More than half the world's population is voting this year, many in elections that Francis Barry believes are designed to deepen division and distrust. Back in 2020, Barry set out to prove there is more that unites us than divides us. He bought an RV and made his way across the United States, speaking with people from every walk of life. The author and Bloomberg columnist joins the show to discuss his new book, "Back Roads and Better Angels: a Journey into the Heart of American Democracy," in which he chronicles his cross-country quest to bridge the partisan divide.

I have trouble agreeing that that “the relationship is more important than the political issue” when I think of the woman who is raped and forced to carry a child, the gay man who sees that his marriage could be not recognized, the activists who witnesses the increasing threat to our environment. What is the value of that relationship. Some relationships are not worth salvaging.

Well, I think the point is to mingle. That we look constantly at the media and dwell on the grim political and societal horizons (and they are daunting, I agree), and it's natural to conjure up in our heads a bunch of jerks, enemies and instigators associated with those things. Antsy in 1996, I left my secretarial job for 3 months, bought sleeping bag, tent, cooler and a burner and I camped solo around the US. Went to like 28 states, places in the middle that today are known as fly-overs. Naturally, my mother in Boston had me murdered a la Deliverance in Arkansas or GA. To the contrary: I met wonderful people...farmers, book dealers, waitresses, police, musicians, Amish, Mormons, super-duper Christian types in the rural south, park employees, docents, mechanics (my starter broke in Elko, NV) and droves of fellow campers -wealthy in their airstreams; not so wealthy in their cars. People are good; they are funny, nice, open and doing their best. (And gas was under a buck a gallon in the south....I left from the Bay Area...can't remember what it was there.) Relying on payphones to let my folks know I was still kicking. ; ) Cheers.

@@julieb7785 That's all good and fine. I can make small talk and be nice with anyone for a limited time. And I'm glad you're trip went well, but what is your point? How people vote has an effect on others' lives. Wait until your 22 year old daughter gets pregnant with complications but can't get an emergency abortion at 4 months. And your next door neighbor hangs a Trump flag and makes it clear she should NOT have rights over her own body, and she dies- are you still going to "mingle" with them? After all they're funny and honest and doing their best (to impose their religious beliefs on people even if it kills them). Take your time. I'll wait

In general, you can accomplish more my cooperating than by fighting. The particular examples you listed here are largely the product of people living in isolated bubbles with like-minded folk who aren’t truly aware of these situations that others outside their bubble are dealing with. That’s why people in rural communities tend to be more conservative while those in urban centers who live and work around a wide range of different people tend to be more liberal.

If you put more value on the relationship over the politics, over time people start seeing others who may be on the other side of the political spectrum, as people, instead of as "opponents" to "own." They start to actually care about someone else who may have a differing viewpoint about an issue.

Loved this episode and hope this becomes a theme for future episodes. So many of us need to hear more positive interviews and "news". ❤

💯 Thanks. He is denial of reality. Which is fine except that he will lead people astray away from fighting for equality.

The relationship is more important when you have no skin in the game and are not really effected by lack of services and taking away of rights. With all due respect does the author really understand that he is not get the pushback that someone with a different last name, skin tone , partner etc would. It does not invalidate his findings but lets be honest. Half the people he spoke with would not have given him the time of day if the above were different.

Populism isn't necessarily xenophobic. It is economic that, thanks to MAGA divisive rhetoric and the rise of authoritarianism in the US and all over the world plus a combination of human conflicts, divisiveness and the impact of the climate catastrophe has been paired with xenophobia, racism, classism, etc.

Everything that F.Barry said, just replace the name Trump with the name Biden. Then what was coming off of his tongue would have some truth value.
