There was a race, long ago, that were chosen by the Traveler. They had Guardians of their own-- an equivalent thereof, at least, in their own culture. But the Darkness came to their world. They weren't strong enough to defeat it. The Traveler left, choosing to save itself rather than go down with the ship, and... in a way, that saved what was left of them. But at the cost of their Light. They were no longer Guardians... And that's why they're called _the Fallen._

Yeah, because Ghaul was _AFRAID_ to die. And all he wanted the power of the Light and its gift of immortality for is his own glory and ego, the things he forgot even as he worked with Caiatl to boot Calus's ass into space. And how his motivations came from how he was an outcast but he found the Consul as a father figure, and even if he helped the Cabal, he also was just about his own ego and wanting that power because of it, even if he showed why he wasn't worthy because, like Cayde said in the Shield Brothers Strike in D1, you needed to look at Ghaul's actions when he came to the system, not his words-- he sealed off the Light because he assumed it's what made Guardians special, and then he had hunted down and executed many Lightless Guardians like dogs just to try to prove his "superiority". It also ties to how the Speaker said Ghaul started small, and he would end small, even when he had become too powerful for us to handle and the Traveler had to step in to end him.

I like this scene. To me, the Speaker is saying it’s the Guardian’s devotion to protecting the Traveler and the people to the point of laying down their lives that makes them Guardians. Ghaul is only devoted to getting revenge and gaining glory for himself, so yes, he might as well commit suicide as try to take the Light from the Traveler.
@Kalebfenoir3 жыл бұрын
Also, the only way Guardians are 'made' is from the dead. If he was truly worthy of the Light, even as a Cabal, the only way the Traveler would have accepted him, the only way a Ghost could impart Guardian-like powers, would be if Ghaul died. It doesn't matter who you were, or what you did; it's about an intrinsic spark that the Traveler can use to make you a Guardian. Eventually, Ghaul realized that. It's why he directly fights the player. He wants to prove he's worthy, even of the Light he stole. And you know what? He succeeded. The Guardian cuts him down, kills him...and he comes back, full of the Light, and powerful. But... not because he was Chosen. Which is why the Traveler itself woke and took the Light back. He might have ALMOST been worthy...but he tried to take the Light by force, not be granted it.

I miss the Speaker. I always found it pleasant to go around him in the Tower, listening to him interact with his ghost, and the little reports he'd get. And the fact that even under pressure and torture, he still plays Ghaul long enough for the Guardian and resistance to be built up to fight back... That takes nerve. How long did it take us, in gameworld-time, to go to all those worlds, help stabilize things enough to even THINK of fighting back? Weeks? Months?...and the Speaker held Ghaul's personal attention in all that time, distracting him. Sure, his forces continued their plan, their advance, but his personal attention was elsewhere.
@ghostgirl6746 Жыл бұрын
Wow that was the best comment you made

Yep. And the Speaker also got into Ghaul's head when they had their "chants", because Ghaul couldn't see what the Speaker was telling him about the Light was legit, same with how the Traveler couldn't speak to him, but that his mask, as it did with other Speakers, allowed him visions from the Traveler, so he could guide the people of the Last City. Plus Ghaul didn't have the courage to be willing to die, which is why he wanted the Light to begin with-- for immortality and his own sense of glory and ego.

I have some respect for Dominus: he wanted to EARN the light, to be properly chosen, not just steal/take it. Showed he DID have some semblance of honor after all. That's nothing, however, compared to the respect I have for the Speaker, who trolled and resisted his tormentor to his last breath, enduring all kinds of unimaginable torture, and when he knew death had come for him, he decided to troll his captor one last time. The Speaker is a majorly unsung hero for stalling and enduring The Cabal so long.
@BryonYoungblood3 ай бұрын
Yeah, Ghaul had some honor, even if he wouldn't have been chosen due to the fact he was only out for his own ego and pride, and couldn't have the courage to believe in REAL self sacrifice and letting himself die before he got the Light. And for sure! The Speaker helped the Guardians with keeping Ghaul's attention on trying to figure out how to earn the Light, even pointing out to him how to do it... but Ghaul was too blinded by his ego to realize the answers in front of him, or believing the Speaker tricked him when he said the Traveler didn't speak to him, when in reality, the Speaker's mask allowed him to get visions from the Traveler so he could help the people of the Last City.

@erickruckenberg87162 жыл бұрын
Ghaul wants the light for immortality but the light itself shuns him. He wants to know what makes humanity so worthy. Essentially the Speaker says it all; humanity although ignorant can be brave to a cause which inspires others towards devotion into said cause. When devotion to a cause is so strong it inspires one to potentially sacrifice everything for said cause. If one is willing to sacrifice everything then one can be willing to sacrifice their own life which is death. Humanity demonstrated true bravery even when they knew death was inevitable... thus the Traveler gave them The Light.
@BryonYoungblood Жыл бұрын
Yep, and it also saw some of those qualities I'm sure in other races it visited while running from the Witness all those eons, even if it also came to Sol because it was wanting to rest, and considering it also refused to flee both times the Witness had come for it. In Ghaul's case, even with his actions and desire to earn the LIght, he doesn't have the characteristics to sacrifice himself for anyone but himself and his goals, and only seeking glory which is why he wanted to use the Light for. Like the Speaker said previously, Ghaul started small... and he _ENDED_ small.
