Hi Jacob! I got a question, for example I was hired by a company to edit graphics for their social media campaign, is it okay to add a font or color that is not on their branding guidelines but found it somehow aligned for their campaign and brand (assuming, I've discussed it with them)? Or is it only applicable for passion projects? What you did there is really cool, by the way! You earned yourself another subscriber! 😁

Hello Zhafire! Thank you for your question. As an outside contractor, the decision for if you can use colors and typography outside of the brand guide should be discussed with the key stakeholder internally (as you mentioned). Some companies view their brand guide as a rule book not to be broken in any circumstances, while others view their brand as more fluid and are open to stylized interpretation. Neither approach is wrong, it's just a difference in brand personality. As a contractor, you should always work to stay consistent with the brand personality of the client. Now, let's say you're working with a brand that IS more flexible in their approach. One thing I think can be effective is utilizing different typeface styles or colors as part of a specialized campaign. For example, that's what I did in this video. It's a specialized campaign, so I designed it to compliment the Coinbase brand, but still feel unique and different. If you have an idea for something like this, pitch it to the stakeholder! In summary, venturing beyond the brand style is something that should always be discussed with key stakeholders; however, there are times in which it can make sense and even be a powerful tool. In those cases, always ensure the added styles compliment the main brand and don't detract from the brand. The last thing you want is for people to be confused! I hope this helps. 😊
