test again using a very very light touch. I am thinking that by doing that you might see not smoky colors rather than trying to find color in the charcoal. That medium wound be fantastic for a multicolored desert scene in a low light setting or possibly any scene in low light. How does it behave after it has been wet and then had time to fully dry? Is it permanent like the ink tense? Or can it be reactivated with water? Great video!!! I could have some fun with those pencils! Imagine doing a ruin with them and maybe just a hint of intense where the sun touches parts of the setting! Great great video!!! Thank you!

I have only tried the white tinted charcoal for Sketching on dark colours backgrounds on canvas for acrylic. I do wish they came in more colours such as. Yellow, orange, red and pink. I guess the charcoal Dulls down the colour saturation of the colours

ii find using a base with inktense intensifies colors and doesn't move when using wet mediums.

I've tried a couple of times with Gambol OMS on colored pencils and it didn't work well for me and from what you showed with charcoal it's about the same result.

With regards to OMS on Colored pencils, you may not be applying enough layers. People think they apply a layer and then use the OMS, you won’t see any results like this. You need to apply at least 4 or 5 light layers and then apply OMS. After the OMS has dried, it will rejuvenate the tooth of the paper allowing you to apply a few more layers, creating real depth to the area. You can use your OMS on the second lot of layers, let it dry and the. Apply your final one or two layers. If you try it like this, you will see quite a change in your results. Make sure the layers are light layers.

This was a very interesting video i find charcoal interesting also a bit messy for me but still pretty interesting i think someday in the far future i might have enough money to purschase this set and experiment these pencils....but its gonna be years before that can happen cause id have to take classes on this supply of art then id have to probably buy certain paper maybe a fixadent to sel art work in but i think these colors charcoal pencils are simply lovely and I would purschase these in future after i could buy the lightfastness pencils first or color artist pencil....or the pastel pans they company derwent has in set.i do like the texture you get from adding water to these pencils..mikelle art mom🎨✍👩‍🎨

I've never used charcoal or charcoal pencils. But most of those colours all look so close to black. Do the underlying colours come through when you smear the swatches with a finger?

Por ser un material novedoso, anunciarse como carboncillos de colores y con unos nombres tan poéticos, creo que pueden confundir un poco. En realidad, son simplemente lápices carbón con un ligero matiz. Y dicho esto, a mí me gustan bastante. Hay tonos que no se diferencian a simple vista, pero cuando se combinan sí que se aprecia cierto contraste y proporcionan al dibujo una mayor intensidad. Al ser carboncillo, prefiero esos tonos apagados, casi negros. Para colores brillantes ya tenemos los lápices pastel. Coincido en que no están hechos para aplicarles agua, salvo que se busque un efecto muy específico. Las minas son muy frágiles y se rompen con la mayoría de afilalápices, incluso con el cuchillo. Sin embargo, probé el sacapuntas Derwent y a mí es lo que mejor resultado me ha dado. También estoy de acuerdo en que el lápiz carbón es un medio difícil y no demasiado popular, pero si te gusta, estos lápices te van a encantar. Debo aclarar que soy una simple aficionada y por tanto no puedo dar una opinión profesional.

??? los nombres son iguales a los de cualquier lapiz de color promedio lol, desde unos crayola hasta los caran d'ache. pero quizas te parecen poeticos por que no estas familiarizada con los sinonimos en ingles? no lo se. en todo caso la marca en si, derwent, es asi de "confundir" con sus materiales, porque tienen mas lineas de las necesarias en cuanto a lapices (derwent drawing, derwent lightfast, derwent softcolour, derwent procolour, derwent artists, derwent tinted charcoal, derwent inktese, y seguro estoy olvidandome de alguna), e ironicamente ninguna de ellas clasifica de profesional sin ningun pero, excepto los derwent lightfast (e ironicamente los que tienen "pro" en el nombre, tienen peor resistencia a la luz que los softcolour)

@@magical571 Tienes razón en que mi nivel de inglés no es muy bueno, pero tengo bastantes materiales de distintas marcas en gamas de hasta 120 colores y lo de "Heather Mist" o "Driftwood" solo lo he encontrado en estos lápices 😅. Lo de la confusión lo comento también porque he visto reseñas y tutoriales, incluso de artistas profesionales, que tienden a utilizarlos más como pasteles que como carboncillos. El vídeo de The Art Gear Guide, excelente, como siempre.
