Hi everyone! There's so much bad lighting out there! Let's talk about what NOT to buy! Buy this! NOT THIS! Avoid buying these lights and you'll have design friendly lighting for your home.
Lighting is such an important part of every space and I think sometimes people don't spend enough time searching for something that looks great while still being functional. I mean function is really important... For sure. But style and design is also, really, very important. And the good news? There are so many lighting styles that will look great and be functional at the same time! So there's no excuse!
Today I'm reviewing some very popular lights that I see in so many places where other lighting could be so much better! I guess these light fixtures have just become automatic options for lighting when in actual fact, they're either dated or overdone or just wrong for the space.
So enjoy the video and go out and confidently shop for new lights!!
Plus... Find out what my mission in life is! :)

looking for lighting is always very stressful and overwhelming. We are building a new home and will have to go thru this stressful task of picking out lighting for all rooms of the home. Not something i'm looking forward to. your video has some good information and was planning on avoiding quite a few of your 'not-to-buy' lights, so glad i'm on the right track. thanks.

Thank you for the ceiling fan tutorial. Own a 1940 house, ceiling fan situation is a nightmare. Ultra-modern in dining and living rooms, huge Victorian with light kits in the small bedrooms which all fans have remotes that are either missing or broken.

My son heard me watching your video and said that he hoped I was taking note of what you said. He hates our dining room light which looks like a chandelier, very out of place. I struggled to find lighting but settled on the inappropriate solution. I am also going to look at our ceiling fans (a necessity as we do not have AC) to what needs to be changed out. I have one boob light remaining on which I will follow your recommendation. Thank you for this inspiration.

I am a gentleman of modest means who is renovating my 1970's home after having been away for a while. Once a month, I hit the local Goodwill's for home furnishings: kitchen furniture/appliances, draperies, china cabinets, etc. Habitat for Humanity is also a great resource. With your recommendations, I've been able to be more discerning in selecting stuff. This discussion of ceiling lighting and ceiling fans is timely. My house is a study of "don'ts" : boob ceiling lights and "Victorian" style ceiling fans. ASAP, the Hollywood bathroom lights are out the door. With patience, I'll be able to follow your recommendations. And this makes scrounging around for stuff fun! Thanks!

What do you say about ceiling fixtures that are LED mixed with incandescent lamps? I thought that was frowned on by designers. The issue with flush mounts is when you need three or four for entries and halls at $300-400 each for nice ones it’s a bit much (looking to freshen up to sell).

The advantage of the boob light is the ease of changing out burned-out bulbs. Question: Is any fixture that has a nut that allows one to remove the shade to change out bulbs a "boob light" or is it the fixture you show specifically?

I recently went shopping for new lighting...where I discovered the LED lighting fixture. There are no bulbs; they work via your telephone; you toss them when they stop working. I was so confused and overwhelmed. What do you think of these? Also, I'd love to know your suggestions for making plug-in sconces look more sleek and professional. I hate the look of dangling wires that I'm seeing everywhere. Thanks for another great video.

I think that is not a sustainable lamp for the environment because it needs to be tossed out when the led diodes cannot be changed
@Designchickee
@Designchickee 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim... here are some FACTS I found about about LED lights. Today, with all the concern about our changing environment and worries about pollution and energy conservation, you can feel good about using LED lighting, because it is energy-efficient. When you use a 60-watt incandescent light bulb, for example, it uses about 525 kilowatt-hours of energy annually. The comparable 60-watt LED bulb only uses approximately 65 kilowatt-hours of energy each year. Carbon dioxide, a harmful waste product that is a major pollutant, is produced when electricity is generated. The less energy needed by a lightbulb, the less CO2 that is produced. LED bulbs don’t produce as much heat as incandescent bulbs, they burn cooler and are safer to use. Another ecologically friendly feature of LED bulbs is their composition. They are made of non-toxic materials and are 100 per cent recyclable. LED lighting is also more cost-effective and convenient in the long run than incandescent or fluorescent lighting. LED lights are solid-state lights and are more stable light sources than incandescent or fluorescent lights, making them much longer-lasting. For example, a standard incandescent bulb has a longevity of about 750 hours while a comparable LED bulb can last between 50,000 and 100,000 hours. 100,000 hours translates to 11 years of operating continuously; imagine not changing a light bulb for more than a decade!

Oh boy. I'm not familiar with a drum shade/ceiling fan but wouldn't the drum shade prevent the air from circulating?? I think I'd avoid it. Sounds too much like my example of two different light fixtures mooshed together as one. Mooshed. My technical term. ;) LOL Thanks for watching and good luck!!! :)

@@Designchickee I was thinking the same thing about air flow. I think I saw them at Lowe's and Home Depot on the website. I could be mistaken since I have been to what seems like a million. Lol I love your term "mooshed". Thank you for your opinion. I really appreciate it! ❤

Another design dilemma: Should I remove the wall between my kitchen and dining room? Are there guidelines for this? What are the pros/cons?
@Designchickee
@Designchickee 2 жыл бұрын
I would never tell you to remove a wall without knowing ANYTHING about your home and how it's been constructed. That would be incredibly irresponsible. You should really check with an experienced contractor or an engineer.
@antoniomarine1567
@antoniomarine1567 2 жыл бұрын
@@Designchickee Maybe I didn't phrase that well - it wasn't a structural question - I realize the danger and that an engineer is required. I meant, from an interior design perspective - what are the pros and cons of having a open kitchen/dining room vs separate rooms?

Not all flush lights are what some call boob lights. And I don't see the big deal about it, as they just remind me of Victorian times ceiling lamps. I have an original one with the pineapple glass that screws on and brass style on my hallway that will stay there as I do like it.
