Design a Dress with Pintucks by Rotating the Bust Dart - Part 1

Today on Fit Tip Tuesday I'm working with my fitted shirt pattern to create a knee length dress. See how to rotate a bust dart to create a new style. Half of the dart intake is rotated to the shoulder to create the ease I need along the shoulder to create pintucks. The other half is rotated down to the lengthened hem to create an A-Line Shape. I'm also changing the neckline! Join me for Fab Fit Friday to see how I finish up this pattern and test fit it. I'll also share the fabric I'm going to make the final version out of!

Excellent timing Jen. I had been thinking the way forward for me to get a more flattering fit would be pintucks. I have a tunic that fits quite well so will follow along and give this a try. 😊

:))) That's how I felt when I finished shooting this tutorial... I outline things in my mind before I get on camera. Then I just start shooting... It can be a lot to keep track of while also sharing it in an order that makes sense!! Thanks for watching

I'm really looking forward to Friday and seeing more. I recently found a vintage tucker foot that will fit my Elna Supermatic, and this was a really helpful demonstration on how I might be able to accommodate tucks into my garments. I realize that I will be working with slightly larger tuck, but I am assuming the principles will be that same.

:) Yes... the math will be a little different - just divide the amount added to the shoulder by the total width of your pintuck to see how many you can make... Also, you can slash vertically down the pattern and spread it to add more ease if you need more pintucks. Thanks for following along!

I love the dresses with pin tucks but haven’t tried them yet. It amazes me how you can change a pattern in so many ways. I’m looking forward to see how the dress turns out.

I am all in for linen pin tucks! Why do you pivot at the bust point instead of the apex? Cool tool, pin tuck foot

Good question. Now I'm curious too.

That's a great questions. I pivoted at the tip of the dart because I'm closing the dart. If you pivot at the apex you're removing some additional vertical length. That's the same principle as closing the dart to create a princess seam. :) Hope this helps, thanks for drafting along with me!
