Lgive that stalk another week or so and give it a try. My Spanish daggers never taste bitter at that stage, but the stalk becomes even sweeter as the bloom progresses.

Hello Bob. I learned about the edibility of Yucca from you. Alamogordo, NM. A number of local Mexican guys I have come to know, they thought I was crazy for eating the blossoms. They had never heard if that before.

I say this even though you lose a lot of nutrients from boiling it... this is something very valuable to learn.. because this is food in the desert. This is food that could keep you and sustain you and keep you alive... so we're not too concerned about nutrients being lost by boiling. At least not me. I'm looking at staying alive and making it another day and if I know I can eat something that's going to keep me alive that's awesome. I just bumped into your videos and I love them. Thank you so much for the time that you take to make them. Great learning tool for survival

Yucca is also bitter in West Texas all the way down to the border. I don't think it is regional. LOL Actual. Watching you eat that piece raw my jaw tightened up with remembered experience, from around 50 years ago in scouting. Thanks for your sacrifice, and the instructions on how to make it more palatable. As I recall, we only ate this, and prickly pear, raw. Yeah, you can get some calories that way, if you are really, really hungry. For the foreseeable future, the Yucca are safe from me.

Hey brother! Great video as always. We have yucca in the north east know locally as Adams needle. Very versatile.. edible, soap cordage., and the woody stalks are stellar for friction fire.. ours however might be slightly different species as I've never seen the chest burster pod before. Thanks for taking us along. May the forest be with you

I would love to have Yucca blooms that size! In Western Nebraska they're more like tightly packed "branches" and they are very tasty. Especially if you cook them in butter with some garlic powder. We don't find them particularly bitter even when raw. Chili powder always helps too! LoL

You know it’s interesting that you don’t like the taste of yucca, while Bob Hansler practically raves about it in his videos, (he had me ready to cut up our yucca and fry it up, I was really hungry watching the video)I know that location makes a difference in taste and as well as species etc. I agree with your taste, I ate (or tried to eat) a petal of yucca once. Tasted like a bite of Ivory soap! Took a while for the taste to go away. Now don’t take this wrong I love your videos and you and Bob are some of my favorites. You’re one of the coolest and nicest guys in KZfaq and I enjoy your vids so much. Glad I didn’t munch on the yucca, I need the cordage!

personally i'd just keep a few limes or something acidic around in my pack, a lime wedge with a bit of salt while boiling the first time will destroy most of the bitter as this is commonly done for other bitter foods, once boiled drain that and add in peppercorn, butter rosemary and anything that will compliment the bitter so it's no longer a bad thing.

If you are not sure and only if the situation is dire you can put a tiny piece in your lip and wait ten minutes to see if you feel any tingling or numbness or any other sensation in your lip for telltale signs of poison. Don't swallow any of it while waiting not even your spit while it's in your mouth. If there's no change then it's probably safe, but not a guarantee of safety. Do so at your own risk. Best bet is to find a horticulturist or someone in your area that specializes in your regional plants.

Hey would you recommend traveling at night in a desert survival situation, I have heard some people say it's to dangerous because that's when all the predators are out: Its better to travel early in the morning and as the sun is going down: so what do you think desert fox? Also if you had like a headlamp or flashing with spare batteries to travel at night would that change the equation a little bit?
@JunkyardFox
@JunkyardFox 3 жыл бұрын
there are some advantages to traveling at night in the desert, like you dont cook under to sun, losing preciuos moisture, if you know celestial navigation, thats a great advantage too, however, there are drawbacks too. in my experience, its not much the predators but things you can stumble into like spines, holes made by rodents, which can bring injury(falling and spraining your ankle will make things much worse), plus its much easier to get lost in the darkness. a flashlight most definitely can help, and if youre traveling a short distance, where you can clearly see your destination, then thats fine, but other than that, id suggest you wait to travel around early morning or at dusk when the sun is cool but theres enough light so you can see where youre going.
