Great video...Can a thinner vinyl be used in place of fabric?

Is it possible to add a layer of batting material under the 6x8 cover piece in the first step to enhance the quilted look of the project? Or will that make it too bulky?

Maybe a thinner felt or flannel scrap under fabric would be enough to get the quilted look.
