It's time for Desert Brutality 2021! This match is a bit different form previous Brutality matches; it required three guns: pistol, rifle, and precision rifle. I chose to enter the Cold War division (all guns dating form 1946-1991) using a couple of French classics: my FAMAS and new FR-F2. For a handgun, I considered a MAB P15, but decided instead to take a risk and use a Manurhin MR73 .357 Magnum revolver. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right? Well, let's see if that was a wise choice...

come to think of it, the only time either of those two obsolete legacy weapons would be highly effective is in a situation where you’ve severely outmaneuvered your enemy and have the drop on them so you only need a couple shots. While that’s ludicrously difficult with a rifle in combat, it seems pretty easy in a 2 AM gas station robbery

@genericpersonx333
@genericpersonx333 2 жыл бұрын
In fairness, a well-made revolver like the MR73 was still pretty much the most reliable and one of the most accurate pistols possible in 1973, which is why the French chose them for the elite operators. Unlike a bolt-action today where there is no matching even an average semiautomatic with the best bolt-action rifle, an MR73 can put six shots on target just as fast as the average semiautomatic. It is only after those first six shots that it looks inferior. The problem Ian had was that he didn't have the training the original users did. French GIGN put about 150 rounds a day through their MR73s precisely so they never missed. If he had gotten six hits with every load, Ian would have only been a little behind the 9mm high-capacity semiautomatics in actual time.
@derfurz8618
@derfurz8618 2 жыл бұрын
@@genericpersonx333 Yes it is more accurate than a tilting barrel pistol, but that doesn't matter on most applications even SF guys have with it. It's not like you shoot hundreds of meters with pistols. No a MR73 cannot put 6 shots on a target as fast as a pistol can, because you are shooting 357 vs 9mm and you have to cock the hammer after each shot. Ian's shooting was not what makes the MR73 obsolete. It doesn't matter how many shots he missed because with a Glock or a hipower he would have to reload once at best and be faster at that
@csipawpaw7921
@csipawpaw7921 2 жыл бұрын
I carried a revolver on duty for many years. I see two areas for improvement. 1. Your weapon has a reputation for a great double-action pull, use it. It is faster. 2. Get better speed loaders. The turn knob HKS style is cheaper but is also slow. Try the Safariland J-K2C COMP II or it's equivalent for your revolver. It does not rely on gravity to work. It pushes the rounds into the chambers. This means it is faster and you can load at angles an HKS can't. Just use the loader to hold the rounds in the chambers while you close the cylinder.

I noticed that too. His reloads on the first stage were impeded because he kept his left hand firing grip. No way to hold the cylinder open, and using the non-dexterous hand for the speed loader. On the second stage he used a technique closer to Massad Ayoob’s “stress reload” where he grabs the cylinder with his off hand. That’s what I do when I reload. A proper lefty reload with a revolver can be just as fast, if not faster, than a righty stress reload.

Ian, I want to give you credit for running the .357 for a match like this. My EDC is a compact, polymer-framed .357 (weighs in at 19oz unloaded), as I am frequently in the woods in Northern Wisconsin, with bears and wolves being fairly typical sightings (for city carry I do use .38+p handloads, but same gun, 158gr Hydrashocks are my lead of choice for both my .38 and .357 handloads). For this reason, I do a lot of shooting and speed drills with .357, and as your video demonstrates, speed loading with a revolver is a fair bit slower than even a slow reloading of an automatic. Add the absolute beating you will take shooting that many rounds of .357 rapidly with any size of revolver, and I fully appreciate the feat of endurance you are going through with your choice in handgun. You have my respect.

Kudos for sticking with the French firearm theme, and while I can appreciate how nice the Mathurins are, any revolver would give you issues. Single stack, 7 round 1911s would only be a tiny bit better. This is the kind of competition that almost requires double-stack, high capacity pistol magazines. But still, props for shooting through the competition with your loadout choice.

These matches are military cosplay _specifically_ designed to give people a reason to have an AR platform (or similar) along with a modern high-capacity side arm. When you deviate from those conditions then of course you're going to lose. By that same logic _of course_ he did well on the DMR stage. It was essentially designed for the FR-F2, just like the pistol stage was designed for a Glock.

It wasn't hits that were the problem, but only six shots. I used to shoot with some guys who were insane revolver fanatics. They could all make reliable hits, but in an 8 target plate run they were at a significant disadvantage to the semi-auto guys. Even when we gave them a two plate handicap so they could finish without reloading, they had to make every shot or they'd lose. That said, the ässhole with the Mateba autorevolver still came out in the top three most of the time. That thing was deadly, and he was a crack shot with anything. The rimfire class used rimfire silhouettes- seven rounds about the size of a half-dollar and a chicken. I've seen him clear it in around three seconds from 20 feet. I think it's also fair to say that what held him back the most was that he clearly didn't practice much with the weapon combo, the trigger issue is something you'd notice and account for fairly quickly once it was made obvious by some time practicing going from one gun to another. Certainly the combo of fantastic DMR/sniper rifle, a fantastic but unnecessarily powerful revolver and a great assault rifle with a less great trigger isn't an optimal impromptu combination of weapons. =)

I like that Ian doesn't pretend to be the greatest shooter alive or some amazing marksman(though props he does make good shots on some of his vids), and seeing his mistakes is better than just seeing a highlight reel like some other channels would do with their content. Every challenge is that - a challenge, if you don't make mistakes you never learn what your weaknesses are and where you need to improve and work on and every mistake is a chance to learn and experience something new.

I wonder if Ian will be using the MAC 50, the PAMAS G1, the HK USP OR going full "tacticool" with a Glock 17 in his next French Operative after the MR 73 "It was not a Good Idea".
@jean-pascalesparceil9008
@jean-pascalesparceil9008 2 жыл бұрын
HK USP was used (now replaced with Glocks) by Army special forces 1st RPIMa, but with HK 416, HK USP compact is the Navy handgun but Commandos Marine (Navy SF) use Glock 17 or 19 with different rifles but no FAMAS, so if he is going cold war "standard soldier" the MAC 50 would be the only option, with some tuning (fixed sights) it is not too much a handicap with its 9 rounds magazine.

I think he should go full WW2 French Resistance and have someone air drop an FP 45 Liberator to him on the range. He has to shoot and reload the Liberator until he successfully hits, at which time he gets to trade up for a "captured" Walther/Luger and comparable set of German WW2 weaponry for the remainder of the match. In fact, this sounds like a great idea for a themed shooting event, make everyone do it!

@@jg8263 Yes, first stage a Liberator then according to your score next stage with a .32 or a P08, P38, Radom, Browning HP, again according to your score a K98 or a G43, FG42, StG 44...

Should have got the PAMAS G1 for sidearm. Edit: Basically a Beretta 92F copy but the slide was crap, after about 6000 round it shattered due to bad material.

@@bamboozlednoodle6513 Yeah it was used during my time in the legion in the 80-90's and not the best pistol but in this case for sure better then that revolver. Also fun fact, the company that made that pistol planned to redo the slide in stainless but went out of business before so. Then there was the Mac 50, also a 9mm pistol made in early 50's if I recall it right. I actually think that Ian had one and done some shooting with it, if so he should have chosen that one ;) Both pistols are now being replaced by Glock 17 that will be the new standard sidearm. The special forces use HK USP as sidearm and done that for some time.

@@levergatRapha Totally agree on that. When I was in the legion we had the Mac 50 in our regiment but I saw the G1 around, it was an disaster. The Mac 50 however was a descent pistol however those we had showed their age and they were used a lot in the field.

The video footage from the stages is really impressive! First I have to say, I really like the more focused lens on the camera, you get the feeling of being there realy up close, not missing the slightest detail... Very Movie like ;) And the general image quality is also super nice! Overall a really "welcome variety" to the usual "action cam wide-angle footage" In my opinion! More of that please :)

Trying to reload the MR-73 left-handed is a tough row to hoe. It’s quite a bit easier for a righty and with some practice can be respectably quick. I was surprised Ian went single-action only. One would think the MR-73 in DA would be up to the task. Still super awesome to watch! Love seeing the French kit in action!
