Desktop Window Manager High GPU Usage Fix (Nvidia GPU)

- Latest driver update from Nvidia 522.25 made Desktop Window Manager to stay at 80-100% usage on idle
- Brought this topic on Nvidia subreddit and in one hour it got deleted and i got banned - i.postimg.cc/m29BWqD2/22.jpg so i've made this video
- You can search and download previous version of driver here - www.nvidia.com/Download/Find....
- For some reason the direct link doesn't work all the time, just google this - "nvidia advanced driver search", it should be the first result
- If this doesn't fix your problem, use Malwarebytes and run 2-3 scans
- If the problem still there, right click on Start - Device Manager - Display Adapters, check if you have 2 of them and disable integrated one (except laptops)
- There is a setting as well, Left Click on Start - Settings - System - Display - Advanced scaling settings - "Let Windows try to fix apps so they're not blurry", you want that option set to OFF
- You may want to go back 2-3 versions of drivers behind and see how it acts if the problem still there

Edit 3: Last version of driver 526.98 no longer has this issue, all other version between 517.48 and 526.98 are bugged af, plus that this version offers a boost of 4-5fps in FurMark burn test which is impressive (maybe 10 fps in a AAA game), didn't test the performance with game recorders yet but it might be fine tho EDIT: For people who are not allowed to downgrade, try this new version of driver www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/193884/en-us/ , this is 522.30 studio driver, usually only game ready driver have issues so worth a try, if the issue is still there the only thing you can do is to pass the load to CPU by turning off GPU scheduling until further updates EDIT 2: Nvidia fcked up really bad this time, i usually record my videos using Mirilis Action because it's a lot better than Geforce experience, after downgrading to 517.48 i started to get big problems while recording, the game stutter like crazy and fps drops from 120 to 15 when you have a big amount of information on screen (ex Kazuha Ult for Genshin players, or if you walk through a smoke in CSGO), the thing is that this problem doesn't happen when recording with geforce experience at same resolution and bitrate so i wonder what nvidia is "updating" with these drivers, just a side note for whoever records or streams Some people says that is a visual bug, it is not, since only GPU - 3D gets loaded the temps are not going up but you get significant dropped performance in everything which uses that, like browsing through windows explorer or playing a game To get temps up you need to have a load on GPU - 3D, memory and or video decode/encode which causes clock to go high as well hence the temp increase, as you can see in the video my GPU gadget shows low temps with low GPU usage but navigating through windows explorer or playing a game dropped my performance by a lot

Yeah not sure what to think now... I checked several hardware monitoring programs like msi afterburner and hwin64 and it shows 0 Usage... But when i turn off hardware accelerated GPU in windows settings it stops. So i thought it was a visual bug but why would turning that off effect a visual bug?? Also it seems for bf 2042 the GPU usage is 100% in the main menu and when a game starts it goes to normal varying percentages... But my games dont suffer. Does the task manager measure something those programs dont??

@@Freemasons1732 well for me for sure it does affect performance, as you can see on this channel i play Genshin and sometimes CSGO, got my performance dropped by half and navigating through windows was clunky af, then i checked what's going on and found the issue with the last driver update Now idk what to say, i don't loose anything by using an older version so i went for that right away

@@Freemasons1732 hello In bf 2042 the GPU usage is 100% after i exit the game on desktop i try anyting posibile but noting work for mee only to restart the pc ...but when i play the game after i quit the game my gpu usage is 100% on desktop ...i tri to reinstal the windows 11 end i dont install the drier end it work's fine i play the game i exit the game the gpu work normal 1-2% 0% but when i reinstall the driver my GPU usage is 100% after i play BF 2024 i have a RX 480 8 GB from AMD .....please help mee

@@ionut1485 I dont know about AMD but for me it was just an issue with nvidias newest driver update. It sounds like you are having a similar issue with AMDs newest driver also. I would suggest just using the old driver and sending a support ticket to Battlefield 2041 and AMD and not installing the new driver until there is a fix. I was also having issues with the game itself. Maybe AMD is having a similar issue. I am just using what works until i hear if it is better.

I did that last time, now it's new drivers and situation is the same, everyone telling UPDATE your driver, so I want have updated. And maybe this is good, I tried benchmark on driver 517.48 and got 3537pkt, in Superposition Benchamrk, with newest driver, 526.46 got 3567. (first driver here, is without this high gpu usage). I dont think pc is slower with this high gpu usage, temperature is the same as normal, so its just few numbers., And if you really dont wanna have this high gpu usage, just TURN OFF Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling in Graphics Settings, I had turned on, now i turned off and works for me.

Dude great video. I was completely lost trying to figure out why this was happening to me and then I remembered there was a driver update. This fixed the issue for me. Super lame they banned you for bringing up a legit issue.

@@skipperkowalskirico That's interesting, thank you for the info, the main problem for someone like me who was preoccupied with the bottlenecks that it could cause and who's driver advancements weren't directed to any game or specifically the technology in the GPU reverting was a solution; it's just more comfortable to do more stuff if the numbers are normal, narrows down possible hardware problems when facing Blue-screens or graphical glitches, etc

You rock! I thought that it was a Windows issue and I reset my OS. Which didn't really fix the issue but made it less prevelant. I then was thinking it may be a specific OS package and began researching that when I came across your video. I shoulda known it would be Nvidia drivers considering they're the first live drivers for the 40 series cards and usually when new drivers launch a lot of people have issues. I've since rolled my Nvidia drivers back and my GPU usage is stable. Thank you.

If you do NOT want to downgrade the driver you also can DISABLE hardware accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows settings. That will fix the 100% GPU usage.

You guys saved my life on this (NVidia 522.25) with my 3080. Wow. It was in fact the "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling" that was causing this behavior with this driver. All better now after disabling that and restarting. Thank you!

Had this issue as well. Turning off Hardware Accelerated GPU scheduling under the Windows Graphic Settings seemed to fix it without needing to roll back driver versions. Hopefully, I can turn that back on once they fix the driver issue.

Thank you for this video. I was not having this exact same issue but mine was similar. Ever since updating to 522.25 while I am in game it doesn’t matter what my card is clocking at. It could be 1200mhz or 1950mhz it is always at 100% load. I just reverted back to the previous driver and my GPU load is back to normal not pegging at 100%.

I bought RTX4090, and of course it cannot go to previous version that worked for me on my RTX3090. The only version available is the one with the Desktop Window Manager performance decrease built-in. Running at 70-100% gpu.. FML.

Holy shit fam - this actually works - to double confirm this, i also used the geforce experience app and redownloaded the latest driver as of Oct/27/22 and did a custom installation and a clean install without the physix download and audio download. and full restarted my pc. and it also worked. - Great job showing how the fact the drivers can also be an issue when seeing how pcs work with it's self and causes further issues. stuipid how reddit banned ya for this - maybe the devs should see this that their drivers is causing some issues still even with their latest patch.

Thank you so much I was losing my mind trying to figure out what the problem was I downloaded the new drivers two days ago and noticed glitching and freezing and seen in task manager DWM was at 100% I guess in the Navida was so excited about the 40 series they didn't troubleshoot the new driver's enough they were thinking hell with all the old series of video cards

It wouldn't be surprising to me if NVIDIA (or whoever runs the subreddit) banned you due to potential bad publicity during the "hype" period of the RTX 40 series. It's a blatant problem in their company's product (driver), and some person on the internet fixed their issue. Doesn't look too good, lol.
