People should not go into the woods without a firearm ever. Just having one pistol would probably have saved this young man. So sad.

ive lost a brother when i was around his age, i feel sorry for him but in this case your brother gave his life so you could live now you owe it to him to live a life happy and love filled enough for both of you.

At 90lb this was a young cat , more than likely more aggressive over newly acquired territory and possibly had never seen humans before, to him they were just intruders on his “area”.

They were experienced hunters from the area. I don't understand why they would go out with no self-defense. Nature is our master no matter how much we try to control it and destroy it.

A couple of months ago(Northern California) I was walking home from work on a dark street at 1 in the morning. Something jumped out of the bushes near me and ran across the street. I said "what the hell was that"! I followed it across the street to get a look, it was a Mountain Lion! Needless to say a slinked back across the street!!

I hope this young man can move forward, this is an unfathomable tragedy, his brother loved him - that hasn't changed, he will be in your heart forever. Wyatt, be strong, your life is just beginning, you have much to give in the future. Stay positive ❤

A friend of mine and me were planting crops along a stream under the tree line cover in east San Diego county 14 years ago. A Cougar crept up on us as dusk hit. After it was dark, we could hear it using the sound-cover of wind blowing leaves to creep around; they're smart AF! After firing our shotgun at the direction of it several times, it still wouldn't leave and persisted us! We carefully hiked out of the treeline cover of the creek, and after we got to the clearing, it stopped following us. They're 100% fierce! I checked his tracks the next day and scouted him jumping down from a tree. Must've been an easy, 200+ lbs male. They're fearless, and no bullsh!t!!

What is the point of ridiculing these poor young men for what they did/didn’t do? This is a rare and tragic occurrence folks. 🤦‍♂️

Same thing nearly happened to my older brother, he was armed though, and blew that thing away. Never go alone (even with a friend or family) without being armed. Nature will win. They have in this case. RIP

I had my own cougar encounter 2 years ago while gold panning on a creek on Vancouver island. I was lucky enough that I saw them ( there was 2 together) before they saw me. One was an older one with the black markings on the face, the other was a young one with no black on the face. I was panning on the creek behind a big boulder that partially shielded me from their sight. they came out on a fallen tree that went out over the creek and were looking around up and down the creek. I just froze in place since by bear spray was over 20 meters away in my pack and did not think I could get to it before they could get to me. Luckily there was a branch on the fallen tree they were on that partially blocked their view of my position and I was down wind of them as well. My only thought was to stay still as I know cats react to movement more than anything else. I am also glad I did not have my dog with me that day or things could have turned out very badly. The older one did look my way eventually but could not get a clear view because of the tree branch but did a head-bob trying to get a clearer view of me. They did eventually move on but I stayed frozen in place for another 5 minutes just in case. ALWAYS carry bear spray!!!

90 pounds, holy Jesus... You might think that's small at first but when you have a firm understanding of cat fast muscle twitch fiber strength and speed, the 4 inch teeth and claws are just like knives. Too bad they didn't have pepper spray or a pistol.

Something like this happened to my brother-in-law, but with a bear. My brother-in-law had a gun and shot the bear in self defense. The bear's pelt is now hanging on his wall.

We have wasps in the Uk, they sting a bit, but you get over it! Walking, mountain biking, camping, and especially living etc etc in an area where, bears , wolves and big cats roam is pretty much beyond the wildest dreams of most British and European people! The closest we get to such animals is in a Zoo!

Terrible tragedy for the family, but those boys did their best....one saved the survivor. Just surprised they didn't at least have a hunting knife, let alone a pistol on them. Also, shocked the first group of cops wouldn't kill it on site considering it was over the body.

The surving brother will be devastated, you can't unsee what he has seen. Grief and injuries to deal with. Sending good wishes to him and his family.

I saw a mountain lion on the road to Mammoth Pool. It was every bit 12ft. from head to tail and it's head was as big as a beach ball. I was amazed at how big it's head was. They don't call them lions for nothing.There are enormous ones out there but you'll hardly ever see them....Until it's too late

90lbs? Thats as big as my brothers malamute and he’s a huge dog. I couldn’t imagine fighting an animal of that size with my bare hands especially one with more agility and larger/sharper claws than a dog. That takes courage. Rest easy, sir🕊️🙏

The cat would have probably kept going about his business had they not started yelling and screaming and waving their arms or threw their backpack towards it. Generally they don't act aggressively unless they're antagonized.... very sad all the way around.

i used to walk around any forest/mountain/wilderness that i would come across when i was a kid. Never once even considered how dangerous it was.

As a kid and younger man I never walked or hiked with a handgun, but now I always carry. More for people with ill-intent than wild animals, but it can be helpful in either case.

There was a cougar shot and killed here in Ashland on Saturday less than 250 feet from Siskiyou school. Imagine if it had been during the week and with kids playing? It doesn't even need to be in the woods anymore to have the possibility of an attack, just somewhere close to a forested area. May the older brother rest in peace and may the younger brother make a full recovery in both body and mind.

I got stalked by one at night on my bike in G.P. Alberta. I was on a path using my phone to see. It was pitch black. I saw it briefly and heard it growling. Was difficult to peddle fast on a windy path. Forth scariest moment of my life.

This is insane. No EDC? Not that it could have necessarily saved him, but maybe a chance. That poor family.

You always have to have something to protect yourself, at the very least a serrated blade.

R.I.P these young boys. Very sad for they're parents. I believe all lifes matter. Wild animals being killed in their habitat for being wild animals may bring peace of mind but its wrong. People can torture people to death and they still get to live. Yet a predator animal attacks in their habitat and they're killed. In the wilderness, there will always be that risk. You should be educated about it and always bring non fatal protection. There's plenty.

The Younger brother proved the old adage "I don`t have to be faster than a Mountain Lion, Just faster than you".

I raised a Mountain Lion from a 6-week. cub. Mine got to 100 lbs as he was well-fed. Powerful animals. Big cats have an amazing ability to sense fear. I imagine its because I lived with my cat actually in my home, I've lost the fear of them. I've been around a few known to attack, but have never had a problem. But I've had visitors over that upset my cat the moment they walked in the room. I have no idea what makes big cats stalk some humans but not others. Something is triggered in the cat and they go into "prey stalk" mode with much confidence. I'm no expert by any means. though. Condolences to this family. Very tragic. I still would never go into the wild without a weapon.

I feel horrible for Taylen and his family, but was killing the mountain lion after he already ran away really necessary? I know they said they killed him to protect future hikers but technically us humans are in their territory when in the wilderness.

When I was younger we lived pretty close to the mountains. So it would be my playground I think back of how lucky I am to never have encountered a mountain lion while I was deep in the mountain

Why would you go into the forest unarmed? How do people not comprehend how dangerous it is.

Out of the 32 years I have been hunting I have been tracked by a mountain lion at least twice, and never saw it, only it's tracks over the top of my tracks.
