Have you ever checked the live version with Joe Henderson with Jobim himself? Or the Stan Getz/Joao Gilberto version? These versions are in fact pretty different from the one you played and as have done many others who trusted the RealBooks without listening themselves (as I have done for many years) They have a lot of harmonic nuance which is lost in all the Real Books, old or new. And also some surprising little melodic twists which are regularly ignored in the common practice. I recommend you check that out. It is such a great tune.

Thanks for your insights, Rainer! Yes, I love those versions and everyone should check them out. I'm generally staying close to the Real Book versions of because this is most jazz musicians entry point into the repertoire nowadays and I want to help them get started. There's good and unfortunate aspects of using a fakebook such as the Real Book. You raise an important point!

I think the first part of the Amaj section is often played wrong.. (when the lyric “que isto bossa nova, que isto muito natural”) the chord used in this part is Amaj-Ab7b13-G7add13-Gb7 originally. The melody is different too. This part is often ‘simplified’ and taken to be the same as the second part which the chord is Amaj-Bbdim-Bm. Maybe you want to re-listen the recording either by Jobim or João Gilberto to clarify this and correct me if I’m wrong here. Great tutorial video, though!

Good points! A lot of times I've kept to the Real Book chord changes because most viewers are using this book at home. It's not a perfect system, so thanks for mentioning this!

@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 I'm just glad you are using the 'legal' 6th edition book that shows the corrected form. It's sad when we hear bands playing according to the original 'illegal' RB 5th edition that missed these 4 bars altogether.
