In an emotional debate, the Senate adopted an amendment Thursday, May 27, to the State Government and Veterans Bill that would declare May 14 as Hmong Special Guerilla Units Memorial Day. St. Paul is home to the largest Hmong population in the nation, and many immigrated following the Vietnam war, where men and women fought in the American Secret War in Laos.
Sponsored by Senator Foung Hawj, DFL-St. Paul, the amendment recognizes May 14, 1975, the last day of the air lifting of Hmong families and soldiers from Laos. In 2016, a special memorial on the State Capitol grounds was unveiled that recognized the Secret War in Laos and the contributions of many Hmong soldiers that were recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency.
