I was at Peter Prier and Sons in Salt Lake City, UT, the other day trying out violins, and they let me play this violin labeled "Pietro Guarneri de Mantua". Authentic Pietro Guarneri violins are worth over a million dollars. Tell me what you think...is it worth it?

ROB LANDES is an award-winning violinist who started playing the violin at 3 years in Orem, Utah. Born to a large musical family, Rob gave his first solo recital at 10 years old, performed in the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on the Disney Channel with the Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, and founded a piano trio that performed actively throughout his teenage years. Rob has won first prize at numerous music competitions and has soloed with the Utah Symphony, Utah Valley Symphony, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, BYU Philharmonic, and BYU Chamber Orchestra. As a first violinist of the BYU Chamber Orchestra, Rob performed in more than twenty cities throughout central and southern Europe, and as concertmaster of the orchestra, gave a concert to a sold-out audience in New York’s Carnegie Hall. Rob was awarded full scholarships to attend Brigham Young University and Rice University where he earned a Bachelor’s in Music and Master’s in Music, respectively. While studying at Rice, Rob began covering rock and pop music, and upon returning to Salt Lake City after graduation, began playing with a looper pedal which he uses to create intricate and stunning arrangements of today and yesterday’s most popular music Rob recently won the award for "Best Instrumental" at the Utah Music Awards for his rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah".

Do you have a marshals music store near you? They have some really good violins there that you can test out and see if you want one. My beginner was around 800$ (2nd one), but you can rent it. I never paid the full rent, I upgraded to a intermediate violin now (3rd one). But my first violin was a cheap 60$ one off amazon, i only used it to see if i was truly interested. www.amazon.com/Mendini-Violin-Strings-Shoulder-Antique/dp/B01MXTCVFL/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1503799092&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=violin&psc=1

You just get used to knowing where your fingers are meant to be placed to play a certain note so you don't actually have no need to look at the violin as you play, you can read the music, stare out the window or close your eyes
@deathendz
@deathendz 6 жыл бұрын
if you play guitar its essentially the same thing, soon you're able to strum the chords without staring at your hands. After enough practice it all becomes muscle memory and you no longer need to look at the strings to play the notes you want

Slyst like most current songs, it has a something beautiful that lasts 5 secs and then it gets killed by basic overused formulas and shitty lyrics. In the case of this song I liked the beginning the first time I heard it, really called my attention... 10 secs later I was groaning in disappointment

Dude, those artificial harmonics (not sure what you call it on violin, that's what they're called on guitar) were amazing. I have always wished people would do more stuff like that. I have played the viola for a few years, but I play several other instruments. In my musical experience I have noticed the the culture of stringed instruments (of the violin family) is very restricting. You are discouraged from standing out or being inventive. This mentality is ideal for an orchestral setting, but it doesn't have to become a stigma stuck to every stringed instrument or piece of classical music. I love your feel and your imagination, and your "voice" on the violin (too many people sound the same). Your videos are awesome, keep it up!
@RobLandes
@RobLandes 7 жыл бұрын
+Camden Clark yes, they are artificial harmonics, and you're the first to comment on them! I absolutely agree with you, there are so many things we can do with string instruments but it's not encouraged in the Classical world t experiment with pop music in this way. I actually was really nervous to release my first pop cover bc I was afraid of what my peers would say, but after procrastinating long enough, I decided "screw it, you only live once" and now I get to do music full-time :) Thanks for your note, Camden, and keep practicing!!!

@RobLandes

+Purge Deadshot probably because you’re moving muscle to press down on the bow. I just use the weight of my arm so I’m literally just resting into the string the whole time! I’ll launch a tutorial website soon explaining the concept.

You give people too little credit. Why do you think so many scores in movies are popular and still remembered. A Classic or Post Modern piece sings to the soul while these pop music are just jingles made for immature kids. Never think little of your audience. If people don't want to watch unless you play a mainstream song of their liking. Then they never had respect for you and that beautiful piece of art you are playing.with then.

I picked up the violin in 5th grade (26ish years ago) and played through 8th grade. I kept it for a long time but never played it. I was broke a while ago and sold it (it was a 3/4 anyways). Now, watching this, suddenly my fire is lit. I just ordered an electric violin to practice with (there are 7 people in my house - need to keep it down, haha). I think I will watch this video every other day to motivate myself to practice regularly. Maybe someday I will play well enough to do a quality violin some justice. Oh, and thanks for almost making me cry with joy. The sound... just wow.

Koori Girl no idea why you assumed im australian, im polish. here you have 3 hours a week of theoretical studies, 3 hours of practice and, depending on your year, you also have a choir or orchestra practice. so, i was there everyday. but of course then you also have to give obligatory concerts every once in a while, which isn't too easy when you're an anxious 10 year old. and to get the first degree, you have to pass 6 years (unless you're older when you start, then it's 4 - and i actually was, but for some reason they decided violin is too hard and needs 6). i didnt really enjoy having no social life and being stressed about that all the time (i dont have to mention how bitchy music teachers were, right?), especially that i stopped enjoying violin very quickly and was forced to keep going there by my mother. so, that's my story
