Thanks to June's Journey for sponsoring this video
Noelle’s channel: / @costuming_drama
MATERIALS USED:
(Please know that these are affiliate links)
Cold press watercolor paper: amzn.to/2Fzl7qa
Sable watercolor brushes (#2, #10, and #0 used here): amzn.to/2DfgXBt
Watercolor palette: amzn.to/2FwRpSH
Windsor & Newton Gouache for opacity (sepia, red ochre, raw sienna, zinc white):
-Starter pack: amzn.to/2SYmqSJ
-More advanced pack: amzn.to/2Fv3IyU
-(Gouache is mega expensive so I usually just buy the tubes individually as needed from my local art supply shop and have been collecting colors for years, but the starter pack (or even just a basic R/Y/B, black and white) should be all you need to start off. I can tell you from experience that settling for cheaper brands is not worth it as the difference in paint quality is significant. W&N paints are water soluble and so can be re-wetted and used again once dried, while most others dry into plastic and cannot be reused. This also means that the paint behaves differently on the paper during use: water soluble paints should be able to be reworked after drying, but the cheaper qualities can’t do that. I shall stop pontificating about paints now. Carry on.)
Masking fluid: amzn.to/2SU4Q22
Background textured with tea leaves (Tetley’s English Breakfast if you must know).
Fabric texturing from this random burlap bag I found.

Is there no end to your accomplishments!? First I met you as a gifted historian and seamstress, then pretty useful around the kitchen and now... an artist! What next...? I covet your ability with a pencil and paint brush, I find it so hard to illustrate any of my designs. Have you read any of the Amelia Peabody books by Elizabeth Peters? Amelia is an Egyptologist and part-time detective and the time setting is the same as Sherlock Holmes. Actually I thought of her as soon as you told us about your latest intention as there are similar I highly recommend the books and I think you will see what I mean. Your exitement about your next endeavour shines through to all of us who have come to know you. I am really looking forward to this next incarnation, and the fun you will be having at custume college later on this year. Onwards and upwards my friend! x

What Butterick pattern was that number? 1881 catalogue? Lady Sherlock might like the bustle. Imagine all the stuff you could hide under that, like an Edison recorder with extra wax cylinders for confessions. On ONE of the other sides of the bustle you could be packing a full blunderbus and a small cannon lol. When you look into what seams were done with what method you will find the higher priced way will have more hand stitch and the cheaper the machine stitching. Also by 1891, the Singer Improved Family and Improved Manufacturing machines were all the rage for light manufacturing. I can send you an 1887 article about the manufacturing switch from vibrating shuttle to oscillating shuttle. The Singer 28 was most popular in Canada, more than the States. Lots of parts if you need feet for your's, or even a style 11 puzzle box. Priorattire might be able to help on Corsetry, i am sure you have heard of her. That would be a cool collaboration and she has courses, but they are in England.

Enola Holmes and her mom both do this(hide things in their bustles)- but not in the movie and im mad about that. Enola also hides stuff in her corset, including a dagger in the busk. So I am imagining an imaginary third part, Enola Holmes when she first runs away because BUSTLE.

I my friend and I just recently found your channel, and in talking about it we realized a very important fact: You are the Bob Ross of sewing. You're incredibly talented, sweet a candy, your videos are super relaxing to listen to, and my god have I learned a lot (I didn't know that the running back stitch was an option until I saw it in one of your videos, it made quick work of rehemming a linen skirt, bless). You are a treasure, thank you for doing what you do

This is a very creative way to announce a project! I love it! I also thought it was very creative to use burlap(?) to add texture to her skirt and overcoat. Ingenious technique! I am so glad that I found your videos. I have toyed around with the idea of getting into sewing again, especially when it comes to making historically accurate costumes (I have going to Ren Faire two years in a row to thank for this). They are pretty inspiring, and I love how you have incorporated some styles into modern day. I also love how you incorporate your research in your discussions; I love hearing about the history behind it all! Keep sewing! I look forward to seeing a complete Lady Sherlock!

I have to say that you are so happy with your vintage Singer that this is actually the same style of sewing machine still used and manufactured in Pakistan. Even though I've grown up using modern day Singers and Pfaff machines I do enjoy using the vintage style machines from time to time. Most tailors use the foot pedal powered vintage style machines. These machines are great when load shedding last for hours and sewing needs to be done.
