This was a really great video. I am still learning how to use Family Search. I love the Fan Chart view. Now I understand that it can do way more than I understood. Thanks for this! 👍🏽

Another great Family Search Video. I tend to use tried and trusted Ancestry.com and Find My Past as they have fantastic local (to me) church records. I find family search to be incredibly confusing and complicated. Videos like this are making me think that I should perhaps dedicate some time to getting to grips with the way things work and how it can help me. After all, we all have an excess of time on our hands at this dreadful time. Stay Safe. Stay Well

Jean... go where the records are is always my first advice. However, there are some really cool features on each platform, so I hope you'll give FamilySearch a try. We have a lot of training videos on FamilySearch to help you out.

I've tracked down a 4th cousin for the specific reason to get them to take a Mitochodrial DNA test. They did and I was able to debunk 25+ years of bad research that claimed half of an ancestor's children were by one wife and the other half were by another wife. The female line descendant of one wife was a "Full Mitochodrial Sequence" match to a female line descendant of the supposed other wife who had tested years before. In other words only one wife as I assumed despite everyone else assuming different. It's also debunked the notion the now common wife was Choctaw Indian because her Haplotype is dominant in Ireland and Scotland. Science!

Cousins of your ancestors may be the ones who were prominent settlers of a certain area and have a very informative biography in a local county history.

Another reason to do descendency research is to help find people who can do DNA testing that follows straight-line descendency requirements (ie, Y-DNA testing needing testers who are male-only descendents from an early ancestor)

Yes!!!! I had that thought in my mind and forgot to say it. I think it was so you could leave this valuable comment.

You always want to track nieces and nephews of an ancestor in the 1700s and 1800s because you'll find them moving to the same areas. If you loose track of an ancestor they may have moved to the same place as nieces and nephews. You have to approach everything as a cluster of attached people. Researching people as if they lived in genealogical vacuum only sends you down bogus paths into brick walls.
