Join George and John as they discuss and debate different Philosophical ideas, today they will be continuing the discussion on Descartes Meditations on First Philosophy and looking into the second mediation entitled “Of the Nature of the Human Mind; and that it is more easily known than the Body.”
Descartes finished the first Mediation in a state of universal doubt, where he doubted the reliability of the senses and all the knowledge gained from the senses. From this Descartes then doubted the existence of the physical world along with his physical body. Now Descartes questions where he should doubt the existence of himself, should he doubt that he is a living being.
The questions that will be examined, what we do we mean by saying we exist? Is there a distinction between body and mind? Should the senses play a role in attaining knowledge or should all knowledge derive from the mind.

Terrific. Thank you. I have always thought of the mind and body as distinct though not separate. As for the spirit, it is distinct again, being the very essence of life in us. The soul is our experience of selfhood. The mind, as Descartes worked out, is concerned with out thoughts.

When the wax lose its shape, smell and size that I perceive bh sense to another shape, size which too I perceive by sense but there remains to me an understanding that 'it is the same wax,' however, that understanding is made by the first size, shape and smell which I had of the wax before any changes, which too is an understanding I perceive of from the senses, that then I wouldn't know and thus would understand the wax from the first place without!

But the problem with Descartes idea is that it assumes what it sets out to prove. Why do we just assume that we exist and how can you prove it? How do we know we aren't a dream or figment.

Descartes is confusing Thought vs. Thinking. Humans have defined the two words to be the same definition, they aren't - meditation is one example of proving this, where we lose thinking and "just be" of thought - where existing is easier. Humans do not need to think in order to exist, however exist because they are thought. One step further - it is the fact humans use (words) to define, to find reasoning, meaning, purpose that is ironically the "evil monster" which we are warned of - and because we define the word "nothing" as meaning non-existence, we feel we have to be some thing in order to exist. We set ourselves up for confusion, all while believing that communication through words is the ultimate intelligence. This is an example of "thinking", in inventing words then relying on them 1000 percent to describe, feel, sense, experience, our existence instead of "just being" - the evil monster which sets illusions through the fear of not trusting self is choosing thinking over thought (thinking is ego), thus humans trust thinking first, and through this must be a "thing" instead of self. @jbuckingham123 jamiebuckingham_official where I speak about existence, self, and One Consciousness wisdom.
