Design Sprint 2.0 Monday
The map is one of the exercises in the sprint that allows for SOME discussion. Which is a big reason that it can cause trouble... In this video Jon does an excellent job of showing you how we run the mapping exercise during our design sprints, and he even includes a couple of things that you won't find in the book ;) And remember, this isn't Design Thinking, the mapping process is a bit different here!

When we redesigning an experience/service, do you think we can use the discover, learn, use and goal heading? Because our customer already knows our service and using it.

Great vid! Interesting hack around doing expert interviews earlier in the day. I’m looking at actually using the people in the room for the bulk of this - we’ve got many experts in the SPRINT who have come to the table from other industries etc. Have you any experience of doing this? Basically the prescribed format - but some of the participants put on a different hat for a moment and sit in the hot seat.

@AJ&Smart What about "in house users" ? e.g. in context of building cms system for our employees. What name of steps would you suggest? Because they DISCOVER probably as a mail tool to work on, LEARNING during onboarding.... any idea what could fits better?

Love your videos!!!!! The editing is top-notch. I'm in the process of building my portfolio to get an entry-level UX position. I'm wondering if creating projects using this process wouldn't be wise. I feel like DT is so accepted as the universal philosophy to apply, that businesses looking to hire would look down on a candidate that has a portfolio that utilizes this process. Would it be better to just apply DT, even if I think empathizing so deeply with the user is a bit unnecessary/more of a filler especially when it comes to designing apps/sites?

Explaining how you approach problems and your thinking in each steps is worth gold here. Following the same process as the firm may be good, but a good problem solver that can clearly explain their reasoning is always a solid fit! Good luck!

Hey guys, thanks for some very interesting and insightful videos! I'm curious to hear if an actor on the map could be a piece of software? Say the area you want to map out is the use of a digital tool or page, where no human interaction is required from the software producer's side, but everything is automated. Like Momondo, where a user is clicking around and the page is supplying the answers. Would it make sense to describe the system as an actor which performs tasks in response to user input? Hope that makes sense :)

You could revisit these goals over multiple Sprints, but it's best to only stick to the one goal to keep people focussed on the main issue selected! Hope this helps!

Your video is a great example for identifying and getting users to buy or use a product. What happens if the user has already bought into the product. For example, with an enterprise product would you replace the top section? (Discovery, Learning, Using, Goal)

Hey David, the map always depends on the general challenge you want to solve. Of course if its a B2B product and you're just trying to improve one feature, then you don't need to start on some external website or something HOWEVER the "discover" heading might be the moment they discover the new feature. For example: a feature update email or a pop up. This helps when testing the product.

David Rodriguez Same process but you have to make a lot more guesses in the map. That’s fine, it’s only an alignment tool, not a realistic user journey map.

Got a question - Do we Map for a specific business (such as "Laundry Service") or a tool/website (e.g. "Laundry Service website"). Both can have different set of actors.

Thanks Jonathan. Liked the flexible approach to the mapping - people tend grab the book and go Bimby recipe book reading. Just one question (completely on the side) - any directions in Europe for magnétic full-height whiteboards? Although it made you drop the markers, it really gets constraints out of sight. Cheers

Hey Jonathan thanks for this video tutorial. Quick question. For individual personal projects, can one use the Design Sprint and work on it on their own or is the Design Sprint really only meant to work as a collaborative team effort?

Also depends on your context. If you're writing a book then perhaps it's just you or you and someone you're writing for. The point of collaborating is that your team all need to work on this together so that they are aligned on future decisions and work.

Thanks for the great Video. As I understand the map should focus the moment now. I'm wondering what kind of map should the team draw if there is no product yet? e.g. a startup with an idea that don't have a marketing/sale strategy yet.

I thought i mentioned this in the video but maybe I missed it: If there's no product yet you draw what the "actors" are doing today without the product so that you can target an area to focus your new product on. The Bluebottle coffee example was pre-them having a website btw - so in this case they could "Guess" what kind of pages would need to exist.

He Jonathan, thank you(!). I've a question about how to organise the HMW: We end up in a lot of HMW so it makes difficult to order them. Should people write less notes? Should we put up categories before organising? How should we define those in advance? Is there an easy way to remove duplicates?

Hey Jonathan. Love the video! I have a question about running the Sprint for your early stage startup, when you (I mean: ME) have only two founders. Any tips? I've also been thinking about asking friends and old colleagues to collaborate in the Sprint. But unfortunately, the only possible way is to do it online (yeap... hangouts + google slide). Hi Jonathan I am delighted to follow AJ&Smart as i am currently in the process of understanding Product Design. I work in an entirely different field and want to switch to product design. I am currently going through resources which describes the Product Design process , of which your Videos are giving me an amazing insight. Though I am currently learning various stages like IDEA AND VALIDATION UX/UI DESIGN SPRINT KEY METRICS I am not aware of the various roles(specializations) in which i can get a job in an agency. and secondly do i need to be a coder. I would like to ask that What are the roles a design agency hies designers/what are the roles(design)and what do i need to learn specifically for those roles. Do i need to learn coding. EXCELLENT question! If the product doesn't exist, then you would build a map based on your hunches on how the customer journey would look. It's important to remember that the map doesn't need to be perfect, or even "correct" but it's just to find a focal point for your Sprint week. So do what you can, and fake the map to the best of your ability if the product doesn't actually exist yet! Hope that helps :)

The other option is to draw what that "Assumed" customer is doing today. As in, how to they complete the goal WITHOUT your product.

Hey guys and @AJ&Smart , I'm trying to use the Sprint framework, but I'm struggling to adapt it to my specific situation. Wondering if anyone has any ideas? I work in a B2B product setting and. I want to use the Sprint to come up with new product ideas, which makes choosing the 'end goal' quite challenging, as we don't yet know what that end product looks like ! I've seen the comment below that when there is no existing product, it makes sense to put yourself in the customers shoes. Would it be correct for me to assume that here you use the goal the 'customer' is aiming to achieve, and then map our their journey towards reaching it? I'm trying to use this process to come with completely new products to fit into our portfolio, rather than looking for product improvements. We don't really know what that end goal looks like yet and that's what's making this difficult to start. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Absolutely, in fact it will make the outcome more immediately implementable.

But then what if this feature is connected to other feature? lets say it's for booking at Kayak. The sprint was meant to only improve the search functionality, while actually it will affect other funnel, like booking and payment. But the other funnels are not included in the session, because it would be too much people. What do you think about this?

Luky Primadani the sprint can be used to work on a feature in isolation of the rest of the product in order to validate something big. If the team decides to use the outcomes of the sprint in the real product, then feasibility, consistency and technical considerations begin. But in the sprint itself you can ignore these limitations.

Please help me understand, I was studying Design Thinking until I met your method, guys. I'm quite fascinating, but a little confused now. If the product, after all, is done for the user/consumer, when the consumer is inserted in the process? Maybe I have not gotten in the video with the user yet, but in that part of the "discover" of the map, why not simply ask potential users where they discovered such service/product? You do not have to enter the field of emotions etc etc, but I have been taught that we should not just try to "guess"

CanalSemVinheta when you run your first design sprint you can do a pre research sprint so you already have some ideas of how users use your product (or if there’s no product yet, how they use it). BUT the idea of a design sprint is that you can first guess/make assumptions and then during the first test you find out if you were right and wrong. Lots of new videos will come out on our channel to explain this very soon!

You answered quickly, guys! Thanks! So I just saw all the videos in Sprint 2.0's playlist and I had a better idea of how you guys do it. I think it has some out of order or does not tell on what day of the week certain process is done, for example: the video that explains the storyboard is before the Brittni video explaining how to vote for a concept. Just a feedback. Will you continue with videos of the other days of the week, like the one that involves prototype? I would love to see. I think I'll mix the Design Thinking philosophy approaches with your handy Sprint Design. Soon you will receive my portfolio, it is already a great ambition of mine to work with you. And yes, I saw Jonathan's career advice ;)

I have a painful doubt :/ One you have the HMW's, the Long Term Goal and the Sprint Questions. How can you decide the map goal? Plus, how can you decide the map goal avoiding pointless and time consuming debate? Thanks for all in advance guys!

Before we enter in a Sprint, we usually have a pretty good idea of what the map will look like. This helps a lot to avoid pointless discussion with the team or going around in circles for ages. We hate that too!! Just start drawing the map, and let the team interject, but it will help if you already have an idea of what the map will look like going into the exercise! Hope that helps. Remember to KEEP IT SIMPLE. The map is only there to help you pick a scope for the sprint (an area of the product/customer journey to focus)

This isn't a customer journey map, we're focussing on our goals, not the customers and we're keeping it simple: "Buys coffee" is a perfect way to end the map even if the customer had other motivations. Remember the point of the map is simply to find a target to act as a foundation for the next exercises.

some geeks superficial understanding of customer journey that is why scrum is needed you get the so-called MVPs wrong all the time with this simplistic approach then you come back again. leave the job to professionals

the problem is these examples are always painfully simplistic, if you can't serve a cup of coffee you're fucked
