After suffering through, "The Minions," there were three young women maybe early teens behind me and one said: "that was way better than 'Inside Out'!" I never knew that the slow head turn of disbelief was actually a thing until I did it myself in that moment. To be clear, I didn't engage with them in any way and doubt they even noticed me. I was just in so much shock at having heard that I wanted to make sure actual people were behind me.

Let your kids sniff markers for the Minion experience without Minion prices! 😂 Savage Dan is fun.

The first movie functioned better as an absurdist, if messy, allegory of self-doubt for new fathers--this is backed up by the mother's degrading attitude towards Gru until he proves himself a good father (that has nothing to do with his desire to be the greatest supervillain) and even the goal of stealing the moon is very similar to the idea of promising somebody the moon. On a personal note, it doesn't hurt that the three little girls are analgous by age and personality to my three much younger adopted sisters, and so the first film will always have a place in my heart. That the following movies progressively focused more on Gru's supervillainy and shift to being a super spy of sorts was disappointing to me--and the filmmakers' assertion that the children will never age as the series limps on is just more proof that they don't understand what made the first movie great.

I’m in total agreement with Dan here. The movie is not terrible, but after Inside Out; there is a huge gap in great cinema and this movie. But like Dan, I would probably prefer anything else to rewatching this.

So the song at the end is my favorite song of all time. Nothing can accurately describe the fear I felt when the first few notes started. Haunting. Genuinely haunting.

This is what upsets me the most about these kinds of movies: there is no reason to have big name actors attached to these for voices. All of these actors don’t need this work, and you’ve got plenty of jobbing professional voice actors who would looooove this kind of exposure and financial gain.

the 3D in Despicable me 4 is so damn good. we are so incredibly lucky to see *two* natively-rendered stereo films released within weeks of one another!

Inside out is an amazing movie, my kids like it. But yesterday my kids and nephew were hysterical!!! They absolutely loved it! They are 6, 11 and 12

I had no intention of seeing this until I found out some Minions were getting Super Serum, so I went. The mega minions were underutilized as was Sofia Vergara and the woman that got her hair messed up. I thought it was dull.

I have enjoyed this franchise in the past, but in this one it felt like they were more interested in doing a bunch of minion shorts and threw in a thin storyline for Gru to make it a feature length movie. I didn’t hate it, but I instantly forgot about it. Kids will love though, and I guess thats what matters.

The film looking like a collage on moments that really didn’t get a laugh out of me in the trailer is one thing. But I personally don’t like how it seems to completely disregard 3 and I don’t even hold 3 in high regard (just thinking it’s good). I’m not going to see it.

Just saw this today…my first ever venture into the Minion-verse because my nephew’s mom wouldn’t take him…I have lots of questions…but I’ll just stick with this.. What’s the point of bringing in Will Ferrell to just have him do a weak, vaguely European accent? I know you could say the same about Carell but he’s been doing it for 14 years, it’s kind of set in. See also half of Sofia Vergara’s lines being just laughter and Stephen Colbert having a totally nothing role. Mike White, whyyyyyyyy?

The story is really slapdash. I just noticed this was the third "Despicable Me" movie in a row in which the Minions get separated from Gru. I expected their storyline was going to involve a battle royale between the Minions and the cockroaches with the MegaMinions tipping the scales. But the MegaMinions seemed to only serve leading into a "We hate superheroes" joke. It was a wasted opportunity. (I also can't help but wonder if the ending song was picked because of Skibidi Toilets.)

This review was just fantastic 😂😂😂 I saw it today but for the most gimmicky reason. My family is now identical to Gru’s family. I have three little girls and a baby boy. I felt like I needed to see it even though I know exactly what I’m getting with these movies 😂 I really wasn’t expecting much, but I was weirdly more underwhelmed than I expected. I wanted them to do more with the baby and they just didn’t. I agree with you that it was way less annoying than the last three but still not great. I would’ve personally ranked it at “it’s fine”. But like I said, this review was everything 😂

Despicable Me 4 was by far the worst Despicable Me movie so far (maybe even worse than the 2 Minions movies). There was barely any story. So many threads that went nowhere and was completely pointless. The Mega Minions didn’t do anything except for the obvious merchandising opportunities. The karate? The hairstyling? Nope. Just single scene sketches. No role on the overall plot.

I agree with most of what you said, Dan, but still...I'm not a huge Minions fan and I think they are by far the funniest part of this movie. Not so much the Megaminions, which have some decent gags, but mostly the other Minions. As silly as it was the minion that gets trapped in the vending machine is the funniest part of the movie. I also think Minions 1 and 2 were better movies than this one. Like you said this one was especially unfocused. The Minions movies and the three first Despicable Me movies were sometimes more gag oriented than story oriented but didnt present and abandon subplots as randomly as this one. This was especially boring for that reason. It is very hiperactive so it may be entertaining for kids but as an adult I find it uninteresting if the subplots are not going anywhere.
