I just purchased 2 packs of the inktense pencils and 2 packs of the inktense blocks on ebay. (I paid less than $20 for all 4, Great deal) I have been wondering exactly what to do with the blocks. I bought them to use in my art journaling. This tutorial was very helpful. Thanks for posting. You were a pleasure to watch. :)

If the ink that is dried on the paper is permanent and can't be reblended, but can be layered... Does this mean that when you wet the block or pencil directly, when that part of the block or pencil dries it will have a fine layer of unblendable residue on it? Is this noticeable when you next use the blocks or pencils? Should you give the pencils a light sharpen before use if you've wet the point?

I just got the Inktense Blocks and I had the Inktense Pencils for a long time. Well the blocks are so much more opaque then the pencils, when I take the color pigment off of the tip of the pencil particularly the darker colors with a wet brush they just lays down much more smoother than the blocks, The blocks tends to get grainy especially when you don’t use enough much water. I think the pencils are made a little different from the blocks the pencils must be wax based because if I touch the tip of the pencil with my finger I get no color pigment on my fingers tips.

@@derwent I was a little disappointed with the blocks. I think the best way to use the blocks to get a nice good smooth texture is to add some water in a palette then put the color pigment in the water that way you get a nice good smooth texture but the colors won't be as bright and vibrant. I think it would be nice if the blocks were semi moist.

Hi @donnamcneil6748, it is essential that all the pigment has been diluted or else the wash will not be permanent. The important thing to remember is that it needs to be a light wash. Hope this helps. Best, Derwent

This tutorial was amazing - WOW!!! I just love these Derwent blocks, they're incredible. Sorry about all the gushing over these, you did a great job of showing us how to use them and your painting with the buildings, where you used that purple colour to fill in the sky is so gorgeous. Just like the name says! Do you ever use the Derwent Inktense Pencils with the blocks? I saw another video where the artist used both, but, from the look of your painting, it doesn't seem that necessary, because you've drawn in the details with the blocks alone. Thank you for all the tips and tricks. Oh, BTW, can you use these blocks on fabric, like you can with the Inktense Pencils? Love from Amanda inside Melbourne, Australia ❤❤❤

Ok so I bought the pencils and a small set of blocks after watching numerous videos and knew I would love this product. I tried the small set of blocks and loved it so I went and bought the set of 36 blocks and man was this disappointing. I think there’s definitely an issue with this set, comparing the same colors from the small set the colors are definitely not vibrant as the small set of blocks. As for the drying permanent, this seems to be an issue as the colors definitely lift even after leaving it to dry overnight to make sure it’s dry. Sadly I sent a few emails to derwent explaining the problem I have and am yet to receive an answer. Has anyone else experienced this?
@derwent
@derwent 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mickey, thank you for your comment. There could be a slight variation in the colours between the two formulations - pencils and blocks, but they should be very similar. Are you saying that the colours that you have in the 12 tin that are also in the 36 tin have inconsistencies? It could be to do with being from different batches but the colours should still be the same. In regards to the permanence, the pigment needs to be fully dissolved then left to completely dry for it not to move. Hope this helps! Best, Derwent

@@derwent Hi. Thx so much for getting back to me. I’ve sent 3 emails directly to derwent and had no reply. I bought the pencils and blocks to use together. I love the colours. But I only bought a small set of 12 blocks initially. Because I liked to colour so much I bought the set of 36 blocks. The colours from the tin of 12 and the tin of 36 blocks are definitely not similar. Colour are much less vibrant in the bigger set. I use watercolor paper 300 gsm and watercolor brushes. I’m so sad and disappointed about this. I’m not sure why this is happening. I treat both sets the same and have very different results. Like I said earlier, I watched so many videos to make sure I use it correctly. If you like I can do a swatch of the colours tomorrow and send it to you. I saw how Lisa went with pencils over the blocks once dry. No movement. I did it and the colour lifts like even takes the colour away almost to the white of the paper again. Thx again and looking forward to solving this mystery.

@derwent
@derwent 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Heather, Sorry to hear that.The really important thing with Inktense is to make sure the pigment is 100% dissolved in water when you apply it to the paper. Once dried it will then be permanent. Let me know how you get on.

@derwent
@derwent 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Heather, The essential thing with Inktense is that the pigment is completely dissolved in water. Once this dries it will form a permanent layer on which you can do other layers. You can use a water spray or brush to mix it and then leave to dry. I would do some test blocks on a piece of paper first. Hope that helps. It's a great product and you can achieve some really neat effects!

@@derwent They were re- delivered. They were not only dirty ( I cleaned them all, & the tray before using ), which again caused a mixture of colours again with swatching but, one was split. I have kept them, was very disappointed! And, won‘t recommend them for purchase. I‘ve purchased Derwent watercolour pencils, & use them & recommended them, I use & recommend Schmincke Aquarell paints, & Hahnemuehle Aquarell paper. Was hoping to purchase Derwent Inktense watercolour pencils, will leave that now & purchase CaranD’Ache. And, hoped to purchase the XL Inktense blocks but, won’t now to avoid disappointment! As a solution:? Is it possible that the plastic cover that seals the Inktense blocks attracts static dust( small colour molecules from blocks ) that settles in the trays & during storage/ delivery travels & settles on the blocks, could a thin paper coat prevent this? This problem must be solvable. Such a shame, especially if like me, the purchaser was waiting expectantly for them, then disappointed!

I also think it would benefit the sale of your product if you had someone who demonstrated properly how to use these and not how a 5 year old would.
