So after a little delay I am tearing down my first Ducati Panigale engine, this is a change in direction for me and a learning experience as I specialise or prefer to work on the Desmoquattro and Testastretta engines in the Ducati range.
In this video you will see me strip the top end of a Ducati 1199S 90 Degree V Twin engine. This family of engines used in the panigale was the final development of the V Twin superbike engines before Ducati went down the V4 engine route.
I am stripping this engine for its parts as the cases are no good for road use.
In the video I will remove:
Clutch and Generator side covers
The Clutch
Flywheel assembly
Timing chain assemblies
Vert and Horz heads
I hope you enjoy the video, please like and share if you do.

Hopefully so, if I enjoy working on them. My favourite engines are the 748/916 series personally but it could open more options for other work if I can gain a good understanding of them.

This is great!!! I’m so excited for this series. I have been tearing apart an 1199 engine as well. I mainly am confused on how to time it, once the heads are back on. This will likely answer a lot of my questions. Your channel is gold on KZfaq. I am more than certain your videos have helped many of people through their Ducati struggles! Keep it up!!!!

By the way, you made mention of the steel water pump drive gears ... for my 1199 I got them from Ducati Kaemna in case you need them

I see the waterpump. Conversion to steel is just about £220, well worth it for the peace of mind! Unless I have calculated it wrong!

Excellent I have been waiting for something like this. My 1199 has done allot of miles 80,000km which is nearly 50,000 miles. It still runs great but is using allot of coolant. can’t see leaks anywhere so I can only assume it’s burning it which I’m guess is a tiny hole in a head gasket.

Interesting, not worked on these engines before so I do not know if that would be a common problem with age.

Did you get round to splitting the cases in the end? I have rebuilt 2 of these engines before, 1299s and panigale R which basically have the same architecture and I am not sure how it’s possible to split the cases without the cylinder liner puller tool from ducati which is quite expensive! I ended up buying one from the dealer as I couldn’t find any for sale!

I have not got round to this part of the strip down, but I am likely going to buy the tools following looking at the manual and as I may end up working on a couple more of these engines in the near future.

Love a good testa Evo but these make such good power with so few failures it’s hard to beat them. Why was this one torn down? I remember you swapping the early R engine into your 1199, but you never mentioned why.
@DesmoWerx

Hi Rob, this engine has had its numbers removed by the breakers who sold the bike after it was written off so the cases are no use to me. I have other cases and will eventually build this up as a spare for the track bike.

Nellie, inspirational tear down. Burt Munro would be impressed. Going 180° , what is the engine mount that you're using, is it adjustable for most Ducati engines. 👍👍👍👍😎( HOKITIKA STH WESTLAND NZ)

Thanks Kris, the stand is a Perobon stand specifically made for the Panigale engines so covers the 899, 959, 1199 and 1299 range.

I have this same engine with a cracked case where the clutch slave cylinder mounts due to drive chain breaking (at only 5k miles). What value is there in all the internals?
@DesmoWerx
@DesmoWerx 2 ай бұрын
Not sure on the value of the internals, its really a buyers market for these sorts of parts, I tend to hold on to them for when I might need them. 👍

I have painfully split two different 1199s engines. Rebuilding my 2nd one at the moment. It took me a while to get my hands on the sleeve cylinder removal tool. Curious how you will remove these sleeves without destroying them.
@DesmoWerx
@DesmoWerx 2 ай бұрын
Its part of the process of learning for me at the moment, this is my first time tearing one down so I am looking at what can be done without the special tools and what I will absolutely need as a minimum. Good to know that I might have to invest in the cylinder sleeve removal tools, thanks :) For now its not a problem as I am doing this work for myself and will not be taking on any panigale engines until I am 100% comfortable with them, the tools needed and being able to do a good job.

Why the strip down ?, could u please tell us the fault you are repairing
@DesmoWerx
@DesmoWerx 3 ай бұрын
The strip down is to get the parts out of the engine as the cases are not usable anymore, I have another set of cases I can use but no gearbox etc
