Designed just to watch the trains run in N-scale

For this layout design, the client didn't care for a lot of intricate switching operations. He just wanted to watch a variety of long trains running through open countryside. That calls for a different kind of layout to those I normally design.

Simple layouts do have a certain charm, do they not? Delighted you are slowly getting back into life; it's what Ellie would have wanted. With best wishes, good luck, keep strong, keep safe and take care.

As always, exactly what the customer wanted. Even more importantly, it's good to see you start regularly climbing back into the saddle. Things should begin to get a little better everyday from here on out.

As an N-scaler it was cool to see how you maximized the use of available space. I switched from HO specifically to run more in a smaller space. Very sorry to hear about your loss. Will pray for you and the family.

I like the simple run by myself. I may eventually get into modular. That could be good for the active duty military life. Who knows. Anyways, great video. I appreciate you discussing how you’re doing since your wife’s passing. Although, I still feel you have nothing to apologize for. God speed and stay strong.

Short, sweet, simple, and succinctly what the customer desired. It’s a nice little layout and to be able to run in each direction is an added benefit.

Great to see a British layout designed with American styling. Think I would get a smaller refrigerator that would fit under the layout.

Your attention to detail demonstrates your depth of knowledge in both the technical and visual aspects of the layout, this combination is hard to find, and shows why people choose you to plan their layouts, great job. I think most people would be learning the hard way by trial and error which is both costly and time consuming not to mention frustrating as heck.

It's good you are feeling better. I have noticed in England they like to rail fan passenger trains a lot, not much into operations. This layout is really nice for doing that, I think you did great for what he wanted....thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👍👍

Hi Peter, Even though this is a simple lay-out in your words and did not take you long to create, I do see some nifty ideas you have incorporated into this layout. Firstly the double lift-up sections with both the fold-out legs; simple and elegant. Secondly, the Magnorail incorporation with the reversings loops/turntables in the invisible portions, so that the owner can watch a variety of vehicles moving by while his N-scale trains woosh by. Thirdly, there is plenty of staging room you were able to incorporate in the modest space you've been given. I hope you will come out of your personal darkness and find the joy in life and job again. Kindest of regards from The Netherlands Richard

I really enjoy your videos. Years ago I sold all my train stuff (I didn't have much, mainly Hornby) as I'd been storing it for 15 years and didn't have anywhere to build a layout. I now own a big house in Scotland (which needs e v e r y t h i n g doing to it) so there is hope for a new layout in the future........

I would love a layout like this. The only change I would make is to go with a single mainline with a run around. But I really enjoy railfanning layouts.

Totally understandable that you wouldn't be in the headspace for making videos after the loss of your wife. I can;t imagine how losing someone so important would make a person feel. Also I think If I ever get a layout I will want something like this one, Long loops where I can watch trains go and some off layout staging where I can store trains.

This is essentially the layout that I've made into a double dogbone. No helix or staging though. Just a little bit of switching but otherwise running multi loco consists with about thirty freight cars or so. Did the customer want to build it himself?

Nice to see an example design for a smaller, different style layout, thanks! How do you design the hinges on the folding section so that the raised track clears and does not crush the other level track?

@stevenmorrissett6849

@@mpeterll I saw those, but a simple hinge on the top of the baseboard, would seem to result in a clash between the tracks as the hinged portion tilts upward, unless the hinges are elevated above the level of the top of the track, in which case the hinges may be a bit hard to hide.
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 3 жыл бұрын
@@stevenmorrissett6849 On the upper (scenic) level, the hinges are clearly elevated well above the track. They will be flush with the scenery at those points (which must be the highest points along the hinge line). Since they will only ever need to flip 90-degrees (never closing all the way) the hinge plates can be completely covered with scenic material with only the barrels sticking out. If these are painted the same color as the dirt on the layout and further hidden behind vegetation, they will be pretty much invisible. On the lower (non-sceniced) level, the only thing that matters is that the center line of the hinge pin is above rail-head height.

It's good learning the different terminology between UK modellers and US. N gauge is a little too small for my liking but obviously great if you dont have lotsof space.

Maybe you should call this, "An Ideal N-Scale Track Plan," instead of, "Watching Trains Run," since you ran no trains at all. Nice layout diagram though.
