Such a helpful video, thanks Sue! Had the privilege of doing a mountain flying course out or Kaikoura with Sue last year (highly recommended). Now I plan to put that training into practice by flying into Milford Sound.

Nice one Sue, that was fantastic. I was fortunate to have flown with Chadwick in Jan 1962 in his Dominie. A few days later he disappeared on the same trip in his Dragonfly ZK-AFB. But one of the most spectacular parts of our journey was the entry to Milford from the north, overflying the unmetalled strip as it was in those days, a tight left hand circuit as you demonstrated and a landing into a severe Northerly crosswind. There was just one other aircraft which I think was ZK-BFT of Southern Scenic - perhaps the legendary Tex Smith. Our trip was filmed by my parents and 7 minutes has been posted on KZfaq care of Simon Reeve of Whitebusfamily. There were no regulations in those days as to flight path and heights etc. When we took off again on runway 29, although that was not marked in those days, up to Harrison Cove, a 180 back to the strip and up the Arthur River to lake Quill and Sutherland Falls. Any other route out was not possible due to low cloud and of course the DH89 was fully loaded with us 8 passengers. You think a C172 is not that powerful. A DH89 in 1962 on 73octane even less so. The instruction for the approach, landing and take off is a must. The other absolute essential is to be 100% sure of the weather and your capabilities. This is the best of many videos I have seen for low hours pilots but do your homework. And everyone look out for ZK-AFB. It has never been found - even after 60 years - it is there somewhere!
