This a a very detailed step by step installation video for the MVT Digital Direct inner rotor ignition system on my horizontal Minarelli scooter engine. I was installing the DD06 model. It should be very similar to other lightweight racing ignition system installations as well, with lots of details about setting up the timing of the rotor.

Tip: when you get the rotor on the crank you can give it some taps with a rubber hammer, works every time.

Great video. If you want an absolute TDC measurement I reccomend using the piston stop method and a degree wheel. Rotate till you hit the stop, roll it the other way hit the stop and split the difference in half. The dwell at TDC means you can easily have a few degrees of dead spot. All that said in my own video I use this method as well because I am lazy.

What good would that do when the spec is in mm? If it were in degrees from TDC, I get it. You'd want to know true TDC. It will be the same distance in mm from TDC if you're anywhere in that range where the piston dwells for a few degrees. It actually surprised me at first when I got into this and realized the margin for error. Just seems like they'd let you setup a degree wheel and tell you it's x degrees BTDC. Could run a calculator, but apparently they (and as I understand it) most other racing iggy manufacturers just tell you distance specs.

You could I guess in theory do the piston stop method, fix the crank, exchange the piston stop for a dial gauge, zero it and then set your mm.. I'm already tired writing that. Because the dwell still relates to crank degrees. So your tdc is not the "true" tdc. But for all intent it's probably close enough.

@@pitobread I was actually making another video in the garage just hours ago about finding true TDC with a dial indicator and checking that against a piston stop and just zeroing a dial indicator. What I can tell you from that, is that it's still the same distance from TDC with it zeroed with the indicator or using true TDC, because one is a measurement of distance from the top of the piston's travel and the other is the amount of degrees of crankshaft rotation from true TDC.

@@49ccscoot Like i said it's barely worth the effort, but it can be in some cases! It's going to depend on your rod stroke ratio. short stroke long rod motors could add up! Here is a neat calculator that can help with numbers to show exactly what I am describing. www.torqsoft.net/piston-position.html If you put in 44mm stroke, 80 mm rod, .35 angle and set it on piston position. Calculate it then change your rod length to 105. One has your piston juuuuust starting to move and the other one hasn't started yet. You can also use this to tell you exactly how much dwell you have at TDC. Remember it will be x2 whatever the angle is. This is what I mean by true TDC.. in the end it doesn't really matter, if you math it out and round it relates to about a degree of error. Not enough to worry about. Just figured I would mention it before someone tells you your piston is in backwards. ;)

Lookin at aliexpress,and the smaller idle jets I promote are for Mikuni carb. "often used for arctic Cat,Polaris,Ski-doo twins and Yamaha Viper 2 strokes".Its for snow mobiles stationed on south-pole.So the jets are for asian jungle and deserts.That is why you have 123 mm nozzles.( ;

The stator is slotted to make final adjustments if needed. No need to remove or loosen flywheel again.

What advance should I use for my barikit 80cc with stock stroke 39,1 mm. And I already put it on but there is something weird going on when I kick it the kick wants to fly up again and it’s kinda hard started

If it's a DD06 with the included CDI, then it should be 0.40mm BTDC for the initial setting. Double check that. If it's not the DD06, check the specs for whatever model number you have. If you use an E-PROM CDI with the Digital Direct then they use different specs too. If it kind of kicks back at you, it's probably got a lot of advance... but that seems to be normal with mine.

This model has charging coils and MVT does provide instructions with the kit. They also have some on their website.

They have models for large and small Minarelli tapers, so it should be OK that way. The MVT shouldn't damage the crank, but if you try to use a stock crank for high revs it may not go well or at least not for very long.

Full circle or not has no bearing on the ignition timing setting. Set it based on stroke.

Thanks for the information, who would you recommend for my build? I would like to buy a mini stroker and maybe a set of gears. I currently have a polini cast bore 70cc, Keli pulley and ramp ready to go in. I would also like to put in and over range rear pulley and probably a longer belt. I'm guessing you're in HI from the greeting. I don't really know the scene out there, but I'm certain there are some good shops and capable tuners around. If you wanted to register on the forum, you could ask and maybe one of the HI locals could point you in a better direction than I could. We have at least a few very active members out there.

@@cuongvo2205 I'm sure it's possible. What I've seen from a forum member that tried to use a stock flywheel on a Big Evo was that he kept breaking flywheels. It would make the rivets come out of it. I've had a failure where I think a bearing went first and it bent the crank and broke the ramp plate on the variator. At high RPM, a lot is possible. Regardless, high rev setups are much better with inner rotor ignitions. Aside from the difference in mass, they generally have a much better timing curve than standard CDIs or a lot of aftermarket CDIs.

Do you know the separation between the rotor and stator of the mvt dd ? and bought a new one and the cone is not correct it does not go in at all and is very separated, 7.60mm from the stator to the rotor I'm sorry for my English, I'm Spanish, I use the google translator

Mine is about that far apart on the Minarelli. When I installed one custom on the RC-One I made it sit closer. Both run just fine.

Not really. I know they're different platforms, but I don't really know much about the Morini engines. Haven't worked on TGB or Hyosung that they're common in.

If you know what type of engine or bike it’s for you can look that up. It may have a model number on the stator or rotor. Maybe even the model of the CDI could help narrow it down, but they use the same CDI with multiple models.

Hi dude I hope you read this and get back to me 👍🏻 I really need to know if the taper on the Yamaha crankshaft is the same as the Chinese crankshaft?? I need to know this as I own a CPI mvt ignition but my new cylinder requires a 85mm rod which I can only find for the Yamaha. I hope and pray that the taper is the same or I may have to buy another mvt ignition 😒

The taper on the typical Yamaha crank is the same as some clone cranks. The clones have large and small taper versions. Large taper is very common on the CPI 1E40QMB. It's supposed to be pre 2003-2004 they would be small taper and post would be large. If you have the 12mm crank pin and larger splined section on the CVT side, then it's pretty safe to assume you have large taper.

@@tamer27antepli I believe it is MVT DD23 for the larger cranks. If you go on ScooterTuning and look under CPI 50 and then ignition you should see some ignitions for larger cranks.

@@tamer27antepli It's not as simple as drilling a hole. You would need someone to bore it to the proper taper for your crank. Unless you can do it or have a friend with a lathe that owes you a favor, it would at least make sense to see if you can get a price on the rotor for the 16mm crank and perhaps make sure they can interchange (no difference in the stator).

On my scooter you have to buy the whole airbox if you want a replacement paper air filter element is that a normal practice for most scooters ? It's a Hyosung. Makes me feel like it's a toy. It's $38 for the air box delivered.

As giannfa000 said, there should be an option without replacing the whole box. UNI also makes foam that can be cut as needed. I think they may even offer dual layer more like some scooters have stock.

Should be 0.4mm for standard stroke. I don't see anything specifically for the DD21, but other strokes of 39-40mm are 0.40mm.

The process is the same, but specs could vary. I would suggest checking the instructions or contacting MVT to be sure about the timing spec for your engine.

I spent a few minutes looking around, because I've never used the Piaggio version. I didn't see anything specific to the DD09 that is for Piaggio. Some pics show the same CDI (RJ34-6) that I have. That makes me think you may be OK with the same specs as the DD06 for Minarelli. I don't know that for sure though. You could try contacting MVT or a dealer that sells them if you don't have the original instructions to check.

@@crbcairo.1633 Contact MVT or see if ScooterTuning can help maybe. Otherwise, with measurements to guide you, you can find most stuff at McMaster-Carr. The M5 bolts and washers are easy enough. The M6x1.0 bolts (not sure on length, but they're so easy to cut down if they're a little large) should be no problem. Honestly, a local hardware store may be all you need.

Hi, i swap ignition to Mvt and engine starts on reverse! What the fxx? Any one with ideas? I was told I have to much Adv timing, so I use half to what cdi demand and still wean I kick start, engine starts on reverse ...

This seems to be pretty common with the E-Prom from MVT. At least for Minarelli, they want 2.9mm BTDC, as opposed to their standard CDI that's around 0.35-0.45mm BTDC usually. If you've backed the timing off to half of what it was, I would first suggest double checking everything to be sure you haven't got anything off in the process. Even at 2.9mm with the E-Prom, most report intermittent reverse starting. For example, a friend said about once every 5 starts it may start backwards. Seems to be right on the edge if it's setup to spec.

@@Kyle_gallegher You may be able to change base timing to get the right timing in the powerband. Not really sure what ignition the ATVs have, but 2T scoots are a basic curve mostly. This is a very aggressive curve with lots of advance till 7,000RPM and then tapering off. It makes it snappy or abrupt getting on the pipe, which won't happen so much with small change curves. It's also very small and light so it makes the response great for that reason as well.

I tested also with different setting, like 0.35mm, 0.25mm, and ende up to set it 0.50mm for the best result 1 last question: did you manage to connect the cables to charge your battery?

I found that MVT recommends 0.35mm BTDC, while my cylinder manufacturer recommends 4-4.5mm BTDC.

I don't know anything about the 103, but just from pics I can see that it's a different rotor, looks like maybe a different stator and the CDI has a different number. Probably a different mounting plate. So it's meant to fit that engine's flywheel taper and mounting and possibly has different specs.

Hy i'm not in agree, for your 86cc with 44mm crankshaft it's needed by Top performance schedule 20° BTDC. With 0,35mm of BTDC you have 1,43°. You can calculate with this formula X°= (180xYm)/ms . Where "Ym" will be the BTDC and "ms" will be motor stroke. For example, with 44 motor stroke, you'll need X°=(180x4.88)/44 X°=(578.4)/44 X°=19.96°. BTDC 1,43° it's not too much anticipate, and the motor can't ignite the gas properly.

TBH, the TPR spec of 20 degrees has never made total sense to me. They don't specify where. Locked out at 20 degrees isn't going to do the best. 20 degrees of base timing could mean all sorts of things with different CDIs. With the MVT as setup here, it has over 40 degrees of timing at low RPM and reaches 20 degrees around 11,000RPM. @@49ccscoot I investigate, and i think on the MVT the line is not the pick up, but the charge to produce electricity, i translate the recommend on the manual of MVT and it'is: "before top dead center if the cylinder is 50cc, if the cylinder is greater than 50cc it must be set at 0.35mm before the top dead center, likewise the lighting must not exceed 55w" , i think to never go up 55w they say for 50cc motor keep it at 0mm, for upper motor keep it at 0,35mm, after the timing of the CDI will do the correct timing of 16° or 20° for the TPR 86cc engine. So my excuse for the precedent message ;)

Yes. It needs to stay at high RPM to charge though. Doesn't do much at idle or low RPM.

After setting piston to the stroke timing, do i have to reset the timing marks again after advancing or retard the stator?

When the piston is placed at the desired distance from TDC, the marks should be made to align so you know it's set right. Recheck to be sure nothing moved after the rotor is installed. After that, you can move the slotted stator to change timing as you desire. If you want to put it back to the standard setting, then align the marks again by rotating the stator to it's original position. The marks won't align at the standard setting after you rotate the stator.

This uses no woodruff key. The rotor isn't machined for it. That's why you have to go through the timing procedure.

DD06 says it's for Yamaha/MBK models before 2003 and the DD19 says it's for those after 2003.

I've always been a fan of degree wheels and timing lights, but after dealing with the racing ignition I will say that this is a very fast way to set up timing. Timing lights on this particular ignition (and many other racing ignitions to my understanding) can be very it or miss.

I really can’t advise on this since I never touched a gtx and they are not really minarelli engines. Chinese knock offs are so mix match of parts that I don’t know which part would fit and which won’t. I know it’s not the answer you want to hear but honestly in my opinion it’s not worth the time. For me to get into detail of the 101 variables on jog/minarelli engines will be too confusing and since it’s not something I work on I wouldn’t know where to start. My suggestion to all those that message me Chinese clone motors is to leave it stock of it runs. Any modification and you are opening a can of worms money pit. You are more then welcome to try but I can’t really be of help. Sorry Mahalo for the acknowledgement of me knowing minarellis but I have no clue when it comes to the qmb line of motors “Okay bro, I messaged the local expert on minarelli engines and the above was his answer. “

I don't see where they're al that different from the Yamaha Minarelli horizontals, like the Zuma. Yes, there are multiple differences, but most of the engine and CVT stuff generally fits. The Chinese engines do have different sizes of wrist pins, flywheel tapers, and variator splines. When you get to the gearbox, that's different than many Yamahas and there are multiple versions.
