In an emotional debate, the Senate adopted an amendment Thursday, May 27, to the State Government and Veterans Bill that would declare May 14 as Hmong Special Guerilla Units Memorial Day. St. Paul is home to the largest Hmong population in the nation, and many immigrated following the Vietnam war, where men and women fought in the American Secret War in Laos.
Sponsored by Senator Foung Hawj, DFL-St. Paul, the amendment recognizes May 14, 1975, the last day of the air lifting of Hmong families and soldiers from Laos. In 2016, a special memorial on the State Capitol grounds was unveiled that recognized the Secret War in Laos and the contributions of many Hmong soldiers that were recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency.

Senators Pratt and Andersons' assertions further highlight how very special this very memorial day is. Senator Carolyn Laine, thank you for your support of Hmong Special Guerrilla Units Memorial Day. Just for the records, there were more than 35000 Hmong serving alongside the CIA during the Vietnam War. The specific 35000 number reflects the number of fatalities alone.

May 14 was the day Hmong were defeated and shed bitter tear for the loss of Laos to the communist regime. It was not a good day. In fact it was a sad, poignant day for the rest of Hmong and Lao people outside Laos. It is not worth to observe this day. It will be a celebration of defeat.

Senator Eric Pratt, you choose not to honor what Hmong people should earn through their hard work but you are honored that they have risked theirs life to fight with the CIA. If you are put in the same postion, will you also want to be honor for what you should earn through the work you put in. Senator Brace Anderson, Hmong has the right to earn this honor since they are US allies and fought on their own when CIA withdrawal from the war, but they didn't ask any thing in return just to be honor what they should earn.

True that a few groups from Laos fought during the Vietnam War in laos but they CIA recruited the Hmong as those who fought the hardest and deserve it. The French has known the Hmong well because they have been helping the the French, which who referred the Hmong were the only one care most to help the US fought. Laotion and other. Ethics group would not do the job even CIA paid them.

Senator Foung really didn't need to tear up in his speech. It was kind of embarrassing to witness a government official crying in the middle of a debate speech, whether it was for empathy or personal experiences. Should have kept it professional and to the point.
@koreancowboy42
@koreancowboy42 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry. Were you there? Were you there to fight there? Did you live in such a place like that? Like my people did? Emotions atleast still defines us as humans. Don't say it's not professional. It has no leeway of trying to bring the government to feel empathy but to atleast recognize that my people died so 40,000 americans didn't have to come to fight in that war. You act as if you had such things happened to you. But lived as poor as hell due to that war, take a look at people that you Americans supported. Many of whom were either very poor and living like us or had nothing. We as a human being and peoples wanted to prove our worth. Also should've shown respect to any of the people's who even joined fighting with Americans. Koreans fought in Vietnam and were best troops. Check out the video Why Korean soldiers were so feared in the Vietnam War. By simple history youtube channel. Then of course us, the Hmong. We were given supplies and weapons. But we had to do other things and such much more in order to survive from horrors of war and starvation. Regardless of it being embarrassing, it's to make it stand out. Who were your people. Did you lose alot of your family members and peoples to not get recognized? Freedom isn't given. It's earned, our people the hmong are a proud people.

Senator Foung Her as a body law maker you really need to evaluate why May 14? May 14 was the day General Vang Pao got out of Laos another word it was the day the defeat of the Indochina war in Laos. How could any one celebrate a defeat of a war? Only the Hmong Veteran celebrated the defeat of a war. we had to remember our Hmong brothers were used by the American as soldiers for hire. There were fifty thousands US veterans died in Vietnam and they didn't even care. There were many US veterans homeless in the street of America. If there was to be one it should be another day rather than the May 14.

Just because we are UNITED as one does NOT mean we cannot celebrate individualism of each cultural group. The big reason why the Hmong people are here in the US is because the Americans requested the Hmong people to fight in the war and guide them in our home terrain, eventually losing and causing a prolonged history of a SECRET War STEMMING from the Vietnam War, as well as, causing pain for our people in which many of our families had to run and flee. Honoring our people should not be political, it should be done out of respect for our people and fallen soldiers who chose to sacrifice themselves for this UGLY US history. Thank you to all those senators and community members who stand alongside the Hmong people.
