I was delighted to see your video on Darmstadt. As an architect, I remember Olbrich's "Wedding Tower" from my History of Modernism lectures. My family emigrated to the States around 1850 from outside Darmstadt, so I hope to visit the place my family came from, this is a terrific introduction. Also, since the Bundesliga is now televised in the US, I developed a passion for Die Lilien.

In Darmstadt no one knows the Darmstadtium. You have to ask for the Schepp Schachtel which means crooked box. I know it doesn't make sense,but it's just the way it is.

I have had a love affair with Darmstadt which spans 60 years. I first came to Darmstadt as an American soldier. I spent 3 years on the Cambrai-Fritsch Kaserne. I started studying German there and went on to get my degree in German. I also managed to gain a German wife for 50 years until her death. We traveled back to Darmstadt many times over the years. My kids grew up thinking it was normal to go spend their summers with Oma and Opa. Unfortunately, at 80 years of age, I may not be able to travel back one more time. I do appreciate the many videos, such as yours, on You Tube.

Here's a German joke based upon the Hessian dialect: Ein feiner Herr fuhr täglich mit der S-Bahn von Frankfurt nach Darmstadt.

Nice vid, but you should have visited the Bollenfalltorstadion as well. It dates back to the 1950's and is the oldest stadium hosting a Bundesliga Club. The Lilies just managed to secure another season in the Bundesliga. For groundhoppers a great ground. Really old school, it's just hard to get tickets:-)

+Dwarven sphere No, most parts of the city were destroyed in WW2 by the Red Army and after it became a soviet exclave, almost all old buildings were demolished. The old city of Königsberg vanished and was replaced with a socialst model colony, with inhabitants from all soviet republics. Today the city center contains only of standardized apartment buildings and parks. Only a few buildings and ruins remain from old Königsberg, the most prominent is the medieval cathedral which was reconstructed after the fall of the iron curtain (with russian and german money). The only reson why the Soviets didn't destroyed it was, that the tomb of Immanuel Kant is situated there and they saw him as a predecessor of Friedrich Hegel, who was predecessor of Karl Marx. So, Kant protected his hometown even after his death...

From all I know the correct term for "Technische Universität" is "University of Applied Sciences" while "Technical University" rather means "Fachhochschule".
@rewboss
@rewboss 8 жыл бұрын
Well, the Fachhochschulen themselves all use "University of Applied Sciences" as their official English title. TU Darmstadt uses the German phrase on its English website, but other academic websites use "Technical University of Darmstadt" and "Darmstadt University of Technology" in roughly equal measure.
@xxlray

The f. Why are there multiple Luisenpläze ( one here in Wiesbaden)
@kroimon
@kroimon 8 жыл бұрын
+Burak Mazi Probably because of the Princess Luise Henriette Karoline of Hessen-Darmstadt, who was quite popular back then.
@varana
@varana 8 жыл бұрын
+Burak Mazi Luise was a quite popular name in 19th century German aristocracy (and probably in Germany in general), so there were multiple occasions for happy subjects to devote buildings, squares, roads, etc. to their benevolent rulers (or more precisely their wives and daughters). ;) Accordingly, Luisenplatz in Darmstadt and the one in Wiesbaden are named after different Luises, both the wives of the ruler of the country at the time.

I was beginning to wonder if I've been pronouncing "Hessian" incorrectly all my life. But after consulting Forvo, it seems that I've been using the American pronunciation (with a "sh" sound in the middle, analogous to the word "Russian") rather than the British pronunciation (as used in this video). Or possibly the correct pronunciation depends on whether it refers to the fabric or the German Bundesland?
@ArfurFaulkesHake
@ArfurFaulkesHake 8 жыл бұрын
+etvdzs Its both pronounced with an "S".
@etvdzs
@etvdzs 8 жыл бұрын
+book5ter Thanks! Just to be clear, I'm asking about how it's typically pronounced in the English-speaking world. Due to German's regular spelling system, it's easier for me to determine the correct pronunciation in German than in my native language. Honestly, the last time I've heard anybody here actually use the word "hessian" in real life was back when I was in primary school, when we used to pin items to a hessian-covered noticeboard. If my memory serves me correctly, we pronounced it with a "sh" sound, but it's all so long ago that I don't know whether to trust my memory or not ^^
@Anolaana
@Anolaana 8 жыл бұрын
-I don't mean to be too picky, but I believe Hess is a Laender, which is sort of like an American state or a province. Bundes refers to the nation (eg Bundestag, Bundesrepublik) so you have some weird synecdoche going on there.- And to be honest I don't think there's a "proper" pronunciation for Hess cloth, like that of garage or other loan words; nor is there a proper spelling variation for "colour" or "factorisation". Go with your regional ways and be happy with it; or go with the German way and be happy with that too :)
