Many of you are familiar with ancestry or pedigree based research where you identify the parents and the grandparents and the great-grandparents and so on back through time. But, you could also do descendancy research - identifying the children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren of your ancestors. Hi Crista - just wanted to say I have been using Ancestry.com.au (Australia) for about a year and have been able to find some interesting facts about people i am desended from who i had no previous knowledge of. I enjoy your tutorials for the precise information you provide and with regards to this tutorial i will be making further enquiries to my Great Grandfather through sites such as the Public Records listings on Ancestry website. Keep up the good work I am sure there are many others who find your tutorial as informative as i do. I would look forward to watching or being directed to a tutorial about Irish Ancestors from before the 20th Century in the future if possible.

Crista, you have inspired me to do this too. I have several large volumes of my family's Amish and Mennonite genealogies. They mostly contain names, dates, religious affilliation and the job of the husband. Right now I am in the process of putting them ALL together into one tree on ancestry.com and recently purchased FTM 2014 which the more I learn how to use it, the more I love it. Like you, my cut off was the spouse of my blood relative, but I'm wondering now if I should go back and add the inlaws as well because of all the inter marriage that still goes on even to this day. I believe my uncle inherited most, if not all of my grandparents' family genealogy books, which I HOPE he let's me borrow and add to the tree. I still have a very long way to go to get all my books, and notebooks, etc. gone through and entered into my database, then I want to get a paid subscription to the website so I can run down all the records. I am having a blast and it's ALL YOUR FAULT! THANK YOU FOR INSPIRING ME TO GET STARTED ON IT AGAIN! I would love to see you do an episode with tips and tricks for people with Amish and Mennonite ancestry. ALSO, I had my DNA tested recently too and had a few shockers as well. I used to say I'm full blooded Amish on both sides. I found out I am also 14% Italian and Greek and 5% Irish with several trace regions. Again, THANK YOU for the videos, THANK YOU for all the great tips, tricks and advice, and most of all, THANK YOU for the inspiration I needed to get back on it!

I've discovered through my own descendancy research that I have a Welsh 3rd cousin who's a singer-songwriter. I would never have imagined something like that!

You talk about transcribing your results. What all do you include and where are you putting it.

If you have a particular County in mind, simply ask the Election Supervisor(s) for the current list of Registered Voters. It's a matter of Public Record.

Hi Christa, u showed on the obit collection that the obits it they had images u could view therm... I just browsed the US Obit Collection, but when all the record matches came up, none of the had images... is there a problem?

Crista, I do not have FTM. If I work on doing descendancy research, is there a way to print out a record of descendancy like tprinting out a family tree?

I realize this is an old video but right when you started about the 1940 census I instantly whipped by head up. 1940's has been the most frustrating time period for me to find reports. I've been complaining up and down to everyone for the last two years about anything involving the 1940's xD It's like everyone just falls away from the earth.

Hope this information was helpful for you. There are plenty of ways to continue your research post-1940 (newspapers, city directories, obituaries, etc.).

I went to the current card catalog and typed obituary and didn't find this. I then typed the exact name United States Obituary Collection and got results. Has this database been taken down?

The U.S. Obituary Collection has been renamed slightly. You can still find it in the card catalog by typing in Obituary and sorting by Record Count. Or you can access it directly here: search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=7545

I love the idea of using placeholder images for "never married" Etc,, but please, if you are going to use them in your Family Tree Maker, mark that media item private by checking the box under the image. That way when you upload to Ancestry our hints don't fill up with those images.

You will only get a hint to that image, if that person is also in your tree. And, wouldn't you want to know that about a person?

This genealogy research is very interesting. Some people are very organized in doing their research, and their results are going to be much more comprehensive compare to other people that are barely trying to obtain basic information and do not care about adding comments to their research.

I have walked it back with my last name Wetherington, to 14century England, those people were all Nobels and its shocked me.. I really don't know what to think of it, or how it all fits yet.. they were all in Nortumberland... I need help in getting it all organised but limited on cash...

Since 2020 is a census year, the 1950 census names will be available in two years. So, be patient.

How do I find where a person is buried? We found my 2nd Great Grandpas death certificate but it doesn't state where he was buried. He isn't buried back in the islands with his wife. He left samoa, and traveled to Hawaii and passed away there. I've already searched findagrave.com How else can search for his burial?

I would search for his obituary, that may state where he was interred. Since you know where he died, you can quickly narrow down the newspapers to search. Also, it could be worth an online search of local cemeteries to that area. It is not unusual to find indices of cemeteries posted by local historical societies or the cemetery office itself, records which are often not yet on find-a-grave.

Dixon is right. Obituary is a good place to check out specially since you know DOD. I don't know if it'll help but try familysearch also. They might have something new that you could use in your search.

Oh and did you try using nicknames he might have went by on findagrave? It took me awhile to figure out my 3x grandma went by her nickname Hattie on her grave instead of Harrietta. Also maybe you can find maybe another family member in findagrave like a cousin,brother or aunt or uncle that has a small excerpt about him or a link. I also find that sometimes a distant relative is the only one that does have a link to my person instead of a closer family member.

That happens. With only a few families in certain areas, centuries ago, lots of intermarriage occurred.

Im done....i cant do this anymore...everytime i get closer to the info on my bio father.... I get discourage... Obviously there is a reason my mother. Doesn't want me to know!!! Im only going to hurt myself looking for family that don't want to know That... i exist
