Abigail is interesting because he's got so many ups and downs. His initial reveal trailer was a bummer compared to what the competitors were getting and his character story mode is some goofy shit. Unlike Hugo, who's got an exaggerated but plausible physique, Abigail gets Bane's crazy muscles. He's got a face not even a mother could love, which I'd say is half design and half gross 3d modeling. He's not a cool dude, he's not a cute girl, he's not getting any popularity points that way. But what sold _me_ on Abigail was actually playing the dude. His animations and winquotes are all pretty funny stuff, and the way he plays is unlike any other SF character I've played. Playing Abigail, moving around as this playful giant, is so much fun and kinda puts you in his mindset. He's having a great time, and when I'm playing Abigail, so am I. I hope they bring him over next time - In a more Alpha-like artstyle, he'd probably look absolutely amazing since we'd get the big dude without the gross facial features or grotesque muscles. Bit disappointed in this episode, Abi. Even if you're not a Final Fight dude, and McMuscles did the job fine, I'd have liked to hear your take on the animations and character design.

I'm surprised you list several "Big Guy" SF characters but no mention of T-Hawk or the 7 ft walking wall of muscle named Sagat. Fun Fact, IIRC, Hugo's design is inspired by late pro wrestler Andre The Giant.

Abigail was the first grappler added to the game since Alex, who was the very first DLC character. Sure, the game had a bunch of big characters early on, but it had been over a year since the last character with a command throw had been added, which is why he didn't feel like an over-saturation of big bodies.

Dude you can beat final fight in like 20 minutes

I think there's one big character who has a personality besides being big and strong, while not being as "obnoxious" as Abigail: Iron Tager from Blazblue Iron Tager has this scientist vibe, from his rather methodological and subdued lines, to his story where he acts as both as an assitant and field researcher for Kokonoe, and especially his glass readjusting habit he does every so often, a trait that anime like to use to denote that one is a scientist. The fact that Iron Tager actually doesn't use any sort of Magic that's common in his series, but rather a technological invention (i.e. robot) himself further cements his role as an avatar of science. Even his in Astral Finish, where he comes out of his crator, the most notable thing you see is his glasses shining upon his massive body with a stern look is a very cool and subtle way of showing his rather stern and methodological personality. It's not the most outlandish personality, considering what Blazblue is, but I like showing a rather subdued personality like this.

So, you talk a lot about Abigail as a character and such, but you never really mention his animations per se. There's no real analysis on how he moves, the good things or the bad things... you just say that he's a big guy and does big guy moves, even talking about the origins of his moves (with the help of the awesome Matt McMuscles!) without actually addressing the animations of those moves and such. I love your vids, but this one felt like it was missing what the other vids have been focusing on.

I remember that i absolutely despised Abigail overall since day 1, he was just an embarrasing design in my eyes, but it didnt took too much after that for him to start growing on me, he turned out to be a really fun and hype character after all

Personally I loved interaction between Abigail and Alex in story mode. I wish there were more cool moments like this.

Finally! My boi Abigail’s A.B.I.Torial is here! Now I can go on my shpeal: So, the word of the day with Abigail is “Intimidation.” Fun fact for you: in SFV, the camera scales in closer when the two characters are closer, so when Abigail is right on top of you, his already huge frame is made to look EVEN HUGER, covering up the damn lifebar, even! This works in Abigail’s favor because he is a big, scary beatdown/grappler character. He wants to be on top of you, and then he wants you to panic, because when you panic, the Abigail player uses that against you to open you up and ruin your day with Abi’s CRAZY damage. So the best counter for Abi is to stay calm, and don’t let his size and damage scare you. Because of the slow recovery on his moves, waiting for your opportunity to hit him back is your best bet. So: Abigail’s gameplay revolves around this idea of intimidating his opponent, but we ain’t done yet! Cuz Capcom went the full mile by making the rest of him all about breaking that intimidation: Abi is a strong character, he’s good at melting lifebars like no one ever was. But his defense is lacking, to say the least: he’s bad at dealing with zoning, and he’s bad at dealing with an in your face 24-7, non-stop pressure character. This is all part of that theme of breaking intimidation: Abi’s a bully, but if you bully him back, he’ll fall just like anyone else would. This also shines through in his personality: He’s an 8 foot tall monstar who’s entirely made up of muscle, and he’s one of the leaders of a notorious street gang. Any sane person would be shaking in their boots at the sight of this guy... And then he opens his mouth and goes “Vroom vroom, I’m a racecar!” And it clicks in your head: Oh, this guy’s not scary at all. Tl;dr I love Abigail, he’s big and scary... But not actually, I don’t care what people say, he is my son. I feed him, he is becoming powerful. I hope this book report of a comment makes enough sense, it’s early, and I haven’t slept yet. Great video, A.B.I, kudos on getting Matt in there, I know you and Kura are big SBFP fans, and so am I, so this was a blast to see in my subscription box!

Abigail is an inevitably controversial, but very brave and funny design. He's a great addition to the roster and the general group of Street Fighter characters.

I'm probably a minority, but I absolutely LOVE Abigail's character design, animations and overall feeling! He expresses such a great personality through the way he moves and attack :) The reveal trailer was kinda lame, but watching Poongko playing him made me like him over time :)

Maki has actually made the transition to SF, even if it was just in some ports of the Alphas. It makes me mad people forget about that, but it is obviously Caocom's fault for not bringing her back!

You forgot to mention that Matt's one of the guys at Super Best Friends. Check them out at thesw1tcher channel. One thing I noticed about Abigail is that his whole height is about 8~9 heads to body proportions, while most other characters remain 4~5. Even Zangief only has 6 at best. I believe that this makes Abigail's proportions very offputting in Street Fighter V, where most other characters have very condensed proportions. Of course the only other character that have very odd proportions is F.A.N.G. , that one freak character.

If it's not much to ask, I'd like to see some Design Shops of characters from UMvC3 Mainly the Capcom side of characters have some *really* cool little things about them that I'd live to see you do, like Ammy from Okami, how her basic walk has the little plants grow in the same style as the Ps2 game. Other characters like Viewful Joe have some nice little things too, like the rose petals when he taunts. MvC Infinite was a big hype train crash, so 3 would be the best. You'd have a good amount of backup for characters too. Tron Bonne for example was in MvC2 and had the Gastaff in an rpg game, which I sadly can't remember the name to. To make you happy, most clothing in the game are animated (I think, they look like it, don't kill me for getting this wrong)

Abigail is actually also in the original Final Fight game titled Mighty Final Fight (1993) for the NES. If you are interested, play it, it's still a good game.

as a non sfv player, i was wondering why a lot of people hated his reveal. when other fighting games had epic new character reveals and you only have abigail which most people dont know of, I'd also be disappointed if I were an sf player at the time.

I'll be honest, anyone who has an issue with SF characters cuz of story reasons is very pedantic. SF has a shit story, so honestly, i always liked the characters that had simple, easily communicated personalities. You want a character who's got a cool car aesthetic, just make him obsessed with cars to an unhealthy degree. I mean, people LOVE Hugo, and it's a similar concept for Abigail. A big dumb muscle dude.
