Eddie Bravo, Anthony Birchak, and John Botello discuss why they believe gi bjj is useless for MMA training and real life situations.
In this interview I brought up any counters I have been told by gi supporters and the group refuted them in detail.

Look at the difference in wrestling skills at no GI championships like ADCC vs let's say a IBJJF world's tournament . It's because people.pull guard in a GI because the GI makes wrestling harder ( collar grips , tie ups , ect ) and makes it easier for people to just cling onto their opponent in open guard if they don't know how to wrestle . In no GI its not as much of an option just pull guard , Especially in MMA or in a fight . Being dependant on a non rip piece of material is soooo impractical for a self defense situation If you know jiu jitsu , you don't need the GI to keep posture or take someone down . Period . EDIT : reason i mentioned wrestling is because thats what you'd wanna use for self defense , not a freaking spider guard pull .

They are incredible martial artists also though. John Botello is why there are 10th planet locations across the country. He was the first to franchise it, Eddie and him had to figure out how to do that as it went. His insight is beneficial. And this is Anthony’s dojo, 10th planet Tucson owner and black belt, and he got these guys together to do this. All great in the video!

I've seen old judo videos from the 50s where they were topless and training throws. Rule sets for competitions and governing bodies seem to be the most significant influences of how these martial arts are practised. That's why judo seems to be less prevalent in MMA because everyone trains for Olympic judo and neglect the techniques that get nerfed by the IJF. It fucking sucks because old school judo is fucking badass

There's a mistake in thinking judo and wrestling have the same objective and so the takedown diferences are all based on gi vs no gi. Judo takedowns are lower percentage techniques becuase they're throws; they're meant to be high impact takedowns, it's not just getting them to the ground for its own sake.

every fight outside of the cage that i have been in, i was wearing clothes, jacket, shorts or pants. and Koral (jiujitsu brand) jacket has wrist and inside liner made from gi material so it won't rip. i have choked someone using a jacket, a quick ezekiel choke after using his jacket to get a trip/takedown. i Love no gi and am great at rubber guard and the whole 10th planet system, but training in a gi helps a lot if you or who you are attacked by are wearing clothes which 99% of the time when you are in public you have clothes and won't have time to strip down to your 10th planet yoga pants if attacked. maybe if your at the beach or fighting one of those macho man randy savage, rip your shirt off like hulk hogan street fighters. in the real world people wear clothes, and in is their wearing baggy clothing or jackets, knowing chokes that include their clothing or your clothing helps to know. one of my female black belt instructors was attacked by a man at a bar and she was able to use his jacket lapel and put him out with brabo choke. his shoulders were to wide for her to even try the no gi variation.

I train both gi and nogi. I can say that in my experience, after training in the gi for a while rolling without the gi is so much easier. Being used to wearing a coat and pants and then shedding those things is like becoming a great driver in an Buick and then getting into a corvette...it’s just faster and handles better. For self defense (which isn’t what they were talking about, but I think it’s important), training in a gi translates much better to the street because people commonly wear belts and jackets...I hardly ever see people wearing rash guards and spats on the street.

No go has less to learn. If you’re in it for self defense then no gi would be your better investment. I’m a white belt who’s been primarily doing no gi. During the fall/winter where people are walking around in jacket/hoodie and jeans training in gi resembles that more.

The best and most time/cost effective hybrid is probably short-sleeved gi top and short legged gi shorts. Less to grab on to, but always something, so you have a sense of working without cloth but with as well. 90% of self defense situations aren't at the beach there it's dudes in nothing but board shorts or swimming spandex. Simple logic. Sambo is on the right track.

Trust me, if you're rolling no-gi with some strong dude who knows some submissions and how to defend against them, all those years of training with gi will feel like wasted time. Gi works against gi. But heavy and strong guys don't really gain anything by training with gi. See ADCC, the heavier guys are like bodybuilders as well as submission experts. Also don't forget that five non-bjj dudes won ADCC. Bjj with a gi is a wonderful art, but the majority of all locks and techniques will seem ineffective when the gi is removed.

I think both should be trained, it kinda just works out that way anyways because most gyms do both. I do work in the Gi three times a week for 2 hours and No Gi twice for 2 hours and simply ask or can already tell what moves I learn in Gi that won't work without it and apply them accordingly Shirt/Hoodie chokes exist and I wasn't training way back in the day when leglocks were frowned upon so its not something I've neglected in Gi either. Not to mention Gi grips give beginners a second to think before they attempt to put the moves they just learned that same day on someone while rolling. I just like both

No-gi was always trained in Brazil, since the Gracies created the bjj, back in the day, they used to fight it the beaches in Rio, like surfers rivalry or any other reason, n no reason too lol, also vale tudo competitions was with little shorts like speedos, gi wasn't allowed, so they had to train with no gi. No gi is good fo mma, now, for street fight, dude, u need to be good on gi, u r gonna use your clothes n your opponent's clothes as gi, even if it fights without t-shirt, u can use your own t-shirt n pants. it's important to train both. In a real fight a guy who trains with gi n no-gi have a huge advantage fighting against the one who trains only no-gi, will strangle the guy that only train with no-gi in seconds using one of the t-shirts. In the army per example, they has to learn more of bjj with gi, in a combat u have a unpredictable fight, no one is going to wait one another to take off the t-shirts.

The gi or "kimono" were common clothing back then in Japan before western influenced. Now it's more of a tradition, but to say that it's unrealistic for the street, I don't think it's a good argument. Same could be said with strictly no gi (your opponent can't grab your clothing and you theirs), that's unrealistic too. So what I think is that you have to compromise, find common ground, which is, someone could grab your clothing and control you, but because you've adapted to gi and no-gi, you'll be able overcome the challenge

There should be a separate MMA sport with mandatory gi!

I do not think that would change toooooo much. Having a Gi to do things you otherwise cannot is nice, but if punches are allowed many gi approaches will just end with you getting punched in the face. Its not just that the worm guard does not work without a gi. Even with the gi it falls apart as soon as someone throws a punch.

yes. the reason I got into Pride to being with seeing yoshida, who I thought was a karate black belt fighting in the karate uniform against a guy wearing just shorts. The diversity in clothes, sizes, nationalities, skills, etc in pride made it so much more interesting. They should have a gi only mma league, and one where you can wear anything youwant

**Thugs pulling off their wife beaters before a fight** Welp looks like it's time for my Greco-Roman/ Collegiate Wrestling and 10th planet training to help me. No gi is better imo. If you train Gi I'd do It occasionally and Mostly Judo. Since step 1 of BJJ a ground fighting art is to take it to the ground. UNLESS you live up north, then gi is understandable.

Just cuz bjj is a "new" thing here in America, some people r trying to lie n make a fake history of Eddy Bravo being the creator of the no-gi style. It is all bjj with gi o no gi, the Gracies always trained both ways. Eddie just choose to practice a 100% nogi. Oss
