Making a space feel cozy and inviting can be achieved several ways and the end result can be quite different as well. Cozy can be layers, textures and patterns all playing a role in making a space feel more inviting and comfortable while a darker, moodier colour palette is a sure fire way to make the space warm and inviting. Lighting should be soft and diffused and natural light should be controlled with sheers and drapery. And finally, the look and feel of furniture determines just how comfy the room actually is. Look for softer, rounder and plushier pieces signalling a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Just remember... Filling your space with comfort doesn't mean filling your space with clutter, so be intentional with your choices.

Great video! I like the layering concept, that's new to me! I love the minimalist look but yet books on a shelf win hands down when it comes to cozy and inviting! I'd much rather find at a strangers house, maybe a book on: ancient mesopotamia, flower arranging, classic literature, or songbirds of north America than no books on the shelf and then realize the hosts watch nothing but Netflix..... Books on the shelf mean cultured and open-minded vs uncultured and well.. "less to talk about". . I was hoping my husband would build cabinets for our books one day to provide a cleaner look. But now that I mention this... Maybe it's more inviting if they are displayed on shelves as they are. After all, I get nervous in strange homes where there's nothing tangible to read and everyone is just looking at their phones.

This is terrific! I have a chalet style house. The front room is a greatroom - combination living & dining space with a 20’ cathedral ceiling. I feel absolutely lost in the space. It’s big and cold. Your tips & tricks in this video have given me lots of ideas. Thank you!

I have a chalet style house My living room has 12 foot vaulted cedar ceilings with beams, a stone fireplace and minimal white sheetrock and lots of cedar walls medium oak floors and a cabin vibe. (not cheesy)All my visitors remark about how warm relaxed and cozy it is. You have 20 foot ceilings?. You will have to overcome that. Cozy is synonymous with security. Human nature does not associate cozy with wide open spaces. Start with the ceiling your biggest deficit. Darker paint , warm wood tones . Modest lighting and humble subdued colors. Whatever is in that room that is fancy discard it. White , modern, furniture is a killer so is leather though not so much cowhides with the hair intact. Good luck .

We have books in almost every room. In fact, I find that if I look around and don't see some books (at least some on a coffee table or a side table), I feel uneasy - it'd be like opening your refrigerator and finding nothing in it. Kind of like "it's time to breathe into a brown paper bag."

Not mentioned in this video, and not in any that I've seen, is using colour changing bulbs and led strips. I have over head lights that are bright if needed, however, all of my evening light comes form side lamps. floor uplighters and led strips. They are set to a soft orange. Side light or floor lighting is a must for evenings, particularly if you have trouble sleeping. If you get colour changing bulbs that come with an app, you can set up a schedule to turn on/change over at a certain time, which can be adjusted seasonally. For example, I have a desk lamp that is a cool bright white during the day because its over some plants. When it starts to get dark, it dims and switches to a soft orange. Many of the apps integrate with alexa or google home too.

Books add small bits of color ....just like nature , where your yard may be predominantly grass and trees the occasional rose bush or flower will give a vibrant bit of color and variety ....the spice of life. Virtually none of your examples of cozy resonated with me. Though a large number of items and accessories did. I have built vacation cabin retreats as a livelihood . If a cabin was staged properly the resulting rental record was dramatically effected. I recommend starting with a blank canvas....... remove everything from a room! The vibe that comes from that room should be cozy without anything added. You are already at a disadvantage if you are using modern furniture! You have to overcome every uncomfortable thing you add with something that soften or neutralizes the hardness. Other words for cozy is comfort, relaxed, warm. When your senses are given a break and relax you will feel cozy. Cozy for me is a fabric recliner (leather is cold) with a fire in the fireplace (wintertime), retro styled lighting giving an amber tint to a cedar walled room. I love plants. Antique accessory furniture with dark oak flooring with a nice medium tone throw rug. Soft music and a glass of bourbon and candles, a good partner, all undemanding surroundings. GranburyCabins.com my personal example.of something I designed and built. A picture is worth a thousand words. Great video ...made me think!
